As promised here is the plastic Karnival

"Karnival Death Heads - Armour Edition went into manufacture today. Made of 100% plastic they are NAILS. This deck is tougher than Chuck Norris, Sly Stallone and Randy Couture encased in a concrete slab which has then been forged into a skull crushing hammer. They LAUGH at your sweaty hands. They JEER at that puddle of beer. They smash the face of girlie Bikes. Coming soon beetches."

I'm curious enough to pick up a deck.  Never had plastic cards.  I don't appreciate being called a beeatch but I'll let it slide.  Everybody gets one.

Forget that mess...I have a deck of Bicycle Prestige...that is about as far into the plastic deck world as I care to get.

Family guy reference?

Anyway, Bicycle Prestige decks are some of the best plastic decks out there, same with KEM decks, and they are all cheaper and can actually be used for Poker (no clue why anyone would make a pure one-way design on a deck...ever).

On top of that, plastic cards are horrible for magic & flourishing. Some of them smell absolutely horrifying too like my Modiano deck.

I'll pass on these too. Maybe my local magic shop will get them and I'll pick one up to do a review. But I really don't like that design.

Without the skulls, the design could be a very nice one! It'd need some work but if they didn't use those skulls, more people may be interested in it. BBM should try an elegant design... not skulls and stuff like that

Skulls are just kinda BBM's thing.  It'd be weird for them to make a deck without skulls now.  I'll be getting a deck of these just to see.  One deck only.

I'm a poker player so I've got quite a few plastic decks of cards for that sole reason, but I won't be picking these ones up. They don't look that good and the one way back isn't that good.
Mystery is the basic appeal of magic. Once the secrets are known, the magician becomes a mere manipulator, an actor in a suspense drama which has little impact because the audience knows the ending in advance.

i acctually think that is a kind of nice design compared to the other more recent releases from BBM. The only decks i like from them are the renegades and Dead Eyes and Assassins are okay.
People say nothing's impossible, but I do nothing everyday.

Today I found something that reminded me of you. But don't worry I flushed and everything went back to normal.

Asking BBM to take skulls off of a deck design is like asking USPC to stop making Bicycle Rider Backs.  It's their thing, it's what they're known for, like their signature or their trademark.  I'll grant that the recent trend has been for more classic and elegant decks, but decks like the Death Heads will always have a market, especially when it comes to working street magicians.  They grab the eye, they force one to look, almost like passing a car accident - you can't turn away.

Personally, I'm looking forward to what appears to be the first genuine custom plastic deck specifically intended for magicians as opposed to something multi-purposed like the various Bicycle models.

And I like the skulls.

I love my Bicycle Prestige deck! Definitely the best plastic deck out there. That deck looks terrible though, 1 way back and its just a terrible lazy design in my opinion.

One-way?  I have Prestige decks and never noticed.  Where, exactly?

meh guess i won't be getting it then. not so much into bbm's products anyway, AND it's not bicycle branded.

No, they aren't Bicycles - they're actually better.  Am I the only one who noticed on the deck box that they're made by Fournier in Spain?  Making anything with Fournier and shipping it here is more expensive - look at Lee Asher's Fournier 605 decks; they cost about $11 or $12 a pack.  Fournier is not only one of the highest quality card makers in the world, they're also a subsidiary of USPC!  These guys aren't slouches when it comes to making high-grade cards - I ordered two decks and I'm looking forward to seeing them.

I know the price is definately out of whack, but why? Does it cost more to make plastic it decks, does it cost $20 to?

No, it doesn't cost $20.  But if you want them made well, and they have to be imported from nearly halfway around the world and over an ocean, then yes, they're going to cost more when they get here in the States.  Probably as much or more when they reach Asia.

Does anyone remember how expensive Kem cards were before the USPC takeover?  Most people using Kem cards from then and from now prefer the older ones - a higher-quality plastic and process was used to make them, and they were also available in a much wider variety.  The new ones are cheaper because they're made cheaper - not to say poorly, just cheaper, and in the opinion of many not as good as before.  I've seen Royal plastic decks in 99-cent stores - and they play like a deck from a 99-cent store.  Good decks of any kind cost more than cheap, chintzy ones, paper or plastic.  It's why Infinity and Black Crown decks and the like are never seen anywhere near a 99-cent store, nor in a supermarket, or a stationery, or a pharmacy, etc.

Quality costs more, and that's what BBM appears to have been shooting for with their deck - quality, durability and a "street magic"-friendly design akin to the rest of their product line.  When I get mine, I'll give 'em a once-over and let you know how they perform.  I have high hopes for this deck, and have had ever since I heard the original announcement.  It would be nice to be able to perform somewhere like a bar or a restaurant without worrying about my beautiful, expensive, high-grade playing cards getting utterly ruined.  I've lost a Gargoyles and a Dose deck in a single night at one less-than-hygenic bar that was running a barbecue night...

If this deck is a hit, I could easily picture other name-brand magic card shops coming up with designs of their own in tough-as-nails plastic.  It would only make sense.

I think he was referring to this deck when he mentioned the one way backs; the tips of the bones of the skull and cross bones pattern are slightly different on each side. The two on the right side are the same, and the two on the left side are different from the ones on the right side, but the same as each other. Making it a one way back design. Although, in my opinion, it's quite a subtle difference, and I quite like it.

I've got sort of mixed feelings about this deck. The design isn't that bad, but I'm just so tired of skulls and that sort of theme, that I'm put off it a bit. And the price is obviously a big factor. Well, I'll see how things go.

Can you think of another quality plastic deck on the market that is designed for magicians?  I can't.  Though I'm sure a lot of you could think of designs you WISH were available in well-made plastic.

  • Pick a card, any card...no, not THAT card!

The Good: they're good quality plastic, the back is NOT a one-way design as previously thought (or if it is, it's a more subtle one that I have yet to find) because they fixed the skulls thing before it went to print so now the back appears symmetrical.  They feel good in my hands.

The BAD: BOTH decks I ordered were DEFECTIVE, and with the same defect.  A small number of cards in both decks (the same cards, BTW) had what appears to be printing errors - ink splattered into the white border, rendering those cards permanently marked.  When I saw one was bad, I was not happy.  When I checked the other, I was even less happy than before.

The clincher: I sent an email to BBM and got this message from owen@bigblindmedia.com:

hi there,

BBM is closed until Mon Dec 19. Owen is away playing heavy metal with his old band (earthtone9). Don't begrudge him this last fling of teenage silliness. If you have ordered any product it will be posted out by the BBM elves and will land with you imminently.

Now go have a mince pie.

What the hell?  Is Owen the entire company, with no employees?  And they (or more accurately, HE) just closes up shop while he's away playing metal at a pub somewhere?  Who knew that Big Blind Media is actually just one Ballsy Brit Musician?  Who's also a Bollocks Bruising Monger of cards?  Sitting on his Big Butt Mass somewhere?   Acting all Brave But Mental?
 ::)

Kinda reminds me of the multiple times I'd call some huge major big-name company or government organization only to find they're letting the phone ring off the hook and not answering it.  "I guess the Emergency Services Unit isn't home, they're not picking up..."  "Cablevision must have gone on vacation or something and forgot to turn on the answering machine..."  "No one's answering at work - I guess that means they've closed for the night?"  (I work in a 24/7 operation, always open, no matter what, except perhaps for an evacuation, which thus far has never happened in the nearly forty years they're in business.  So yeah, finding no one "home" is a little disconcerting!)

I want my mince pie! :-P

Sorry to ressurect an old thread, but thought it made more sense than to start a new one. I recently got a Death Heads deck so I'll share my own opinion.

I've never used plastic cards before, so I can't compare with others. For me, these handle well. They are a nice thickness - thin, but you don't need to worry about bending them out of shape or anything. Quite slippery, but that may just be inexperience and the newness of the cards.

One of the main things I like about these cards is that I don't worry about being clumsy with them which is a bonus for me as a relatively novice card user. Whether the plastic cards make me pick up bad habits I don't know, but these are definitely good to practice with.

They don't really behave differently to any other cards I've used when fanning, dribbling, cutting etc. Although I don't do anything too fancy, so maybe when the flourishes are stepped up a gear that will change.

My main complaint is that they are noisy! The matte finish makes a scuffing sound when the cards rub each other, making moves like a classic pass terribly noisy!

I also dislike jumbo index, but that's personal preference and I guess card players like this and enjoy the robustness of the plastic.

EDIT - I also had a look for any signs of ink splatters on the borders but couldn't find any on my deck. Unless I didn't look hard enough!

That's great! Do they really handle as well as plastic coated cards? Because normally plastic cards don't handle well at all!

Those pics that CBJ posted make this deck look really good... they almost made me want to pick a deck or two up! Im still going to pass on them for now, but if I get the chance, I'll probably buy a deck or two.

They are good.  That metalhead finally got back and answered my email, sent me two new decks, no questions asked.  They have the best handling of any plastic deck I've used to date, a close second being the standard edition Ace plastic cards from Cartamundi (the special editions feel fake-plasticky, while the standard ones with jumbo faces are really nicely made with a similar matte finish to the Death Heads).

I wouldn't use them for card throwing, but you can take them out to a table-hopping gig at a bar or a restaurant without fear of spilled drinks, spaghetti sauce or spit-up from that rugrat with the nasty-smelling burps...  :))
