Playing Card Plethora / Re: New Virts offerings
« on: December 12, 2013, 02:46:01 PM »
Hopefully it's a bit more than just a Virtuoso deck V2 (ie minor changes to the original). I love the original, but I'm done with buying every edition of every deck.

"Oh, and one last thing. If you think we simply changed the red color of the first deck to blue, you're wrong. ;)"

I suppose we'll see.The Virts are pretty good at the hype train business though.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Framing uncut sheets
« on: August 28, 2013, 02:41:38 AM »
If you truly love the uncut sheets you are framing and consider them art, then invest in a decent frame from a framer...  A nice mat and frame choice can really enhance the piece you are framing... It costs a couple of dollars more but it's worth it... Just make sure you explain to the framer that you want the piece untouched and that it's an investment, so you don't want any tape or glue touching the print...

I would definitely echo this sentiment, especially if you're framing rare pieces. A bad frame job can easily ruin your uncuts. If you got a cheap frame from a large retailer, I'd guess that the matte and backing aren't archival quality and can eventually cause damage to your uncuts. I wouldn't spring for the high end museum stuff because the costs on that add up pretty quickly (and the frame job might end up costing more than the uncuts themselves), but a decent matte and backing are essentials, in my opinion. I'd consider the frame job an investment-if you get a good one, you'll never have to worry about replacing it or it causing damage to your goods.

Looks cool as an uncut sheet, not a fan of entirely colored backs since they tend to chip with use.

I'm going to be that person-

On your "Add Ons" image, you spelled "amount" wrong in the sentence "All pledge ammounts include shipping."

in case you wanted to fix it.

As for the use of the Bicycle logo, I too have no preference either way. It could be a concern that when performing with these cards, having the Bicycle logo would be beneficial in getting it across that the deck is in no way rigged to a suspicious audience. On the other hand, I can see that having the Bicycle logo could make a collection, when displayed as a whole, appear more cohesive. However, I too own many decks without the Bicycle logo that all look fine. For this deck, since the design (somewhat) repeats itself on the borders, I think the use of the Bicycle logo is fine. If using the Bicycle logo would sacrifice something absolutely gorgeous, I may have had some concerns.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: [Sort of KS] Boss Deck of Playing Cards

This shindig ends on Friday and I was wondering if it was an oversight, like Don said, about the shipping cost not being included for the playing cards because everything else did. Then I realized that this was catering to UK people (where it appears everything else is being made, hence shipping costs everywhere) but the decks would be printed in the US because it's USPCC and therefore, there was no need for a US shipping charge.

So, yea. No additional shipping costs and picking up 3 for $11 each ain't bad.

And with that redesign, I am placated and will be pledging. I'm rarely a fan of tossing all the suits on there (still not for this one), but it's definitely better than what he had before. Loving the thinner borders now too.

As for pricing, with the success of the Pedale and Founders decks, and now this deck, I'm wondering if this is the new price point for KS decks, it allows for a larger margin of "Shenanigans" error. For a deck with this much work into it and this level of attention to detail, I don't feel so bad pledging this much. My worry lies in deck that are tossed together and think they can carry a $15 price tag.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Bicycle Grid 2.0 from 4PM Designs (KS)
« on: March 06, 2013, 01:17:18 PM »
I like the idea of the hidden designs, but am not sure of their practicality. I know they sell handheld UV lights, but pulling that out during a performance seems forced (especially to take advantage of the reveal). The other scenario I could see would be at a setting that uses UV light such as a club, but then my Ace of Hearts would always have the 8 of Hearts reveal and I'd have to make sure to keep that ace hidden throughout any of my performances. The hidden designs also make it look really busy.

Figuratively stumbled upon this; it's not a kickstarter in its own right:

It's a reward tier from this kickstarter:

With an early bird option for just the playing cards limited to 50. It'll only get made if the book/DVD itself gets funded.

I'm really digging the cards they've shown so far, huge fan of the topic and of the style they chose to do it in. Only shame is that the book's gotta hit its £30,000 goal for these to be produced. It's roughly $11 for the early bird and $15 after. They didn't mention anything about shipping.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Club 808 Update
« on: March 01, 2013, 01:19:46 PM »
Here's the entire email for the curious:

Our March articles, interview, contest, merchandise, and more are live on Club 808. In this month's selection of exclusive content, you'll find:

An all-new monthly feature called "What's On Deck" that lets Club 808 members in on top secret Bicycle® Brand News
An interview with the founding members of Club Tattoo, including Chester Bennington (lead singer of Linkin Park), and Sean and Thora Dowdell
The newest cocktail recipe from master mixologist Molly Wellman
A new contest with a prize signed by Club Tattoo founders Chester Bennington, Sean Dowdell, and Thora Dowdell—as well as the members of Linkin Park
New articles to read and share
Brand-new merchandise in the Club 808 shop (including uncut sheets of the Griffin Deck)

The only new merchandise would be the uncut sheets, which are limited to 4 per and absurdly cheap compared to other uncuts I've seen.

The Conversation Parlor / Playing Card Collection Displays (?)
« on: February 28, 2013, 04:31:53 PM »
So I've been rooting around the forums wondering how you folk display your collections and it seems like people tend to just stack them or use those acrylic display cases. I'd appreciate your opinion on the following.

-Do you keep a rotating display, a fixed display, or no display at all?
-What do y'all do about playing cards that don't come in standard cases or come in boxes that you'd like displayed
-Do you keep them in the cellophane or do you open them?
-Do you display the back in any way (through a mirror or just displaying the back facing forward)?
-Do you mix your playing cards with other paraphernalia such as dice?
-Do you just hang them on a wall or do you have a case for them?

Post pictures? I'd love to see everyone's collections.

I stopped by my magic shop today and they had some Vanda decks in, so I guess those have already been printed but I'm not sure if they've shipped to backers yet.

From Taiwan though. I couldn't find it the regular way. I had to find completed auctions and then the owner had relisted them.

Introduce Yourself / Hm. So.
« on: February 01, 2013, 02:11:04 AM »
I think I did something like this once. Then I returned to lurking forever.

So I'm Stephanie and I operate from southern California. I started as a cardist when I was in high school and evolved to parlor tricks along the way. I stopped for a while for various reasons and then when I took it up again in college, I proceeded to sprain both my thumbs consecutively (huehuehue). Magic's always been in the back of my mind ever since I started though, so I decided to try for it again now that my academic workload seems like it's not trying to kill me. I'm trying to be a magician with some cardistry skills and I have a fondness for collecting playing cards and other paraphernalia of the vices.

I found this place while I was hunting for information on some decks and found that not only do card collectors have their own little hole, this place has an entire category dedicated to designing decks which I am totally going to stalk. I also wanted to see the pictures in the threads. They're very nice pictures.

Did I cover everything?
