as they came in the same wooden box.

But you didn't get this brand new did you? I'm guessing it's used and that since these are bridge cards (and you need 2 decks to play bridge) one deck was lost and was replaced with the Aviators - and the other deck was just generic that came with the box.

My rule is, "never apologize"  chances are nobody even noticed it was broken.

Welco.... I mean.... Um... Hi

I usually bought em for card tricks that needed "signatures" or for "Card Warp"

Why do I put everything in quotes? I am so weird.

Pearl is to dragon as Koi is to waterfall

Many Chinese believed the dragon chased, the sun. Many drawings show this as a "flaming ball". Over the years, the sun changed color from a fiery ball to a silver pearl. This is known as the "night shining pearl" or the huoh chuh, "fire pearl".

The link between dragons and the pearl is told in a legend about Chi Liang, the Marquis of Sui, who was a Minister of State.  One day Chi Liang was out walking and he found a wounded dragon, he administered a simple medicine and saved its life.

Sometime later, he saw the dragon with a pearl in its mouth. The dragon said "I am the son of His Majesty the Dragon, and I am in debt to you for saving my life, and I have brought this pearl to thank you for your aid."

Of course it doesn't have to be Chinese in nature.  The "Worm" encountered by King Arthur's knight Peredur had a stone in its tail that had the ability to turn everything it touched to gold. The Vedic dragon Vritra hid the sun. The Caribs people of Dominica believed in a dragon with a diamond stone on its head, that some thought was an eye. Uncegila, was a dragon in mythology of the Brulé Sioux that had a cold heart made of flashing red crystal.  And scores of other dragons around the world ate, buried, or held similar "round things."

But... I doubt any of that helps solve the puzzle.

Standards are about $2.50/deck...so the brick alone is worth $30

On the one hand, in a big-box store, Bicycles can be had for as little as under $1.25 a deck.

Yea, I was just at Sam's Club today (or what it Costco?) and this same brick is only $14.95 - not trying to be argumentative, just saying you CAN get these cards a lot cheaper.

It's a nice gaff, but to be honest, I have never heard of a trick where I'd need a mirror card. Can someone give an example?

Playing Card Plethora / Re: In what casino are these cards?

One last factor - most casinos don't use borderless cards with a simple pattern like that anymore.  They've added some kind of border or another to make certain card sleights more difficult

I'm not trying to disagree, only to add my 2 cents.  I made a trip out to Vegas almost once a year, always bought decks from Casinos and all of my decks (almost 50) are borderless. The reason wasn't so much for card sleights, but for amateur marking. Having no border on a card keeps the players from marking key cards on the white border while the cards are in play.

The other reason is that cheap decks are not always consistent in their border printing/cutting. Some if examined can be seen to be thicker or wider depending on where the card is cut, card sharks will memorize border cuts with cards that are in play.

I am sure Don is right in that many Casinos are changing their policies. Who am I to know the mind of a Casino owner? But I agree with Don, a true Casino has their logo on the back - if these are cards from a legit Casino, i'd be surprised if you could discover who it is, it's probably just some whole in the wall.

Some DVDs are mastered with a zillion (OK, ninety or so) false video files in order to thwart copying programs like HandBrake

Well, this doesn't apply to magic, but that's how Disney does theirs. But their "false files" are even the same length and size of the master. I have yet to find software that "cracks the mouse."

andBrake does much of what you're describing - for free

It does, and I must be not as smart as some people, because Handbrake had difficulty ripping some of my more locked down DVD's. I'm not trying to do anything illegal, I just want a digital copy of my legally owned media.

I know it sounds like a weird post to make in a card collecting forum, but we all purchase these "downloads" or certain decks even come with downloads and what ends up happening is you have 3 or 4 different file types - and typically NONE of them play on your device.

I need my magic to be portable and discreet.

1592
Technology sure has come a long way since I first started out in Magic. My bookshelf has several bound books and leaflets that I purchased from the Magic store when I was just starting out. Later, I ended up buying DVD's and downloading PDF files.

But now what?

What if I want to watch one of my DVDs and spend a few hours practicing, but my wife wants to watch her cooking shows? And I certainly don't want to watch my DVD's with roommates walking through the house.

Of course, you could say, "Watch them on your computer." But in truth. then I can only practice where I can haul my laptop around, and currently my magic collection is so large and in so many different places and formats, it's almost unreasonable.

Well, I have been working on this puzzle for a while now and I just might have the solution.

The first was purchasing Aimersoft Video Converter. It was the most versatile file conversion program I could find. This software does 2 things.
1. It rips my DVD's into a digital file
2. it converts my current downloaded material into a file extension that I can use/transfer.

The issue is, each Magic House offers downloads of various file types. I think I even had some early ellusionist downloads that were real player files! How awful

So my goal is to rip/convert my material into a playable medium so that I can watch it on my kindle fire. The Kindle fire is a very inexpensive tool that allows me to watch full color video files; and all I need to do is make sure they are in an mp4 format.

Now, as I pick which DVD's or files I wold like to take with me on the go, (I could even take this camping) I just find the file I want, rip it to mp4, transfer it to my kindle and have a portable magic resource / library wherever and whenever I need.

Hope that helps,

you're basically getting the pads for $20 each and the decks for $5 each

True, but Tannen's already sells their pads for $20 each

http://www.tannens.com/shop//cart.php?m=product_detail&p=6483

But great suggestions - all of them!!!

1596
First off, yes I did a search for "closeup pad" and didn't see anything. I am hoping this is in the right section, but feel free to move it, if I got it wrong.

I can search for close up pads on penguin, ebay and anywhere else as well as the next guy, but I was hoping someone here might know of a good quality product for a fairly simple price. I totally used to have one, and I have no clue where it ended up. This is totally card related by the way. Maybe you don't even use one, but just remove your shirt and use that instead, hoping the ladies will be looking at your massive pecs and ripped abs instead of your sloppy pass? These are the things that we'd like to know.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

yea, I am in the same boat, I had them all in my shopping cart with my finger over the button and my wife in the other room yelling at me, "We owe taxes this year!"

Curse you Uncle Sam for standing between me and cards. I need a sugar daddy.
