ah yes. I was not a member of the forum at this point. Thanks for sharing.

wait, there was a playing card film festival? Was it cardistry related or an actual event that playing movies that had playing cards in them?

Anyway, this is kinda cool but unless it is an actual event at a playing card/magic convention or has enough funding and support to be a stand a lone event, it just seems like its a glorified online poll/survey. It is not any secret that Jackson will win Favorite designer or Jason will win Best Bicycle collector or Albino Dragon will win Best Licensing etc...If you look at project numbers and general posts on the forums/facebook about this or that topic, you can pretty much figure out who should win the award.

From the looks of it I feel like USPCC said "How close can we get it to the Fed 52 design?"

I wonder if the copyright/trademark lawyers are going to bite on this considering these monsters are pretty close rip offs of the original Universal monsters. Like direct copies of the Bela Lugosi, Lon Chaney and Boris Karloff characters that Universal owns.

When I created my monster deck I specifically went with generic monsters to avoid the nonsense that happened with The Army Men Deck. Plus I also requested info from Universal on this matter and I was told that the characters from the movies are still protected and owned  by Universal. Going through the process to use the actual monsters in the Universal franchise was going to be a long and expensive process.

Hopefully they have covered their butts.

Scratching my head......I thought Jackson Robinson had exclusive rights to Sherlock on playing cards....SOOOOO confused..

Design is nice. This whole thing reminds me of that guy Don had a little scuffle with a few weeks back. He named his deck Sophia Rae after his daughter too.

Totally different case - we all commented about how that deck bore too many resemblances to something that Dan and Dave might put out, and he commented about how all the design elements he put in the deck had meaning for him and his daughter, but refused to tell anyone else what that was.  That deck has about 51.5 hours left on the project and is about 75% shy of the goal...  But at least they know what it means, right?  :))

Anyway, I digress.  This is a nice-looking variant on the KEM Arrows.  The question on everyone's minds I'm sure is: paper or plastic?

I agree they are completely different. Just reminded me of that situation simply bc of how both decks were named.

There aren't enough custom plastic decks. Would be nice to see something like that.

Yeah this is quite weird.

I do not know about anyone else but I was never exactly a fan of seals anyway. I suppose they look nice if I am not opening them but if I open a deck, the broken seal is just messy.

There's been a couple of different people putting out a lot of decks in a short period of time, I have to wonder how much longer this can continue.

I'm a deck designer, I design decks of playing cards if I didn't continually do it I would be any good. A persons mastering of anything is directly proportional to how much they practice.

I could keep it up until the day I die. If you saw a truck driver pass would you say "Hey what's up with all these truck drivers driving trucks all the time,"

Don mentioned it. I do not know if this is what Victor was referring to as well and he can confirm but some might not be able to get everything you put out if you are always releasing stuff very closely together. For example, a new project doesn't do so well because your biggest buyers just dropped a lot on the last project. Not sure that has happened with your projects yet as they all dominate in dollars raised. Your projects probably take away from other projects more than they take away from your own.

Back to he actual topic though. This is the first look of V2 and if I am correct, a lot of Jackson's designs end up changing from the first teaser to the actual product in hand. It seems like it would be more playable than something more elaborate. And I like that.

I think its possible to make playable decks that are very high quality where artistic integrity is kept in tact. So far Jackson has put out very high quality decks but are somewhat unplayable because people don't want to break the plastic. It would behoove any deck designer to make decks that are playable. I think the Tally Ho's and this are a step in that direction.

Yeah I pledged for this bc I never actually had a mpc deck before. The tuck case is actually very nice. Embossing and metallic inks. Definitely impressed there. The cards are not firm and they actually stay slightly bent after shuffling them. Kind of a bummer.

Here is what we know....

The deck costs $17.
The deck will be printed by MPC.
The tuck will be the plain white tuck box and not custom designed.
The deck is clearly infringing on a copyright.
And the most messed up thing is that The Car Wash gets a card before Baby Holly? Wtf.

Well.... seems like the forum got the best of him. I do not know many people who drop the F bomb when their project gets criticized. Might be the first for the forum if I am not mistaken.

What is the difference between these and the Whispering imps V2 with the minimalist back? Looks like the same amount of effort was put into both but the opinions are night and day.

I'll give it to Mark Stutzman (I assume he designs everything for Whispering Imps?) for the Imps logo but these very different opinions of two decks that use basically the same style is mind boggling to me.

Really like the new concept. Can't wait to see it develop.

Yeah I agree. The only other card that is posted so far is the AoS.

I posted this in another thread but I thought it should have its own thread as I have not seen one show up yet. These were posted on Instagram by user @valenzuelaadrian http://instagram.com/valenzuelaadrian

Kinda pays homage to the buck twins (buck logo), rounders (back) and ellusionist (Republic no.2)

This design style is actually quite nice depending on the logo/symbol used. However, I am seeing more people use this style. I suppose it is a proven success as we have seen Ace Fulton do it, Madison/E do it, Whispering Imps has something coming soon like this and now this. There are probably more modern decks that do this but this is what came to mind as I saw this.

Also, I do not know the name of this one but it is coming soon on Kickstarter. Paying homage to the Buck twins it seems.

The court cards only have pips on one side but the number cards have them on both. Seems odd.

I also agree with the back design being out of place.

Also are the courts custom art or did they take those images from somewhere?

The majority of the high end brands or boutique brands won't do this. Davidoff seconds, tatatuaje seconds and Ashton seconds are completely unheard of.

Thompson, which is a smaller competitor of the company I work for, strikes large deals to buy this stuff and its usually on their proprietary products or on mass produced stuff. Your average tobacco shop won't be able to purchase seconds. I think only a handful of distributors can carry banded seconds.

Also they are sold with the brand listed but you when you get them they will probably have no cigar band on them or it will have a generic brand band around the cigar.

Anyway its completely off topic at this point. Sorry guys.

Don is right.
We have much more sophisticated ways of belittling the opinions, of people we disagree with, here.

Yeah I think my reputation points when down like 4 points since I stated my opinion. That is much more civil than calling me a moron. But I don't think have a contrary opinion makes me a bad poster.

Just so everyone is aware, my opinion comes from working years in the cigar industry where if a cigar maker puts out a flawed batch they will always reroll a brand new batch and won't even ship the flawed cigars. They scrap them or sell them without a band. Cigars are clearly different than cards and there is a reason this is always done in the cigar industry, taste being a huge factor. Its just what I am used to and I tend to hold a lot of companies to this standard.

I'll back down. Since I didn't pledge and most people seem not to care about the flaw and how it was handled, I will just stop beating a dead horse. Clearly it was a bummer of a situation but it seems people are getting what they want so all is good.

You are right though. Refunds on Kickstarter usually don't happen.

23
I believe he has given the customers a choice of what they want to do

1. Keep the V1 version
2. Get a refund for the V1 version
3. Get a refund for V1, and back the new V2
4. Keep the V1, and back the nee V2
5. If you didn't back the V1- now's your chance to get the V2

If you just get the V2. You can still use the 2 extra cards for gaffs, or something. If your a gambler you can...........use them.  ;)

There is an argument that maybe he should have reprinted, since he made a mistake, but I think most people are ok with this solution.

Since he made a mistake is the key phrase. If he is cool with most people being ok with the solution than fine but given how much he talks about quality, I would think he would want everyone to be happy.

Just my two cents. I was already called a moron for expressing this argument on Facebook lol. Apparently this v1 is going to be the most valuable deck on the market. Can't wait to snatch it up for $10 when Jackson puts them on sale.

24
He has the v1 error decks on his site listed for $10 (avail. late April). I do not know how much the v1's will go for on ebay when they can just get them off Jackson for $10.

This whole thing kind of baffles me. I realize he offered refunds (at that point no deck will be shipped) but it still comes at the cost of the backer because they aren't going to get what they thought they were getting when they originally pledged. They have to pledge for this new campaign if they want a fully functional deck of cards. And the deck they pledge for in this new campaign is an updated box so its different from the original campaign. I get the response will be if they do not want the error v1, they can ask for a refund and then pledge for this new v2 campaign. Easy enough. But what a hassle for a product that isn't even the original design. Not to mention, if you use the extra cards to fix the original, then you have a v2 Moriarty deck with only 54 cards without a v2 sherlock deck counterpart. So a complete set of the Sherlock series has an extra Moriarty.

This also coming from a company who has been all about quality and ridding the market of crap. I do not understand why he would want this product on the market with errors. Sure it looks great but it has functional errors. Paul from Encarded reprinted his last project at zero cost to the backer (except for time) when DECO was not at the quality that he wanted it. Backers waited some extra time and got the cards they originally thought they were getting free of any errors. Then Paul sold the errors on his site like Jackson is planning to do with his errors.

I canceled my pledge for this project because it was around Christmas time and I wanted to save. I am not personally impacted by all this so this is just an observational opinion. However, if I were in this position, I would wait for a reprint of the original design and prefer not to deal with a new design/v2/new project/refund.

Hey Scott,

I think the top right version is the strongest, and boldest, of the four. I couldn't resist taking that version and playing around with it to give an idea what I was picturing with a monster movie poster style. It's rough!

thanks, Randy

Awesome! Thanks a lot! It means a lot to me that you spent time on this yourself. I owe you big time.

I see what you are saying now with the colors. I also really like the textured background. It definitely shows a lot more depth than just a flat color. I also dig the beveling on the letter and pip. Great ideas.
