A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Re: Vintage - Antique Meanings

To paraphrase Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart, "I know an antique deck when I see it."

Thanks for the responses fellas!

When I look through the 52+J auction sheets I'm constantly thinking, "I wish I knew more, I wish I knew more!".  I own a Hochman, but I haven't had time to memorize it yet.  So I'm afraid that I may skip bidding on a great deck because I don't appreciate how special it is.  MyBadJoker's question, if I understand it, is can he do some write ups on some of the better decks in the P&P auction.  When I came to the thread, it looked like Tom and Don were not wild about the idea.  Which is understandable because you probably already know a lot about the decks that P&P is selling (and have an obligation to keep the board clean).  So I spoke up to encourage MyBadJoker to follow through.

I don't have any objection to "advertising posts", but I can understand why some might.  From my perspective MyBadJoker will not only educate me on some decks, but also give me a chance to but them.  In that same line of thought, Tom of Judy might like to do some quick posts on some of the 52+J items.

As for the business about when/where a this type thing should be posted, I don't have a dog in that fight.  My personal (mild) preference is to keep it in the Cellar so I only have to stay on top of one forum.  From the standpoint of the seller, it does seem to make some sense to do it where it would be seen by the most people...

Either way, I'm so glad we found this forum.  A couple years ago I was begging Judy for this very thing.

Yeah, those Delands are cool, but there is almost too much going on with them.  I had a similar deck in the 90's that my friends and i played with. Was it call Svengali? Haven't thought abought that in years.

Svengali decks are a different animal!  They're quite simple, in fact - every other card is the same suit & value and is cut slightly shorter than the rest of the deck.  You can use such a deck for a number of effects, not the least of which being a card force (making the spectator pick the card of your choice but making it seem like a random selection).

You may have had one of the many variants of the DeLand deck.

Yes, of course you are right.  My Svengali deck featured the 2 of Hearts.  Somehow we also had a 90's era DeLand.

A piece of USPCC Advertising History alongside (to show scale) an exceeding rare deck of Bicycle Racerbacks c.1940-1955… Would anyone like to venture a guess as to why this vintage run of the mill looking deck of Racerbacks is so exceedingly rare?

That's a cool advertisement, but it's to big for my display rack!

Both of my DeLands are S.S. Adams.  They both show a 1913 T.L. DeLand copyright but must've been produced after 1918.

This is probably half of my (entire!) collection.  I realize you can't see much in these photos, but I plan to feature some of my better decks with individual posts in the future.  If you see any decks you want more info on, let me know.

I may be in the minority here, but I WANT to know what you guys are selling.  To protect the board from getting cluttered up, all member auctions could be kept to one thread.  Below you will see an example of how another forum handles this issue.

I propose that as soon as the club auction ends, Tom start a Member Auction Thread in the Cellar.  This will allow those of us who buy/sell on EBay (or other auctions) to communicate with each other and keep the board clean.

If you want to try to collect all back varieties, I have a couple spare decks.  (Roses and Tulips). They are gently used, most of the gold still on the edges, boxes in great condition, etc.  i may throw them up on eBay next week...

Confirmed!  I just checked a deck of Aviators in a gas station.  Had a 10 cent stamp similar to the one pictured in OP...

I live in Alabama but I haven't bought a new deck of cards here in ages.  Around the house we use Copag and DaVinci.

I will check at lunch and report back!

What a great thread.  So glad 52+J found this place.
