Playing Card Plethora / Re: Whether to open decks or not
« on: September 15, 2013, 09:43:29 AM »
Being a relatively new Deck collector, at the moment I'm subscribing to the 2 deck theory...one to open and one to save. I entirely agree that the beauty and fun of decks is to open them, feel them in your hand. I've realized this even more as I make my way through threads and reviews, when I see you guys take these fantastic back designs and fan them out it just shows how well thought out some of these decks are.

As for investment...I think Froggo said it best, there are better more stable things to invest in. That being said, Don's Superman analogy is spot on...you just never know. Over the last week my want list has grown, but has also had deletions to it because I'm realizing what is a true custom deck and what is a more mass-market, readily available deck.

The biggest plus for me right now, this may change as time goes by, is that I'm finding most decks relatively affordable, making the 2 pack system an easier sell. But there are those decks that I've heard mentioned that are already in that "High Demand" category that IF I end up having the opportunity to own, will probably stay sealed until a second deck can be had. I still think the best advice is to get what appeals to you and not just what everyone else is buying, it may very well be one and the same, just don't base your choice on that alone.

In the end, as it's been said over and over, it's really up to you and what your intention and reasons for collecting boil down to. Collector, Cardist, Magician, etc... each offers a new wrinkle into that choice.

Ahhh, if we all had money to burn  ;)

Design & Development / Re: Foto Grafis - New deck in the works!
« on: September 14, 2013, 11:00:46 AM »
Beautiful deck PM, just the type of set that got me into this mess, lol. Can't wait to see it on KS!

In reply to Don, "Foto" is a shortened/slang version of "Fotgrafia" which is the Italian word for Photograph, much like we use the word Photo in English instead of the full Photograph, I have seen the following stated in photography books  "Photography comes from the two latin words foto – which means light and grafis which means control"

...and to add to the confusion, lol
" Many words in the English language come to us from Latin or Ancient Greek. "Photo" is derived from Greek - the Greek word "phos" means "light." The word "graph" also comes from a Greek word meaning "to draw." A Photograph is therefore a drawing made with light. We often shortern the word "photograph" to "photo." The latin word for "light" is "lux."

Interesting mystery to say the least, but in no means does that take away from anything I've seen.

Just an update, changed the card layout a bit and if you click on one of the 1st 3 decks you will get a details page. Currently with a stock photo, I'm thinking of taking my own photos of the decks laid out and maybe some scans of key cards.

Thanks again for your input and comments.

The Conversation Parlor / Re: Playing Card Collection Displays (?)

That is an awesome display Sparkz, I'll have to look into finding those frames with the hinged glass cover. That is originally what I was looking for when built my displays but I couldn't find any at the time so I'll have to look again. I really like the idea of using pvc for the shelves.

Thanks Curt, they work out well and the PVC is easy to work with. This was the smallest one they had 11x14, ran like $12....they do have 20x24 (Poster Size) also.

I see what your saying Don...I'll crack open a deck and see what i can come up with. That being said, what would be the most important things to show in a pic of an open deck? I would assume anything that makes a deck unique? I saw what you meant on the wiki site, just wondering what "keys" of a deck to show.

Thanks for the input

Very nice displays, shadow boxes do seem to work real well. My display project is still in the works, I have a 5' x 6' space of bare wall next to my desk reserved for it. Originally planned for my Zippo collection, now I'm trying to design something to display both my lighters and decks.

I made a very small lighter display early on using a hinged frame from Micheal's, again very inexpensive with their sales and coupons. I also used a piece of PVC 1/4 round for the "Shelves", a couple bucks at your local hardware store and spray painted black. The thickness of a deck is very close to that of a lighter so this should work well. I'm sorry that the pic has lighters in the display rather than decks, but I got my 1st 2 decks yesterday, lol

Very simple, just thought I would share for anyone looking for ideas.

...to be continued.

That,s so funny, that was my very 1st Zippo, got it from a friend because he thought i would like the design....the rest, as they say, is history, lol

Thanks for poking around!

Ya selling would be a completely different scenario Don i agree, i'm not much of a seller and on the occasional time i do have something to sell i just go the ebay route for now. This is more of a personal site.

So I've been a Zippo collector for some time, I have a site dedicated to that collection and just recently updated it to be able to add the Decks I pick up. I'm debating on how to present the decks, so I was wondering if I could get some opinions from Discourse members.

If you could visit http://www.sparkzcollector.com and hover over the "Playing Card" nav button you'll see "Bicycle", please click to enter the page. It is currently password protected (Password: DECK )

On the page there are 3 samplings of what I've come up with so far for displaying the decks on the site. If I could get some feedback it would be great, if you have a suggestion, that's cool, if you hate them all and the site....no worries, lol

Thanks in advance,
Tony

Well I really do appreciate the information, I know having noobs around is sometimes a pain and a chore and I'm sure it gets tiresome when the same questions are asked over and over again, so I have made the search function my new best friend and only ask if I run out of resources.

For me though it's still a learning thing, I always like to learn as much as I can about what I collect, or else it just "Buying" not really collecting, lol

Thanks again, everyone has been great!

Fantastic information Don, thanks so much for taking the time to post it. I have been working my whay through the review section just to get a better feel of whats expected out of a deck and what to look for. Not to mention it's helping me understand the "Lingo" a bit better..........PIP, who knew, lol

Thanks again, Tony

Thanks John, I was planning on buying decks in sets...one to open one to save, can't get away from the collectors brainwashing MIB!! ??? I would have to agree though, it would kill me not to open decks and appreciate them. Much like Zippo's, there is something about holding a deck of cards in your hands and in the short time I've been here the Cardestry I've been watching is just amazing! I may have to find some tutorials see if I can teach this old dog some new tricks, lol

Thanks again, T

Playing Card Plethora / Re: cost of cards and shipping
« on: September 12, 2013, 06:50:19 AM »
i would have to look at the seller and opt for the seller offering the lower shipping cost just on principle...meaning, 9 times out of 10 those charging less for the product but "Hiding' some profit in the shipping costs seem to be trying to deceive you. That being said, I tend to be a loyal buyer, if I find a seller who is being straight forward and I can communicate with, I'll be willing to pay a little more because their making the effort.

Of course you need to make sure the variables are all the same from each seller, location, shipping method, etc...

Great suggestions and recommendations in this thread, I am glad I did get some of my noob collecting mistakes out of the way with my other collection. I would like to add a question, while 1st and foremost I've always been a collector who buys what appeals to ME, playing cards, in what I've read fall into a "quality" issue. While I'm basing my choices mostly on visual appeal at this point, I would like to purchase decks of quality. Is there some rule of thumb concerning the actual card stock and process itself? Or am I better off seeing for myself and just sticking to reputable sources?

I was reading something about Bicycle "Standard" packs as opposed to Rider Backs, this is all new to me so I was trying to make some sense of what made one inferior besides the comments "There crap", lol

Thanks in advance!

Introduce Yourself / Good Morning Discourse

My name is Anthony and I'm an avid Zippo collector...I know, this is a playing card forum. I'm from Huntley Illinois which is just about an hour west of Chicago. How a Zippo brought me here....My passion for Zippo's came from the art and creativity found in them, I have a graphics and art background and just found them fascinating. Recently a friend sent me a Zippo and along with it a pack of Bicycle playing cards with images and art by Anne Stokes, one of my favorite fantasy artists. Needless to say, I was hooked. I flashed back to my early Zippo days when a lighter was a lighter and until just recently, a deck of cards was a deck of cards. I've been poking around here and there looking for some education into my new found hobby and came across your site.

I'm one of those collectors who just loves digging deep into information so I hope I don't make anyone crazy with "Noob" questions, it's always nice to discuss your passion with others like yourself so I'm hoping to get to know you current members a little better over time.

Not so strangely, looking into information on Playing Cards brought me to a lot of information on Magic, I'm a big fan, always have been. While grand illusion is quite amazing, I've always loved slight of hand and  card tricks much more. Something about the "Up close and personal" is just amazing.

Anyway, that's a little about myself, looking forward to participating on the site!
