If you were just starting a collection, what would be your top 10 must have decks for your collection, not to exceed $50 a deck? If you could ecxplain why, that would be great. This is just to have a little fun.
NOTE: You can't use "I got a great Deal on ebay" to put a high end deck on your list

If I had to choose 10 decks to have in a 10 deck collection, they would be (in no order AND subject to change):

1.  Uusi - Bohemia - because i love the large hand painted pips and the simple yet complex single color courts.
2.  Seasons Set - because everyone loves a deck set, and why not this beautifully customized black/white limited set
3.  Federal 52 - Pick one. Personally, I like the color and design of the silver certificate. Beautifully intricate and just a glorious box to put on display.
4.  Tally Ho (ohio made) - I don't know if the Erlanger version is too different but I've been handling an Ohio tally for a LONG time now and it has yet to deteriorate in its fanning, dribbling, faro-ing, cuts, spreads...
5.  Split Spades (silver) - Box is great, card backs are great, handling is great, great.
6.  Ornates - original or kickstarter. Pick a color. Very eye catching backs and unique courts and general card design
7.  Aurum - different color, different back design, exquisite detail throughout
8.  Noc v2 - I am a fan of its simplicity
9.  Virtuoso decks - unique design and cool box + pleasing courts
10. Pr1me Playing Cards - not uspcc, beautiful thin borders, why not.

1. Ultimate Deck - beautiful,  intricate tuck box, unique design on every card
2. Unbranded Black Reserve Note (Does this count? It was $40 on Kickstarter,  lol.  If not,  I'll switch it to the Branded Black Reserve Note) -  another beautiful and intricate tuck box,  embossing and red foil on inside,  beautiful artwork by Jackson Robinson
3. Aurum,  White Gold - Pearlescent tuck box that glimmers in the light,  embossing,  gold foil,  intricate detailed line work,  custom die cut.
4. Grotesque (Still have a chance to get it on KS!) - beautiful court cards and intricate,  detailed artwork.
5. The Black Book of Cards - Sets the standard for all typography decks.
6. Bohemia Set - love the painted look of the courts and pips
7. Requiem - Beautiful artwork,  red card faces,  unique pips.
8. Origins - Intricate tuck boxes (can you tell I'm really into tuck boxes? Lol) and really lovely courts.
9. Seasons - I like the way the courts are drawn
10. Deco set - foil in tuck boxes,  subtle pattern on card faces,  really nice color scheme; love Paul Carpenter's work.

In no particular order:
~Split Spades-Silver as they are still available and inexpensive, and that back design just slays me!  They feel different than other cards somehow.
~Tendril-The white border on the black cards is an innovation that revolutionizes the black deck, no chipping here! The back design looks random yet isn't. The colors on this one just pop.
~Legends V1 for Magic & V2 for anything. The back design is awesome, the Asian influence and intricacies make me happy and I love dragons. The V1's have so many bells an whistles I haven't even found them all yet!
~Lee Asher's 605 Fournier. Once these are broken in the handling is great.  The back design is filigreed and fancy. So far I have been able to use these with not much sign of wear.
~Federal 52's original for me, choose your favorite! I love the fact that they are an homage to the artwork on currency and yet have transcended the concept and have set a new bar for design and artwork for playing cards.
~Anything by Uusi. My favorites are Bohemia (sadly, I do not have any yet) The back designs on all of their decks make me happy.  The painted pips and original court cards also have set a new bar for design and art.
~Ace Fulton's Casino for the homage to Jerry's Nugget which I could never afford.  I am sure the handling isn't the same, however I have never touched a Jerry's. Blue is my favorite color, choose yours!
~Bee RJRTC Watermelon- These handle really well.  I love how the packets stay together.  Either color, and again the back design~great!
~Theory 11's Sentinels. The back design is simple, not my favorite but the court cards and the symbolism really do it for me.  Also they are plastic coated and handle differently, and well.
~Origins, I can only rate these on the art and back design of course!  But with Bee stock I think they will handle well.  I love the historic influence and the court cards are elegant, understated and classy. The back design is intricate and interesting.

Tough to pick just 10 as a stand by classic, I go with Bicycle Dragon Back Red color.  I really love Dragons!  Thanks, this was fun!

Here's my list, no particular order and I know it's difficult to come up with 10.

Bicycle Rider Backs - By today's custom standards nothing to go nuts over, but the classic deck can't be left out.
Black Tiger - Where it all started
Federal 52 (Original) - Amazing concept and presentation.
Aurum - Bold design and line work with amazing detail
Bohemia - A different approach to custom decks, a more classic "Artistic" design concept.
Split Spade Lions - Design and Handling
Bee Erdnase 216 - Classic throwback design.
Seasons Set (Primavera / Seronda) - Just a beautiful set of cards.
Artisan (White) - Great design, one of those decks you can hand to anyone and they'll be impressed.
Curator - Understanding the artistic process is enough to land this one on the list.

This is a hard list to make, but here they are in no particular order:

Federal 52 Silver Certificate - beautiful design, concept and execution
Silver Split Spades - amazing design and one of the more excellent usage of metallic inks
Mana (original) - the best usage of metallic inks
Bee - Nothing beats the classic Bee design (AoS and Jokers), not to mention the durability of the stock
Madison Dealers (V1/V2) - A great cheap marked design that's fairly hard to detect
EPCC's Exquisite - excellent reproduction, great stock, sideload tuckcase and subtle one way front and back design
Monarch (any colour) - great design and usable for any occasion
Animal Kingdom - fun complete custom deck that goes to a good cause
Erdnase 216 - nice reproduction and a truly unique stock/finish
JAQK - one of the early custom decks and still amazing

Mine.. I dont have a large collection so Ill go based on what I have.

1. Exquisites-- (CARC) Just feel awesome in the hand. Like they are hand sanded!

2. Smoke and Mirrors-- Denim 1st version. Pressed tight, Like the courts, and the blue metallic pips

3. Ellutionist purple Artifice-- me like purple, custom pips, and custom courts... and purple.

ohhhh puuuuuurple
4.  Jaqk Cellars--  Colorful without pulling a  full gaudy.

5. Federal 52- Design meets functionality awesomeness.
ok so this isnt a picture, but you cant swing a stick and not find a picture of the federal deck

6. Fantastique-- Im a sucker for a unique suit color, and cool jokers, and flip-books

7.White Knuckles-- Cool courts, cool backs.. could do with-out the massive tape-worm infection on the Aces.. but oh well.

8. Karnival Dose- Creepy and I like it

9.Royal Optik-- As with Federal, for me it's design meets function.

10.Bicycle Calaveras- Day of the dead + Cards = Yes please!!!
I like to call paper coatings a finish. It makes Don happy.

In no particular order, and without much explanation (If I get started talking about these decks, the forum server would probably crash from the word count!!

Aurum
Ornates
Federal 52
Monarchs
Medallions
Artisan
Luxury
Stranger
Split Spades
Whispering Imps
Imperial

11 decks. Oops, one too many. Just consider that extra one a bonus pick!

These are from a design/visual appeal standpoint since in today's world, it can be very difficult to notice any difference in handling/feel from one deck to another. There are several more that I would add that aren't physically out now (Independence, Gold, One Million, Triplicates, White Ornates, et cetera), so I just listed ones that you could buy/have shipped today.

Uh, speaking as the guy who's written more than 13.8% of ALL posts in this forum, you'd have a much longer way to go before you're crashing any servers around here!  That's more than one in eight posts written by me!  If I haven't done it yet, it can't be done!  :))

But Don, your posts are spread out. I could probably match your total word count in just one post if I got going good! :-)

Ok Derp, you asked for it!!

Aurum: I really love the stark contrast between the open space on the tuck and the complexity of the main design. Not too busy, not too simplistic. I also love the fact that the White and laser editions (I have many of both, plus the standard edition) have the same design elements, but massive changes from the standard, or previous edition, deck. It's not like "The exotic edition is exactly the same as the standard edition, but with embossing!!" Paul made a huge effort to add worthy value to each higher edition. As a collector, I love that, and proudly display his art in my home.

Ornates: Firstly, I am a gem collector, so the colors/names strike a chord with me. That said, the design elements are very unique and different from other decks. I love the fact that they are on a darker background as well. The design itself flows very well, and is very pleasing to my eye. The series just has that special something that creates appeal. I see that in a lot of Randy's decks, and that's why I have a large quantity of everything that he has released.

Federal 52: I collect currency, so there's that aspect to design with. I ahve always been fascinated with art from engravings, and his work in this series replicates that with amazing realism. Jackson doesn't skimp on design. It's very obvious that he puts in a ton of time and effort, not to mention heart, into his work. With his decks, he gives backers a part of himself, and buyers respond in droves. Give people more than their money's worth, and they will respond in droves. When people see my collection of Federal series uncuts on display, the love them. They are absolutely SHOCKED when I tell them that he drew them by hand!

Monarchs: I love gold on dark! The white (silver/golds) are ok, but I think that the lack of deep contrast takes away from the design. I love line art decks, especially when the design is meaningful and clean. Did I mention that I love gold on dark?! ;-)

Medallions: Another gold on dark deck with a clean and meaningful design. Satin tuck paper with the gold color (as with the Artisans) really pops for me. It looks very, very luxurious. The back design is intricate without being too busy. It strikes a good balance between too little and too much.

Artisan: Wow, I really, really like Artisans. This is one of the few decks that I use regularly, in addition to collecting them. That Ace design on the tuck just blows me away. The effort to not just make lines, but to incorporate elements that give it a 3D effect, love that. Did I also mention that I love gold on dark?! :-)  I love analyzing the detail on the card backs. I wish that a company could printt gold foil on black vellum card backs, and then coat them so that the gold foil wouldn't wear off, without maning them too funky or thick to handle. Even though Artisans aren't limited, they are one standard deck that I admit that I am hoarding. I'm not as much a fan of the whites for the same reason as stated abouve...the design elements tend to wash out when the foil/ink and paper color contrast wanes.

Luxury: Understated elegance. This is one of only a few decks where I love the white edition. Another great effort by Randy, and I have been lucky enough to be able to puck up the standard and metal plate/handmade editions. They are luxurious (funny how that works out, huh?!) cards and people always really like them when I display them.

Stranger: One of the few "Art on cards" decks that I like. Most of this type of deck have one or two cards that I like, but the remainder are too far out there for me. The Stranger deck has managed to maintain a high level of quality in the art on the cards. I love the vellum/satin paper tuck. The Stranger Deck's tuck box, in my humble opinion, is the most beautiful tuck ever made. Outstanding! Aurum's laser cut tuck gets the award for the most technologically advanced tuck, as well as the one with the biggest "WOW" factor, due to the laser cutting.

Split Spades/Whispering Imps: I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the work and style of Mark Stutzman! I of course have all of the Blaine posters that he has done, not to mention some of his other work. I love the retro/nostalgic/deco/hard to explain look of his work!

Imperial: This one has a lot of elements taht I really like. Foil lined tucks, gold on dark, exquisite and incredible art, not just on the box, but on the cards as well. Eveidence of a great artist keeping a theme cohesive and relecting the opulence and luxuriousness of the subject (Faberge) at hand, without losing focus, getting to a level of gaudiness, or "phoning it in". Very unique and different art/theme, executed well, and worthy of a place in any collection, or in daily use. They will definitely start a conversation at any card game. Another example of getting more than your money's worth in a design. Beautiful!

By the way, I reigned it in to keep this post short, believe it or not!

If you've made it this far, thanks for your time and consideration of my opinions, and I hope that this information has helped you!

I did ask for it, and it was awesome. After number 2 I had to stop, pull up pictures of each deck, and restart. You should do some reviews of your favs man! Release the Kracken more often!

I agree with him - we could use more reviews in the Review board, especially text/photos since most of the others are video.  I say go for it.

Thank you. I may just do that one of these days. I'd much rather write than do a video. It's too bad that my job won't pay me by the word! :-)
