Playing Card Plethora / Re: Grinders Deck - coming soon to Kickstarter
« on: September 24, 2015, 04:02:12 PM »

The Grinders Kickstarter will be launching Tomorrow at Noon EDT!!

There is a chance for a second Deck (details are in the project page), but I wanted to keep this campaign as simple as possible. After the craziness of 3 Bowling Decks, Wooden Nickels, Uncuts and Bowling Pins between 2 separate KS projects, I needed to make sure this project was streamlined (for my sanity!).

thanks, Randy

Grinders Playing Cards
By Randy Butterfield (Midnight Cards)

Hey Everyone,

My latest personal design is almost ready, so I thought it was time to get a thread going for it. The Grinders Deck is my T11-style design. Printing will be through Legends. The Tuck Box will utilize Black matte stock and the Tuck designs will be in Copper AND Silver Foils.

The semi-custom Courts are based from a more old-school set from Legends, with plenty of extra design elements I've added in! One Deck, NO special, limited, rare, seal sticker or handmade variations.

For those that don't know the Poker definition for a Grinder (for those that haven't seen the spectacular Poker movie, Rounders) - A grinder is a poker player who plays tight, low-risk poker with the intention of making a small but steady profit. Simply speaking, they "grind" away until reaching their goal. Grinders tend to shy away from both making aggressive moves and combating aggressive opponents in favor of making the safe play. Unlike most players who look to make as much money from each individual hand as possible, grinders are comfortable with winning small pots and rarely, if ever, play for high stakes.

The Kickstarter will be launching sometime in September!

Thanks, Randy

Design & Development / Re: The Slick Deck (...again)- WIP custom deck 2
« on: September 13, 2015, 06:00:31 PM »
I would suggest renaming this Deck the Keyline Deck. The Art looks a lot like an Illustrator file in Keyline (outline) mode, and I think it would go over better than the current name. When paired with your screenname, Oily Swinyard, the Slick name gives off the impression that it will be an Oil Slick themed design.

Thanks, Randy

Playing Card Plethora / Re: LEGENDS PLAYING CARD COMPANY - Official Topic
« on: September 05, 2015, 11:44:13 PM »
Just a quick update Legends deck that I have been using for a while now.. Spitfire Draconian deck you see below has been used for about 6 months now and as you can see, it had some stains on the edges of the cards.

I remember Don mentioned something about cleaning Classic Twin Decks, so I decided to give it a try and the results is amazing.

The cards were cleaned with damp microfibre cleaning cloth, surprisingly the water didn't affect the edges at all. I can't imagine USPCC deck treated in the same way.

It's great to see the Draconians holding up through 6 months of use!!
I love Legends' Classic Finish. Every Deck I do with Legends will utilize their Classic Finish.

Thanks, Randy

The Conversation Parlor / Re: Theft is always theft!
« on: June 29, 2015, 04:01:47 PM »

There's also a similar theft that happens on a daily basis - eBay sellers using Renders, Photos or Presentation Graphics created by the designer of the Deck. I remember how PO'ed I was the first time I saw a bunch of my Renders on a few eBay listings for some original ORNATES (back in 2012). 3d Renders take a LOT of time to setup, Render and cleanup. I didn't send any e-mails to the eBay sellers, but I definitely wasn't happy about it. Over the years I've gotten a lot more blasé about it.

You could eBay almost any modern Deck and find the original images from the designers Kickstarter project or online store, including Product Photos from Theory 11, Ellusionist, Dan & Dave, Blue Crown, Kings Wild, Encarded..... It's such a common occurence, I think most designers have also given in to the blasé attitude that I have about it.

I did a test before writing this, and searched eBay for "Artisans Playing Cards". There's so many professional Product Shots in sellers' listings that it almost looks like Ellusionist has dozens of eBay accounts!

What do some of you other designers on here think about the eBay sellers using their Renders, Photos or Presentation Graphics?

thanks, Randy

Hey Rob,

I received my Wild Turkey Pen a little while ago. Top notch quality! It turned out great!!

My in-laws have been visiting here in Indianapolis, so we drove down and had a weekend exploring the Kentucky Bourbon Trail (we visited Wild Turkey, Jim Beam, Four Roses and Maker's Mark). My knuckleheads were pretty bored most of the time, but the Wild Turkey visitor's center had a couple Barrel Turkeys for the kids to goof off on! I should've brought the Pen with me!!

thanks, Randy

It turned out great guys!! I was nervous about this one!

That right there is one of the more amazing things I've seen that clearly demonstrates the difference in the quality of the cards between LPCC and USPC.  The other was the rather popular photo showing a pack of Bikes next to a pack of Legends, with the Bikes' unfortunately ragged die cut and the nearly perfect cut on the Legends.

Can anyone else provide demonstrations of the superior quality of Legends cards over USPC?  How about a comparison of a deck from each maker, one year after serious use?

Hm that gonna take me a long time.
But I am currently making a comparison between draconians and bicycle master (which is suppose to be 1 of the good deck from USPCC). I am using them on a daily basis to practice and store them at the same conditions. We will see how this go in the Next 4 weeks.

Go Draconians!

Hey Everyone!

The Bowl-A-Rama campaign is past it's Funding Goal!! The first Stretch Goal is the UV Spot Ink on the Red and Black Tucks. The main Stretch Goal is Unlocking the Cosmic Lanes Deck that will utilize GLOW-IN-THE-DARK Ink! Here's an image of the Cosmic look.

thanks, Randy

@Collector - the juxtaposition of the Crowns matched with the less formal Bowling wear is a big part of what I like about the Courts. It's an odd combo that adds to the charm of the unique design!

A couple more days until Launch!

The Black Deck and Red Deck will each have separate sets of Face Cards. Here's a couple graphics that show what will be modified between the two - different Team Names and PIP Layouts for the Numbers, different outfits and colors for the Courts.

Thanks! Randy

I love bowling -- I'm a big fan of Walter Ray Williams Jr!

I like what's been done with the 6 of diamonds... the washout!

I'm guessing other undesirable leaves such as the big four (or the bucket), greek church, and 7-10 will also be represented on number cards for the 4s, 5s, and 2s, respectively.

Good stuff. I'll definitely be in for a few decks.

Thanks!!

Yep, I think all of the good splits will be represented. There are 80 different Numbers Cards between the Red and Black Decks. The Aces, Tens and Nines are mostly the same Pin layouts, but the others have a lot of different leaves!

I watched the documentary League of Ordinary Gentleman on Netflix a couple months ago (it's about the attempted resurgence of the PBA). I thought it was great! There are four Court Characters named after the main Bowlers in the documentary - Walter, Ray, Wayne and Pete.

Thanks, Randy

Playing Card Plethora / Midnight BOWL-A-RAMA Decks - (KS)

BOWL-A-RAMA Playing Cards

Hey everyone,

My next solo project will be launching on Kickstarter this coming Thursday, Noon EDT. After doing a lot of baroque and elegant type of designs, I wanted to change it up and do something FUN! The Midnight Bowl-A-Rama Decks will be printed and fulfilled by Legends. I hope you like the change-of-pace from the norm! Max released an article earlier today that has some more info:

http://www.maxplayingcards.com/en/2015/03/06/midnight-bowl-a-rama-playing-cards-strike/

Thanks! Randy

Wow, after seeing the photos I'm going to put some "convention money" away for next year!  It looked like fun.
2015 convention will be in Orlando Seaworld area Oct. 7 to 10, 2015. It will be held at the Doubletree Hilton  http://www.doubletreeorlandoseaworld.com/
Looks like a great venue at an attractive price of $99 per night double occupancy with a 20% discount on all food purchases at restaurants in the complex. Start saving! :)

Sweet!! We'll be there for sure.

Thanks, Randy

If someone unpacked the White Wolf deck, please post some photos. Mine will arrive in just a few long weeks. Anyway, if someone will make a review will have a lot of views, that's for sure. I guess a lot of people are thinking about paying extra for the box or not. I was thinking to buy another box and extra decks, but...I saw the comments and I change my mind.

I don't understand why is this mysterious thing about this decks...no photos about the cards from this decks on E. It's just a marketing thing to sell the expensive wood box?

It looks like there's photos of all of the Decks' cards on the product page, including the White Wolf Deck (http://www.ellusionist.com/prohibition-6-deck-boxed-set-playing-cards.html). Definitely enough to get an idea of what the rest of the courts and faces look like.

Thanks, Randy

Alright, I've been given the greenlight to reveal my part in the Breaking Bad Decks!

I did everything except for the Character Drawings. The Artist Albino Dragon hired did an excellent job with the Character Drawings, but they needed someone to take it from there and create a Deck(s) Design that fit the mood and brand look of the show. I'm a big fan of Breaking Bad and had a blast doing it!

The Kickstarter page is not yet ready, but the Decks are available via Pre-Order as part of Albino Dragon's Black Friday Sale (http://albinodragon.com/).

Thanks, Randy

ADMIN EDIT: made the link live and fixed the misspelling!

Thanks for the nod Fez!!

I'll throw out my projects from 2014, if it will help for anyone thinking about seconding:

White ORNATE and Obsidian Decks, LUXX Decks, Brazil Deck, production work on the Boardwalk Deck (plus a little design work), Draconian Decks, design work on ______ ___ and all of __ __ _______. One of the unlisted projects will be known this month!

Thanks, Randy

69
Here's an image they posted on Instagram. Definitely their "Carribean Rum" brand of the prohibition collection! It's a cool look and interesting idea (which I saw on FB that Jackson presented to them earlier this year!). For me personally, it's wayyyyy too close to my day job!! After working with these type of packages all day, it's interesting to see something similar pop up in my night "job".

I'll definitely get one of each Deck though.

Thanks, Randy

Lux, Luxe, Luxx's everywhere!!

Earlier in the year when Paul wanted to Trademark the two X's in the LUXX Deck, I thought it was being too cautious. Now I see why he did it! It's crazy how many Lux_ Companies, Decks and Deck variations have been released or Kickstarted this year.

I think it's funny that this guys calling his company Luxe Playing Card Company. I wonder what the guys at Lux Playing Cards think of that! (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/luxplayingcards/aves-bicycle-playing-cards-fine-art-deck-inspired?ref=users)

Thanks Don and Fes!!

Just 1 Hour left! After today it switches into full-out Production Mode (which shouldn't be hard since all of the Print Files are at the Printer).

Randy,

With your current KS promotion, would it be TOO jerky to 'refer' two of my other KS accounts?

/bamabenz

Nah, that's fine! As Long as you don't decrease your original pledge, it's still eligible.

Thanks, Randy

For any non-Backers of the Draconian project, here's a look at the Coin prototype. CFA is working on a lot of changes to get the details to look right on the Dragon Head side, but the Scales side looks and feels sweet!

I get updates about the project by reading the project updates sent by email. As for your question, the answer is in my post above yours.

EDIT: I sent them a PM and they're on it.

Hey Spice42,

I thought I had said it in one of the KS Updates. I knew I had mentioned a few times on the project page and UC, but I guess it wasn't in an actual Update or over here. Sorry about that!

A lot of Backers ended up sending PMs to get their Tracking Numbers over the last few weeks, so it's hard to keep track of when and where we ask to send us a PM for Tracking info. We were NOT happy at all about the fulfillment center's performance on this project. It was a tough one to handle!

thanks, Randy
