Playing Card Plethora / Re: Blue LTD from Ellusionist [NEW]
« on: February 10, 2013, 08:54:03 AM »
sorry, when you're hoped up on "new card smell" and a new deck is released, you tend to miss the small stuff. I'm only human.

 :D

yea, it's like being a Christian plummer, or a Christian horticulturalist.

Besides, even Celcus the Philosopher (anti-Christian Greek who lived in the second century) admitted Jesus had some sort of power, " It was by magic that he [Jesus] was able to do the miracles which he appeared to have done. … Christians get the power which they seem to possess by pronouncing the names of certain daemons and incantations."

In fact, Justin Martyr (second century theologian) said some people used to call Jesus a magician.  "Our Christ healed those who from birth were blind and deaf and lame. He cured them by His word, causing them to walk, to hear and to see. By restoring the dead to life, He compelled the men of that day to recognize Him. Yet when they saw these things come to pass, people said it was a display of magic art, for they even dared to say that, Jesus was a magician and a deceiver of the people."

« on: February 09, 2013, 08:17:38 PM »
The blue version of the LTD deck is ready to be shipped. The crispness and buttery finish make these playing cards a joy to pick up and hold.

http://www.ellusionist.com/ltd-blue-playing-cards-deck.html

Plus for the 1st 72 hours, if you buy a brick of blue - you get a red deck!

Peter Rollins is not your typical Christian, his books are titled "The Orthodox Heretic" and "The Idolatry of God" - look him up on youtube, the man is crazy cool.

I think now that the individual boxes are out, I might pick up an extra red, blue and green - and put the sealed ones away.

BTW the "carbon" discount still worked as of Saturday night

Welcome to the Discourse (did you know In the first sense-usage i.e. semantics and discourse analysis, the word "discourse" is studied in corpus linguistics?) It's true....

I can tell that the deck on the left is a reproduction, but I don't think it was a D&D repro.

I think you're right, if memory serves, their repro had each deck wrapped in silver foil? I got my repros (also a black and a green deck) on eBay. Wow Don once again, you are a verifiable cornucopia of information. Can you come over and go through my decks and tell me something about all of them? Ha ha.

uh and let's not forget they released an iphone app this weekend, like em or not - they are taking our hobby into the future, a place quite frankly the rest of the world has been too timid and too reluctant to go to.

I only have Smoke and Mirrors 1 and 2. I missed the boat on all the rest, so when the box set came out  - I thought "here is my chance!" So I shelled out the big bucks. I love these cards actually. My name is "David" so a deck with two D's on it works great for me.

But I think the box wasn't selling like they'd hoped - so now they need to move product and they are piecemealing these decks individually.

Personally, I love the v7 deck

6 decks at 8 bucks a pop is $48 and the box set cost $85, that means the box plus deck 7 together cost $37? Man, I feel ripped off

it's a cool box though.... right? guys? anyone.....?

I was organizing my collection the other day and realized I also have an original ARCO deck, shees - the D & D box looks so spot on, I thought I bought a dupe

1613

Got my 3 from Theory 11 yesterday, the Love deck (for my wife, so I don't get to play with it - review: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qD2CD4KPHOI) I bought the Charity Water deck (review: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUUeFtsHy2g) and the Rebel deck (review: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AuonKReWWh4) . But now that I have the rebels, I am kind feeling buyer remorse, I have no idea why didn't get the Artisans instead? It's a much cooler deck. Ah well.

I noticed that the Legends decks were sold out, so I quickly snagged a single deck off ebay (review: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahvD6FiWyRo)

and a deck of White Lions while I was at it, to add to my Blaine collection.

Peter Rollins (http://peterrollins.net/) is an Irish writer, lecturer, theologian, and philosopher who is associated with the emerging church movement and postmodern Christianity. Peter has been feverishly assembling a Christian faith confrence titled "The Idolatry of God" (http://idolatryofgod.eventbrite.com/) and you'd expect the typical line up of speakers and guest stars.

Well, today he announced one of his workshops will be hosted by Caolan McBride (http://www.caolanmcbride.com). Peter says two of the BIG themes this year at his confernece will be Magic and Decay so it seemed only natural to have a magician as one of his speakers.

Pretty cool

Playing Card Plethora / Re: White Lions vs Split Spades

Split Spades (the first two sets) were, respectively, Tally Ho and Bee stock.
It's been theorized that the Split Spades Lions is made of 325gsm Bicycle stock (no longer in use).
The White Lions have a slightly softer/thicker feel to them, akin to the Aristocrat reprints.

That's the info I was looking for, I did do a keyword search earlier, but the site (at least for me) is still rather hard to navigate.

I'm always fine, if you'd rather PM me a thread that would help - and you could just delete my initial inquiry. My feelings won't be hurt.

Thanks again everyone - great help!

It's why I've basically stopped buying magic until I get through what I have.

Hi, my name is David and I am an addict.

 :D

I'm so glad someone else in the world shares my dilemma. Yea, I am not buying any more either. But thank you so much for your recommendations. I picked up the Card Tricks Encyclopedia and have been reading it by my bedside. It's kind of like my "go to " book when I feel I need to start over from scratch.

Thank you so much Don, you have been an amazing help and comfort.

Playing Card Plethora / White Lions vs Split Spades
« on: February 06, 2013, 12:02:23 PM »
I have 2 of the original split spades "David Blaine" decks. (why did I put that in quotes?) And I have the 3 split spade "trick" decks that he released. Plus I have the deck that followed - the "MMVIII" split spade that had a "white lion" in the graphic - but apparently those ARE NOT the white lion deck (it's so confusing)

THEN - DB and D. Stutzman released a "true" White Lion deck - and many of you recommend it as a premiere deck and one worth picking up. And since I recognize the wisdom of this board and the valuable information you all have, I'd like to know - "in your opinion" what makes the newly released White Lion deck - better than the previous split spades predecessors?

Thank you in advance,

1618
ha ha, well that's the thing....I guess my biggest problem is in my massive collection. In my younger feeverish days, I amassed a canon of videos and books, skimmed em for a few good tricks and then went on to the next big thing. I have been doing that since I started, always feeling the effect of "not having the best" and wanting more. I am such a victim of advertising.

Now, at 44, I turn and look back at this HUGE pile and think. There is several lifetimes of magic in there. I don't need to go forward, I need to go back. So I am just now beginning to take it all in and ask that EXACT question. WHERE?

The truth is, I don't refer back to any of them. I buy and I move forward....it's a ridiculous thing. More than the latest trick, I need direction, I need a map, you know?

1619
I posted my cards, so let's post my library. I said somewhere else on this board, I would give you the scope of what I am working with. And right off, let me say that I don't post this to impress you, I post this to show you what an addiction can do, and how overwhelming it is for me to find direction.

First off, thank you so much for your answers. This site is so helpful and the people here so friendly, it's been great!

I guess my biggest problem is in my massive collection. In my younger feeverish days, I amassed a canon of videos and books, skimmed em for a few good tricks and then went on to the next big thing. I have been doing that since I started, always feeling the effect of "not having the best" and wanting more. I am such a victim of advertising. (*)

Now, at 44, I turn and look back at this HUGE pile and think. There is several lifetimes of magic in there. I don't need to go forward, I need to go back. In every other part of my life, I have had a teacher, a mentor, but in magic... it's very solitary and you end up learning magic from the internet, which... like has been said earlier... has no rules.

I kind of like rules. Especially when I learn. I value someone smarter and wiser than me telling me where to go. After all, I don't know much - even after having done magic for 20 years. I can still say, "Yea, I'm a noob." (ha ha)

* Just to give you an idea, I'm going to post my library in my introduction thread
