Reminds me of Buddhist sand paintings.  Beautiful artwork, only meant to last a short time.  Not easy to make that kind of work on an Etch-a-Sketch.

I'm more impressed by the fact that this was done without a single mistake, there's not partial eraser on an Etch-a-sketch.

Yeah mandalas are pretty awesome!! I've actually tried making them before, it's pretty fun.

People say nothing's impossible, but I do nothing everyday.

Today I found something that reminded me of you. But don't worry I flushed and everything went back to normal.

It would suck if there was an earthquake when that happened.

It is possible to preserve work of this nature.  Dismantle the device, pour out the excess metallic particles, use a fixative like hair spray or clear spray glue on the back of the screen to hold the existing particles in place, then reseal the device with the knobs disabled.

Not earthquake-proof, but certainly earthquake-resistant...

I highly doubt that. Firstly I think that this art is kind of intended to be there once and gone the next. Secondly taking apart the device would cause a great deal of shaking. Although there are people who can do crazy surgeries and insane art pieces that require such great precision that I'm sure it is possible some how.

It's not as hard as you would think.  Place the Etch-A-Sketch on a workbench with clamps, unscrew the bottom, and you're done.  No rough handling required.  Screws on too tight?  No worries - as long as you remember to loosen them BEFORE starting your masterpiece.  Disabling the device is easily done by pulling back the drawing tip so it no longer touches the screen - and you can do that AFTER you've sprayed the back of the screen to fix the artwork in place.  I've seen the inside of an Etch-A-Sketch, they're not complicated at all.  No high-precision tools, no laser-guided anything necessary...

Yeah I'm not in the dark on how they work. Here is a picture of one taken apart. I don't think it's as easy as you make it out to be though.

Here's in article about how they work http://entertainment.howstuffworks.com/etch-a-sketch-pictures5.htm

and here is a picture

One could probably find a way to accomplish it, but it would take a great deal of trial and error to figure that out.

I've seen people open them before; it's not that hard, especially if you're using a full-sized model.  Bear in mind that in the '70s, there were probably fewer consumer safeguards in place so they may have been easier to open.  But still, I don't imagine for a minute that it would take a great deal of effort to open a modern, full-sized model.  If the goal was to preserve a piece of art on the glass, the simplest method to make it simpler would be to drill a few holes and drain out the aluminum dust.

On a side note, I'm at work.  There are video monitors at my desk showing camera feeds.  There's a roach trapped in one of the camera housings.  Seeing a blurry, huge image of a roach as it walks over the lens is a little unsettling...but also kind of funny.

There's no words to describe how awesome that is. I just keep looking at it, imagining how long it must have took and how much talent the artist has  :D
