Welcome to the forum.

My first guess at the name was Absinthe! Perhaps because of the teaser shots a while back saying something like "52 Proof" if I remember rightly?

Tuck looks promising.

Not really a fan of alcohol-related products, but I love some designs on liquor labels. Looking forward to this project. :) (Could've sworn it's spelled indulge, but I'm not a native speaker.)
Yes, I might be the guy you remember from that thing at that place way back when.

Hi, Mike, and welcome to the forum.

Are you an E employee or just a well-connected fan?

Welcome to the forum.

My first guess at the name was Absinthe! Perhaps because of the teaser shots a while back saying something like "52 Proof" if I remember rightly?

Tuck looks promising.

I'm in agreement on the name, assuming the fill-in-the-blanks in the topic title is correct.  The card back would indicate otherwise - either the wrong name or perhaps there's a series of decks in which Absinthe is just one of them, as suggested by CBJ.

Either way, I'm probably not getting any.  Just as I don't get decks promoting tobacco, neither do I get decks promoting alcohol.

(Could've sworn it's spelled indulge, but I'm not a native speaker.)
Wait, I thought it said indulge also. What is induldge? Is this absinthe?

Yeah, that's a grade-A category-1 typographical error, better known as a "typo"!  :))  Hope someone at E caught that!

Perhaps another collaboration between stranger and stranger and a card company.

I wish they would release the "induldge" deck if it was a real typo. Then we will have an example to show for typo errors for new promising designers.  :P :P :P

It does look nice, but I won't be backing.  It's the no-alcohol-or-tobacco-decks thing.

I'm a big concerned about those edges - if you look under the indices in that spiral fan, you can see something that printed into the bleed on some of the cards.  Hopefully those are ads or jokers.  The thing of it is, though, if you follow the curve to the right, in the out-of-focus area there appears to be more cards printed into the bleed.  Optical illusion?

Don,

Sometimes certain decks require you to step out of the guidelines of "designing only for magicians". This deck definitely has courts that bleed out to the edges. The courts are gorgeous and I felt like they needed room to breathe instead of being trapped inside borders :)

No, I understand this.  I was only speaking my own personal preferences.  Overall it's actually a very attractive deck, even if it isn't my cup of tea.

The issue with courts in the bleed area has nothing to do with magic and everything to do with practical design for whatever purpose the deck is used for.  If you have some cards printed into the bleed (in this case, the courts) and some cards that aren't, those that are in the bleed have a much better chance to be spotted from the edge of the deck, meaning that as a player I can identify when court cards are being dealt out.  In most games, that's valuable intel that would imbalance the odds.

A prime example of this in action is Lee McKenzie's original "Empire" deck.  It was a very lovely deck, but I can really only use it for solitaire.  There's a middle-of-the-side banner that's red or black based on the card's suit color and there are banners at the indices for the Aces and the court cards, also color-matched to suit color.  Because all those banners print into the bleed area, I can detect when high cards are about to be dealt by simply sitting in front of the dealer and observing the top edge of the deck.  It's worse when the deck is sitting stationary on the table, like in a game of rummy - no movement and prominent placement leaves no chance of concealment.  With practice, I might even be able to tell you the next card's color.

Doesn't mean the deck isn't absolutely beautiful.  It just means it's a little less practical for every application except perhaps cardistry.  Poker players wouldn't touch a deck like that with a ten-foot pole - to them, it's essentially a marked deck.

From the peeks so far, this definitely looks like one of the most interesting and design-forward decks we've seen published by the big guys in, well, years. I'm liking the look of this a lot on the whole. Its very refreshing to see something other than rehashed and recolored bordered backs and standard courts.

Pros: Very intricate back design. The green suits are a pleasant & welcome change from the standard. It has a loose, carefree & fun feel to it, which works for this deck.

Cons: Reserved

Really love the back design, especially the way the 'A' is incorporated into the filigree, a really clean and beautiful design! I really hope to see that kind of quality design throughout the deck!

Really hate intentially blurry promotional photographs that pretentiously try to look apealing by teasing an actual image. If you want to show us cards, then show us. If you want to show teasers then at least do it in a creative way.
Kickstarter completely revolutionized the way I waste money.

The backs remind me of the Ultimate deck backs, would like to see more of the court cards. Love the style of the box.

I was thinking this too. I don't get it at all, just looks bad.
The style of the Tuck box is really cool!!!
So, is it indulge or induldge?

I'm thinking "indulge" - Mike removed the photo with the misspelling from his first post yesterday afternoon, presumably so the company can correct the tuck boxes.  I wonder if that will have an effect on the release date.

Maybe they're trying to affect a sense of olde-timey olde-elglishe to the deck to match their vintage advert aesthetic. Obviously so that when you and your friendes what to play a capitole carde game together at the theatre you can have a decke that matches the ocassione.

Waite.. Isn't Absinthe from France? As is the style of advertisemente posters I am thinking of, ala Toulouse-Lautrec?

Har har.  Seriously, it was just a typo that went unnoticed until it showed up here.  By the Victorian Era, "Olde-Tyme Englishe" was a thing of the past.

Absinthe originated in late 18th-century Neuchâtel, a canton of French-speaking western Switzerland with a flavor based on anise and other botanicals.  Its peak of popularity was in fin de siècle Paris, where it became the drink of choice for bohemians, artists and writers.  Due to having trace amounts of chemical compound called thujone, provided by the leaves and flowers of grand wormwood used in the distillation process, the drink was thought to have hallucinatory effects.  Despite the amount of the chemical being in quantities too small to affect the body, the drink was banned in the US and throughout Europe in 1915.  Over time and more scientific examination, the drink was eventually considered no more harmful than any other spirit (no, it is not a liqueur - no added sugar), but the ban wasn't lifted until the European Union started unifying laws in regard to food and beverages.  Today, there's over 200 brands made and sold throughout Europe and North America.  It's typically found in strengths of 45-74% alcohol by volume (90 to 148 proof).

Yes, Mr. Toulouse-Lautrec and many of his contemporaries dabbled in the drink, and I believe he also created some advertising posters for it before the ban.

I really like the teaser pics. The spiny spin motion blur one is fantastic haha, it incites memories for me. I like things that can do that, inspire feeling. The spins are fine, it's the wobbles you gotta watch out for. I like what I'm seeing so far, from the back to the king. The deck looks like it's going to be interesting and I'm looking forward to it.

Well, apparently it's only the 'tip of the iceberg' according to Ellusionist!

As others have said already, there seems to be a couple of alcohol themed decks on the way over and beyond Absinthe;

I'm thinking "indulge" - Mike removed the photo with the misspelling from his first post yesterday afternoon, presumably so the company can correct the tuck boxes.  I wonder if that will have an effect on the release date.

"Measure twice, cut once."

Peter McKinnon posted on UC:

As Mike mentioned, we have 6 new 100% custom and individually unique decks coming out. The typo has already been corrected for the 2nd printing of Absinthe. Due to the time restraints and the sheer amount of labour that went into getting the Absinthe tuck to the way it is (Just wait till you see it in person!) taking into account the rest of the surprises we have in store for you - the 6 + weeks it would take to reprint, foil, emboss, stamp, pack and ship tuck's to our WH would *foil* our epic plans for everyone. See what I did there? ;) Pour a little absinthe, crack these bad boys open and they may even start to look like Rum...

Moon shine.
Kickstarter completely revolutionized the way I waste money.

The people who handle playing cards are always in a world of delicate fingertip technology.

Looks like it.  Moon shine marketed as some patent medicine with a thickening agent.  I guess some traveling medicine shows were selling the stuff like that.

Looks like they're not using the standard marketing imagery for Rebellion, opting instead for something that looks like it's from maybe a century ago.  It would fit in with the Absinthe deck.

So maybe a series of alcohol themed cards that come in a wooden crate (think running moonshine) to go along with the Prohibition era? Regardless, interesting direction E is going.

Here's an image they posted on Instagram. Definitely their "Carribean Rum" brand of the prohibition collection! It's a cool look and interesting idea (which I saw on FB that Jackson presented to them earlier this year!). For me personally, it's wayyyyy too close to my day job!! After working with these type of packages all day, it's interesting to see something similar pop up in my night "job".

I'll definitely get one of each Deck though.

Thanks, Randy

By all means, induldge away!  (If we write it often enough, perhaps the dictionary will accept it as a variant spelling!)

It reminds me of the shocking discovery that judgement is now an acceptable spelling of judgment and collectable is an acceptable spelling of collectible.  Or maybe I'm getting my dictionaries from the bargain bin a little too often...

It's the lighting and the "cardboard-textured" appearance on the card's surface.  Odds are they'll be no thicker than a pack of Arcanes or something.

Because it looks like promotions of alcohol brands, I had no plans to buy any of these decks.  Still, I find it amazing that so many decks are being offered on a limited basis, part of a special set, etc. - you can't simply pay for one deck of, say, Rebellion Rum and call it a day, because they're not being sold individually (or at least not today).  You can get the set for $125, and an extra set minus the wooden box for an extra $40 - but that's it.  Six or nothing, and you have to get at least one wooden box.

It's hard not to think that the level of "elitism", for lack of a better term, is going higher and higher by the release.  This is the first big case of it with a non-crowdfunded project I can recall.  If you know of others, please tell me.

I'm also curious why E decided to make one - just one - of the decks Bicycle-branded.  I thought they pretty much ended that with Arcane, using the Bicycle brand for new designs.  And why just one?  Is it some goofy ploy to entice Bicycle-only collectors to buy the set just for the one deck?  Will it work to any noteworthy degree?

It reminds me of the Smoke & Mirror Deluxe Box Set. D&D released them as a box set only until a few months later (I think) when they released them individually with different seals.

I like the set, but I will pass for now. I'm a collector of "elitist" cards, not "elitist" storage boxes :-) , and the box itself adds too much cost to the standard card decks price. While I will pay extra for certain boxes, cool or not, I won't pay that much extra. I also don't care for the mixed portrait/landscape look when on display in the box. Either design them all one way or the other or, ideally, build the box so that they each can be displayed in their proper orientation. I'm a bit OCD like that.

Actually, from posts at UC they seem to be saying that the actual decks will all be portrait, but maybe not until 2nd edition.  Either way it should be changed so you can always swap them out if you need to later:

The decision to change orientation was from Brad. He said when these decks are hanging on a shelf in a store or in a display unit, they're always vertical. So if we have landscape orientation customers won't be able to clearly see the tuck.
...
So are the other 4 vertical? And all 6 will be vertical in the second edition?
...
Yep, all 6 will be the same portrait orientation.

Man... I was really excited about these. $125 for 6 decks, a box which (for me) might as well read
" Here, throw this away for us."  Instead of "Prohibition", and..

Quote
As a Special Offer when you add the Prohibition Set to your cart, you'll be given the opportunity to purchase 6 Extra First Edition Decks that you can safely open and enjoy, allowing you to retain the collector's value of the boxed set.

I'm not interested in the box at all. It's a good way to force people to buy a box that holds only 6 decks. I'm just gonna wait for them to release just decks.

Oh boy - now there's going to be a first edition and a second edition, subtle differences between the packaging, etc.  A fan boy's dream - or nightmare, depending on your perspective!

The decks are $40 without the box and $125 with.  I don't know if that's an $85 box in my book.  (Granted, you have to buy them with box to get them without box, so maybe some of the costs of the second set are added to the first?)

If you pick up the box set you have the option of adding the decks only, one time only, for Forty clams. If you do, you can snag a couple free gifts as well. Mini red LTD deck for example is one. I don't remember them all, slept since then.

Picked up a boxed set and the $40 set too :) I was a bit taken back by the production run being fairly limited, but at the same time I can appreciate that a lot of work must have gone into these. Probably explains why they were pumping out DM decks so much; their creative team were all busy making these  ;D

On the 52 proof whiskey deck I think there is a spelling error on the bottom of tuck where it says "aged 21 years play wisley" in a circle. should it be "WISELY" ?  Not that my spelling is any better. I just wanted to point it out.  Maybe I'm wrong..

I bought both, the box and the extra pack. Too bad they didn't provide more photos...If the box was nice, like T11 wood engraved boxes, I was thinking to buy another box and an extra pack of 6 decks.

I don't know if is worth it to do another order now (only 5% BC) for another box and an extra pack of 6 just to resell them on ebay Europe or local maybe, just to cut a little from shipping costs which I may say again that are huge (for me). What do you think?

I picked up the box set and the extra 6. Any pictures you want posted specifically? I can take a few and post them here directly.

Ace, kings, pimps, etc... or just spread them on a pad/table to see how it looks. I'm a little afraid that I bought something I have not seen before. My order is still processing...

Thanks a lot! :)

Sorry I mistook what you had asked for lol I haven't open any of the decks. I'm going to keep them sealed. Sorry about that.

Ah, np. Thanks anyway. I hope someone on the huge internet to take some photos of this decks. I am interested in specially for White Wolf. I read that on 2015 this decks will be sold separately. I don't know if will be a 2nd edition or something different about them.

If someone knows a link to a review on youtube or to some photos, please post it. I am interested to make another order, but I don't know, like I said, if the box worth the money.

speedyy400, at least can you take one or more photos to the wood box or the box is sealed too?

I put a couple of pictures up on Imgur. I'm not quite sure how to send you an invitation to see the album so I'm just going to post what is in my address bar and hope it works lol it won't let me upload here because the picture files are too large.

I hope that works.

I ended up uploading one more picture. It's another picture of the clasp that keeps it closed. I think it is probably the coolest yet smallest feature of the whole thing. You have to physically move the locking mechanism out of the way before you can open it up. The picture shows me doing so.

Thank you! I saw the photos of the box.

Just a thought, it seems that the box isn't so special and it doesn't worth the money. One box will be enough for me.

Just got mine... Definitely agree - box is not worth the money in the least... Enjoy the decks though... I particularly like the Absinthe backs...

I agree. In hindsight, I probably could have done without it but oh well. Still a very cool set of decks to add to the collection. Helped me get the Inverted Kings in the process.

From my understanding, they will be for sale individually. They will be V2's and they all will be vertical tucks. The Disparos, and the Absinthe deck will not be horizontal tucks.

I talked myself out of this purchase not so much because of the cards but the cost of the box....basically not enough bang for my buck. I put the decks at $10 each, which I still think is a little high, but I was being generouse. So $120 for the decks (Grabbing the second set to offset the cost a bit), leaving $45 for the box............eh, wasn't feeling it.

But, I did end up with this set im my collection from my son for my Bday which was the day after release.........the box is not worth it, but it seems just a few things could have made it better. I can see they were trying to stick with the "Theme" but something as simple at moving the "Prohibition" branding to the outside would have been better and even some grooves to simulate a crate woulod have helped. it's a nice little set, don't get me wrong, but when your paying for it, it seems a bit off kilter cost wise.

If someone unpacked the White Wolf deck, please post some photos. Mine will arrive in just a few long weeks. Anyway, if someone will make a review will have a lot of views, that's for sure. I guess a lot of people are thinking about paying extra for the box or not. I was thinking to buy another box and extra decks, but...I saw the comments and I change my mind.

I don't understand why is this mysterious thing about this decks...no photos about the cards from this decks on E. It's just a marketing thing to sell the expensive wood box?

It looks like there's photos of all of the Decks' cards on the product page, including the White Wolf Deck (http://www.ellusionist.com/prohibition-6-deck-boxed-set-playing-cards.html). Definitely enough to get an idea of what the rest of the courts and faces look like.

Thanks, Randy
