Just found these online. I'm pretty sure this is a new deck. Each card has its own individual art.

Notice the stripper on the spade. I smiled when I saw it. ::)
I'm not too impressed, and $20 for a deck is kind of ridiculous. Besides, most of the cards are random photos, and there seems to be literally no theme for the deck as a whole, other than all being from the same photograph. Looks more like a portfolio than a deck of cards.
I do like the box, though. Just wouldn't buy it.

Yeah it has Tom's artwork on each card. I like it for an art deck. That is the reason I got into collect because I loved the art (and the history) behind the cards. I see each card as an art piece and in this deck that is exactly the case. It is a little more expensive because it is a small run by a small artist. They gotta make money somehow haha  ;)

and I do love the box!

I also love to see each card as a peice of art, but transposing independent art onto the card itself is kind of overlooking the fact that it is, in fact, playing cards. Transformation decks, for example, usually incorporate the cards elements IN the design. In this case, it's almost literally an art book printed on cards rather than actual pages. Not to mention the standard rider backs.

I would buy one if I had a particular interest in the artist's work. If for example there was a deck printed with Tim Burton's art on it(Which I think there is, actually), I'd be more likely to buy it because I like Tim Burton's work, but others might not be interested because it would have more in common with an art book than a deck of cards.

Then again, I'm not that hardcore of a collector. If I was, chances are I'd buy it anyway, for the sake of my collection being complete.

1- $20.00

2-
"Manufactured by Make-a-Deck in Salem, NH"

Thanks , but no thanks.

Also , they have copied the Bicycle Rider Back design? if that is true they may have problems with USPC.

Wow, I didn't see that. If it's not manufactured by the USPCC, having a rider back on it is indeed very likely to cause problems, and not a very fair thing to do to begin with. ::)

I'm pretty sure third parties can use the USPCC rider back blank face cards to make decks for customers. I may be wrong but I've seen it on sites before. I'm sure there is some sort of deal they can work out with USPCC.

I understand this isn't a magic deck or aimed at people like @dancards. I really only posted this for those in the card collecting community that like the art side of it. I'm sure the handling and performance are god awful but the art is incredible.

I didn't mean anything against you.
We all thanks to you that you tell us information about decks.
I just said that I don't like the deck. No offense to you at all.
And please keep posting for us :)

  • Pick a card, any card...no, not THAT card!

  • Facebook:
My guess would be that the artist took a standard Rider Back pack, removed the original art and replaced it with his own.  It's more art piece than playing cards.  In that sense, it's worth the price.

Did you see some of his other pieces?  Very cool, but in select cases VERY expensive.

And each card has an ugly, annoying caption.
This is just not appealing at all! And its $20!

The page clearly states "Manufactured by Make-a-Deck in Salem, NH.", which suggests a manufacturer specialized in lower quality promotional/gift decks, and therefore not a deck printed by USPC. Unless they have permission, I would think using rider backs on such as deck would create some copyright issues.

Thanks brown_baggs for the information. I love the design and concept of the deck.

Sabacc is right. It's obvious that this is not a typical playing card deck, the artist has reproduced his previous drawings as well as photos of his installations on the playing cards. And you should view this deck as a "catalog" of the artist's work in the form of a playing card deck.

The so-called "captions" are the titles of his art pieces. In a compilation of artworks, it is common to have the titles stated for the art pieces. The names of the art pieces do sometimes add to the message or emotion the artist is trying to convey. The sizes are stated as well since majority of his artwork are installations so you need to have the dimensions to understand the scope of his work.

Therefore if you view this as a limited edition artist's catalog instead as a typical playing card deck, you may appreciate it better.

I'm telling you, it seriously looks like the cards and box were "erased" - add the right chemical and you can remove the ink on a card.  The corner indices are all legit Bicycle-style, and I'm told they're all Rider Back.  That "Make-A-Deck, Inc." sounds more like an inside joke describing his staff of assistants.  It would not surprise me in the least to learn they're handmade.

Either that, or he went to those websites the teach you how to produce your own professional-looking decks at home.
