Just thought I would throw this up here (I think thats the thing to do),
I am currently in a trade with Sinsandman. I am sending him 3 Karnival Inferno Decks, and 1 Inferno Uncut. He is sending me 1 Vortex and 1 White Monarch.

Due to a slight delay my end, his went out today (which may count as monday, I'm not sure). I don't know when he sent his but I trust I'll recieve them in good time :)

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Price of rare decks?
« on: January 12, 2013, 05:50:19 PM »
Yeah, I wonder whether we'll see all these rare decks come down and down in price, or whether they'll increase. I imagine white fan backs will go up since there really are so few, but BG1E and Gold Arcanes and LTD's etc will come down since over the years (8 years since the BG1E... Makes me feel old) they've trickled down to collectors, and so their demand dwindles.

I completely forgot about S&M V1 (I am not a D&D fan...) and when I said prized deck, I meant the kinda of deck that people either struggled to get hold of, or were very limited. Personally I'd take a sepia Split spades lions over monarchs, or even better - the tally ho split spades. But usually in deck collection videos and forums the decks I mentioned get special attention; with the influx of custom cards, most decks are in 2,500 deck print runs which means a gold label spectrum is 2 as rare as BG1E, but that was never released for sale. It gets confusing lol

Okay thanks, out of curiosity what were the other decks you could think of?

So, if I am right, I believe there are around 8-10 rare decks, that people 'prize'. These would be:

Jerry's
BG1E
Gold Arcane
Black and White Fan Back Set (together or not at all I say).
Red Artifice
White Monarchs
White Centurions
Brown Wynn
Cage Gardens
LTDs

So my question is, what do you guys think these are worth? The market tends to flux, and people differ on whether the decks get more expensive or less expensive. E seems to be out of BG1E and I don't know if LTD really took off like Gold Arcanes and BG1E did. So can anyone give me a price list on these decks? I'd rather expertise, not just ebay searches. Thanks :)

Thank you every body :)

Sounds good :)
I like the courtcards and the video has an annoyingly catchy song in it :) My favourite thing has to be the plastic characters you are offering :) however, be prepared for a huge backlash against $8 shipping, and early birds not being made avaliable to international customers.

Luckily I don't care for this deck at all so I don't have to complain about shipping!  But yeah, the lack of early bird to International is a real slap in the face, quite insulting and no reason for it.

Aha I kinda agree, I rarely back on kickstarter, at the moment I've backed the ancients and Sean Whelans new deck. I try not to complain about shipping anymore :L but the early bird thing stung a little, I visited when there were only three backers, and to be excluded was a bit like ouch... But priorities are priorities, I just hope it gets funded.

Those cards do look awesome :L first deck I've seen to have high price and high shipping, but thats up to the company I guess. Hopes this gets funded because they look amazing.

Does anybody know of any good Mechanics/Card Sharp/k books? Obviously the expert at the card table and phantoms at the card table are musts, do you know any others?

Just to wade in on the international shipping thing (as someone who has many times complained about it here and elsewhere) - just don't back.

I hate paying high international fees because I feel like I am footing the bill for 'FREE DOMESTIC SHIPPING' - am I actually footing the bill? No. There cost is taken from the deck, the amount of international customers is usually not enough to cover the cost of all the domestic ones. However, being the only set of customers to pay any shipping and handling leaves a sour taste.

I must say though, after about a year of whining about international shipping I've calmed down now because I realized that kickstarter wasn't what I thought it was. I assumed (through all the propaganda) that you 'pledged' on kickstarter to help a guy out, and as such you were 'rewarded' for your generosity. This is usually never the case anymore... If you think about vortex we got this forum, if you think about tendril the backers were enabled to see aurum information early and back on kickstarter for those, CCCC always do an amazing job as well, what I like about them is the actual special rewards, like the dice.

Those three companies I named in my opinion brought the community together for a common goal, to produce great decks. In return, those companies were loyal to their customers. Nowadays kickstarter acts as a presale, you order some decks 3 months in advance, most likely to add to your collection. In my opinion and judging from what alex posted earlier, I believe kickstarter for decks will end up being a resellers investment program. Let's face it as the seller you offload say 72 decks to 5 big resellers ~ $2500 made and you've five packages to ship out. As the buyer, you get the deck semi cheap (reseller price plus their profit), and you can combine shipping with all the other decks you want. Saving about a third. Who loses? Only those that can't get resellers on board.

It sucks not to be able to get involved with the kickstarter course, but from my experience you dont actually miss much, and those special exclusives are shit most times. Dice good, Chips nice (wont use, since I won't play with the deck), brick boxes lovely. Stickers fuck, crappy t-shirts piss off, a cap? No thank you. Kickstarter is dying for cards.

tl;dr
We should all stop bitching about international shipping, kickstarter sucks, I get decks from resellers and am happy about it :)

You're welcome.

The two way back thing is just a nicety - I've seen some magicians want it and most card collectors dabble in magic. I myself don't use my nice decks to do magic with but those who buy half a brick or more probably will, wait until more responds to this thread and see what the consensus is.

The legendary deck? David Blaine has a legendary deck in production, with a printer outside the USPCC. I don't know that much about it but some guys here on the discourse have received advanced copies. Heres the thread for that deck:

I like it, in the last few years there have been a few oriental-ish decks. We've had the red, blue, gold dragon backs, the gong and the zodiac, the game of deaths and the china towns, not to mention the legendary deck we'll soon see from DB. So you really have to push the mythical creature side of this deck.

I assume on each ace we'll see a different creature (Like phoenix on the ace of hearts) - I like that idea.

Who are you aiming at? As a card collector I love this, I love the back and the corners - however some magicians like two way backs, and I don't think this is totally two way.

Who were you thinking of printing with, and what other things would match this deck?

I love it when somebody finishes a design and brings it up for a few tweaks, it means that we can hope to see it quickly, but our inputs are valued. Keep up the good work :)

Playing Card Plethora / Merz67
« on: January 04, 2013, 08:29:06 PM »
So... What's up with this guy?
I have a long history with Merz, and for a while I was sort of an advocate of his. I liked him... Before I got wise.

I first came across him watching a deck collection video (I don't know about you guys, but I do this weekly/biweekly). They held up a deck I had never seen before, and that made me think it was rare. I mean we've all heard of a Gold Arcane, or BG1E and you don't need to own them to know about them, but to see a deck that you'd never heard of, you get thinking. That deck was Bicycle Tie Dye. I googled it, amazoned it, ebayed it and eventually found it for sale - $60. I believe I was 14 at the time, I said no dice.

A year or so later I found it on amazon for £9 ($13.50), with a birthday 2 weeks away I promptly emailed my mum a link with a hope. I luckily received the deck and I was stupidly excited, you have to know that the favourite part of my collection is the brick of bicycle coloured rider backs. I was a little disappointed with the jokers but I loved the deck and it advertised Merz67.

That was when I became aware of him and I have to say I was impressed. Over the last few years I have read a lot of bad things about him; all of which I agree with. The barrage of his 'clip art' decks is awful. I'll only buy another one if I become really rich and really completist.

However I maintain he is a strong seller, I recently bought the david blaine magic deck trio for £14 ($21)  including shipping to the UK (Other people in england should know how good value this is). I also stumbled upon his Amazon UK identity - "Now that's a deal" is the only UK trader to sell trace decks, the animal skins deck and even the tie dye deck. From there I got a few cheap bikes, including a Dessert Shield Secret Weapons deck for £5 ($8) with shipping.

I recently became aware of the fact that bicycle promote him on their website - so who the F is he? He isn't John from acekingcards, or Mike from bmpokerworld or Jason from 1Eyedjack. I can't seem to find any information on him other than his mysterious name - who is he? What are his connections? How can he ram 3000 clip art decks through bicycle every year?

I know some of you know just about everything, any info on this guy?

I may have something ;) It's seeming to take forever though :L

I should have stated that the 17-20K was for a 5K run, and aside from that I think we have everything covered.

Thanks Don, anyone else have an input?

Design & Development / Problems with Kickstarter
« on: December 30, 2012, 05:15:14 AM »
Hey guys,
I thought there should be a topic for designers that want to get their decks made, and don't know too much about the flaws/issues they may hit. Whilst I haven't completed a project on Kickstarter, I've done extensive research and back a few projects. On top of this we have plenty of members that have experience (Alex, Paul, etc) or very knowledgable ones (Don, etc).

So hopefully this helps for new comers.

The first thing to note is that Kickstarter costs... A lot. After kickstarter and Amazon take their cuts you are looking at 90% of what is pledged. What does this mean? Say you list a deck as $10, you'll lost $1 to amazon and kickstarter - if your margins are tight, be careful.

You really have to sell. Some of the most successful projects have been from those that are present in the forums. If people interact with you, and you are selling yourself as well as the project, more people will jump on.

Momentum, once a project starts to gather momentum things seem to take care of themselves, the hard bit is getting it up and going.

Your goal. When setting your goal beware that you really have to reach it, but it also has to cover your costs. There is no point having a $10,000 goal, reaching it and then defaulting. From what I've seen, I'd recommend $17,000-$20,000.

Shipping. This is a major gripe of mine, but I'll try to stay neutral. Most american based designers offer free domestic shipping. Be warned if you offer this, you will be hit hard. But it is something people expect. What most seem to do is exploit the international shipping because aside from a pledge level on the galvanic playing cards, no one offers free international - that'd be suicidal. What I will add though is that if your international is too high people just won't pledge. For example, a recent deck had $8 price, $7 shipping. A) Do I value the deck at $15? B) Can I justify the price of the deck in shipping? The answer is normally, wait until the aftermarket. Because I will probably be able to pick it up from a reseller for about $10, and pay only a couple dollars shipping (I usually buy a brick or more from resellers of all the new cards that year. One time I bought 50 decks from BMPoker, this makes shipping literally a dollar). Does this matter? If you're circle city cards, no. If you are new and fledgling and need every backer you can get, don't alienate people. I for one would rather a higher deck price and cheaper shipping - for some weird reason $10 deck, $5 shipping would get me.

State and distributer tax - dependant on what state you are in, you may be liable for certain taxes, and so you should look into getting what I believe is called a sellers certificate. I am not american so I don't know the proper terms; any help Don?

Extras - Some popular kickstarters have had extras, CCC had dice and brick boxes, Tendril had card clips, nearly all have uncuts. Read around, and do some polls on what people think will suite your deck. Maybe a t-shirt? or some stickers. It depends upon your deck, for example the tendril clips looked amazing (Still waiting for one though) and so did the deck, and so protection was a good idea. Cosmo's spectrum deck needed uncuts to do justice to it. It's all relative to your design.

Anything I missed?

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Bicycle Zombie playing cards
« on: September 05, 2012, 03:30:43 PM »
I am assuming these are designed by the USPCC (the only reason they would put 'zombie free since 1885', other wise that is quite witty piss taking). If they are indeed USPCC, it's just another example of the USPCC trying to get their share of the boom in custom decks... Remember the stickman deck? Or tragic royalty deck? They aren't getting the idea that for a deck to be successful you need a theme/concept - and you can't rely on the Bicycle brand to sell your deck.

That being said, if this deck is USPCC it will probably be cheaper than the other custom decks and for that reason I'll probably pick one up - $5 won't break the bank.

If these aren't USPCC designed then I won't get them. It's one thing for the USPCC to slap their name on something and hope that it sells (Big Gun decks, anyone?) but it's another thing for some unknown designer to try to jump on the bandwagon with a gimmicky deck.

It looks okayish... More of a novelty than a 54-works-of-art deck.
