This deck was mentioned on Expose today and here is a picture of the seal.

Also here is some info:

"Here's to the crazy ones, the misfits, the #rebels."

This morning in Exposé, we unveiled the sticker seal of our newest playing cards: REBELS. The deck was designed in collaboration with StudioNumberONE, a world renowned studio located in the heart of Los Angeles founded by Shepard Fairey. Shepard Fairey is one of the most iconic street artists of our generation, and we are honored and privileged to work with his studio.

Download this (free) iPhone wallpaper of the Rebel Playing Card seal, and join us in excitement for our newest playing card project. Get ready to Rebel!

Love Shepard Fairey... One of my favorite new school artists... Have some hardcover books of his as well as an Obey Bill from one of his exhibitions... He is awesome... I'm balls to the wall excited for this deck (if Fairey designed it then excited for a brick)... Now this is the good $#!T People... This is why I enjoy collecting... If Fairey designed the deck it will no doubt be sick as hell... "Just when I thought I was out - They pull me back in..."

Edit: Release Date Anyone???

I personally don't like the seal. However I like this artist/studio very much, and it seems like this will be 100% custom (fingers crossed). Yay!

Nathan, it's been bothering me for a while, but why are 80% of your comments about some deck being "100% custom"? Is that the only thing you look at in a deck? Decks can look good without being 100% custom OR look bad despite being 100% custom. At least try to say something else from time to time.

We've been hating on T11 for putting too much emphasis on the tuckbox rather than the cards, and now we get a seal as a "teaser"? Ridiculous.
That being said, it's not designed by them directly, so I'll still be waiting to see what it looks like. ::)
Grin like a Cheshire cat, and remember: we're all mad here.

I know that Theory11 usually has great quality and boxes. However I find their main weakness to be that the cards inside are disappointing. By being 100% custom, the chances of this happening are reduced. Most fully custom decks nowadays are great hits amongst our community.

Whether you like it or not I agree with you Moon... In addition I might add that you make no sense Nathan... I do not believe you are a fan of Shepard Fairey, whom I am quite sure you know nothing of his work other than having googled him after reading this post, you'd know that the seal is 100% representative of his style of work.  For you to like the work, but not the seal is contradictory... Is your mom and dad going to allow you to buy this deck?  Or do you have to wait and see if it's 100% Custom...

It's inevitable so let me cut you off at the pass... @Don... Yes, we know... "Opinions are like..." However, I have mine and it is just so frustrating for someone that posts with such conviction to not have any real basis for their opinion...

He's one of the most influential street artists living today with work in the Smithsonian and the Museum of Modern Art in NY... He designed the Hope Poster for Obama, but Nathan has to see if it's 100% custom before he can give it his stamp of approval because he's not crazy about the seal... give me a f'ing break...

Actually, JM, I'm with you on this one.  But frankly, it's silly to debate the merits of any deck based on the bleedin' sticker used to hold the tuck box closed!  Show me the cards!!  Fairey may have designed the sticker, may have designed the tuck box, but the last time I checked, I'm not dealing either one at my poker table - I deal the cards.

I honestly can't think of more than a really small number of occasions where the bleedin' sticker was in any way representative of what the actual cards even looked like!  Arcane, Vortex - yes; Monarchs - perhaps, though it's pushing it; everything else - not even close.  The most I can glean from that sticker is that they're looking to make a classic deck design.  Meaning they're doing what half the designers out there are doing today.  Woo AND hoo.

Hopefully this is not a limited edition. There is no way we can out F5 the Obey fans and punters if this is a limited drop.

I have learned over time that T11 has had exactly two real, honest-to-gods limited releases: the White Centurions and the Gold Monarchs.  You can buy Propagandas and Black Stingers today that were made in Erlanger long after the initial printing sold out, despite the fact that T11 doesn't carry them on their own site.  It wouldn't phase me in the least to learn ALL of their other decks are still being printed and sold.  The closest there is to an exception is that any deck that had a version-two release is still only available in the current version - but since every v-2 they've done was just a new BOX, it doesn't really matter, does it?  :))

People collect for many reasons. Some to have them all, others vintage only and others because it's a sickness  ???

I'm still a newbie collector. But as a collector I'd rather buy limited editions, rare and/or hard to find decks. I'm not all that interested in collecting a deck everyone can buy. However, I would still buy a deck that I find visually appealing, just to have one.

Having said that, if T11 wants to print 5000 or 50000 decks that should be up to them. My guess is they are printing cards to make a profit, so why limit production when they can sell more. Unless of course they claim it to be "limited".

As previously mentioned, T11 doesn't really do limited decks. I would not mind if this one is limited because it contains the designs of a very reputable artist. However, in an age of "limited" decks, it is kind of refreshing to have a site I can go to to order normally stocked decks. E kinda falls into this category as well. Either way, I am good to pick up a few.

To each his own, to be sure!  Welcome aboard the Good Ship Discourse.

I don't mind limited or unlimited.  But be upfront about it, at least.  I paid a more expensive price for my Black Stingers because they were "sold out", or so I thought, until I discovered that I got a reprinting and that new printings are still cropping up.  It's as if USPC was "sold out" of Bicycle Rider Backs, but you could still get them somewhere else at a higher price months after they were supposedly sold out because unbeknownst to you they're still being made - they're just not being sold by USPC.

Actually, E is in a better category.  They deal with their customers straight, saying "This is a rare 5000-print run," "This is regular inventory; buy it up and we'll print more" and "We're closing out this product, get it while it lasts."  T11 is more like "This product is sold out, has been for months - but we're still making it and you can be tricked into thinking it's a rare item and paying more for it long after we stopped carrying it on our website."

Limited decks should be a limited thing - something done once in a while, not as a rule of thumb.  When everything's limited, it dilutes the meaning of what a limited edition deck really is.  If a few things are limited, they have cachet; when everything's limited, it's just plain annoying.

my guess is that this deck is going to look much like the americana deck. hopefully not though. however, i guarantee that when its about to release they say it will be the best deck ever and will revolutionize the way we look at playing cards...0_o

True enough!  But I think it'll be more like a reprint of a classic that never existed in the first place than a grunged-up custom.  Again, this is based solely on a deck seal - which is like buying a car based on what the cigarette lighter looks like.  Not even the hood ornament, just the cigarette lighter...  "Oooh, that's a sweet-looking cigarette lighter!  It only costs $25,000, and it comes with a CAR to carry it in, no less!"

Lol Gun. I hope there will not be any American flag imagery, that would turn me off from this deck.

I wouldn't hold my breath on that happening.  We're talking "Americana", not "America the Beautiful" or (shudder) the "Red, White and Blue Series" from Merz67...  The Rebel deck could just as easily be based on "Star Wars" as it could on America!  Imagine a Darth Vader Ace of Spades...  :))

I can really only crack jokes about a deck design whose only clue we have is the seal.  I might as well take a bunch of supermodels, throw burqas on them and show you pictures of the hem to promote the new swimsuit calendar I'm making.

alot of hatred toward t11 on here... any reasons?

It's more of a love-hate thing for some - and a hate-hate thing for others!

They promote reasonably nice products as better than the second coming of Jesus, insuring universal disappointment; they still reprint and sell supposedly sold-out decks; and with the exception of the Sentinels, every deck they make is minimally customized (backs, Ace of Spades and Jokers, maybe some custom coloring on bog-standard court cards).  This was fine when custom decks were still rarities in the market, but now everyone's making new decks and they're not keeping up in the innovation department.

Opinions are similar about Dan and Dave because not only are they in a similar creativity rut, but they sell overpriced products having little to nothing to do with cards at times, like nail clippers and lip balm.

Ellusionist is more generally liked because not only did they kick off this age of custom deck design, but they're not asleep at the switch when they work on a new deck, choosing instead to take bold, new directions rather than follow in the well-worn path of the rest of the industry.

Good little summary?  Did you want more?  :))

t11 was also beyond rude to some of the members from this forum when they went to the t11 forum and started to talk about the vortex deck. idk why but they seemed "pick" on the people that were talking about the vortex but then would let other decks be talked about.

some of their mods were very rude to me personally on several different occasions, so i've stopped using that forum outright.

Anyway, I'm curious to see what this will look like.

If they are going to use the "THINK DIFFERENT" campaign as their base of this deck, then I hope it would be something out of the norm. ^-^

I think the same concept was used for an ad campaign for Lee jeans or Levi's or something maybe a year ago.

I question T11's capacity to "think different", frankly!  :))

I LoLed at that. Ahahahah!!!!
Although I have to admit I only found out quite recently from what I've read on T11's Designs. :P I guess you can call me a card ignorate. LoL. but yeah, it was the  Advertising Agency that Steve Jobs hired back then who came up with the "THINK DIFFERENT" campaign. :P yeah... I'm a AppleFanatic

The original long version appeared on posters made by Apple.

The Crazy Ones
Original

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes.
The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them.
About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They invent. They imagine. They heal. They explore. They create. They inspire. They push the human race forward.
Maybe they have to be crazy.
How else can you stare at an empty canvas and see a work of art? Or sit in silence and hear a song that’s never been written? Or gaze at a red planet and see a laboratory on wheels?
We make tools for these kinds of people.
While some see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”

When I heard who was designing the deck it immediately got my attention, I'm quite excited to see how it turns out after seeing some of his previous work.  :)

That whole "they didn't have rights to my art" thing could put a real damper on this deck, though.

EDIT: another whoops for me today - got this confused with the Spar deck made for Lu Chen; it has Si Scott art, but not fully authorized by him yet because he was hospitalized before the deck was completed.

This deck I'm also looking forward to seeing.  I'm not an uber-fan of Fairey but I do like his art.

I just had six raw oysters for lunch. They were very good but I cut my hand opening them and I wonder if they are worth the effort. It is interesting seeing t11 comming out with a new deck. I like their products but then again I do not seem to dislike any playing card company although I have noticed kickstarter is annoying me with saturation. Once it becomes more profit driven than art driven I think it starts to recede. I would imagine these decks will be limited. Even though we all bitch about them it seems to be what collectors desire. This is supported when one sees how fast many of these sell out along with the price increase on Ebay. I will be keeping an eye out for the release date and I will be one of the numerous idiotssitting in front of my computer waiting for the exact moment they come up. As St. Augustine said, "without vice, there would be no virtue."

T11 sure are into that very heavy, stark and simple design these days. The Ace looks nice, has some fun little details in there. I'll be REALLY curious if they actually go full custom on this one, because if the whole premise of the deck is to be all rebellious and they end up with the same court and pips in use for the last 100+ years, that would be uber lame.

I like the ace, but it isn't my favorite. I think T11 needs to go a little more crazy on an ace and make a more detailed one. Although it is nice.

A few images by Fairey... I was lucky enough to purchase an original bill by Fairey as shown in the first pic... His attention to detail goes above and beyond... I hope he doesn't disappoint... A deck seems to be right up his alley, given his style...

I don't think too many people will agree... not many people here liked the Monarchs.

@Joker & the Thief... Thank you... The Monarchs are awesome... I don't know of a nicer box available anywhere... The backs are original and cool, and the colors on the fronts of the decks are fresh... The Jokers are reminiscent of the Original Bicycle Joker, and the Ace of Spades is elegant... To all y'all - Go buy some NOC decks and stop Hatin' on the Monarch deck... Hahaha!!! P.S. If the problem is that you're upset you don't have a Gold Edition Monarch, PM me a substantial offer and maybe I'll let one of mine go...

I like them as well.  The issue was less about the cards and more about the massive hype leading up to their release.  It was being promoted as if it was the second coming of Jesus, and in the end the cards were nice and in no way lived up to the hype machine behind them.  Honestly, nothing could.  People were all excited about the cards and the gold that was supposed to be on the backs of them, and the final release was altered and had no gold ink on the backs.  They had an awesome box - there's no denying that T11 makes great tuck boxes - but the cards themselves didn't knock a lot of people's socks off, especially after the letdown about the gold ink on the backs.

@Don... Anyone can get a Gold Edition... Get some money up and grab one... $100+ for a 111 deck Run or the same $ for a S&M - what? 5K run?  That's what makes this world great... Choices... Gold Monarch or three of each color of the NOC deck... I'll take the Gold Monarch Thank You... And alright, I'll cool it with the NOC... I think you get my point... In actuality I was just a bit let down after all the  hype... Talk about a hype monster...

Not anyone can get them - only 111 people maximum can at any given time!

I didn't think they overhyped the NOC deck - compared to Monarchs, they scribbled an ad on the bathroom wall in Mars Bar downtown (a bar that epitomizes "dive bars").

But we're getting off-topic here.  Rebel deck...  Only saw the seal for the box...  Not much to talk about, then, is there?  :))

Oh, yeah - nearly forgot about it.  I do like it, but it's mighty hard to evaluate it when it looks like the picture was taken from somewhere under the kitchen sink or in the back of a closet, without any flash.  It hearkens back to some of the more classic AoS designs.

So...  A deck seal AND the center of the AoS...  Still not a lot to go on.

This whole hype build-up with peeks here are there are getting tiresome.  Just show the blasted cards, or show nothing until the release.

@Don... Agreed... At least they're not tweeting like with the Chinatown Fultons, which by the way have a new seal... The seal has two chopsticks printed on it and the deck's only selling for $40 with the new seal... How many are you going to pick up?

Exactly zero.  I didn't like the deck much without a seal, so I doubt the seal will make the cards any better.

Them Buck brothers sure do like makin' bucks...I'd wager is someone offered up a stool sample from either of them, someone would be willing to pay big bucks for it.  :))

REBELS UPDATE!

Info from theory11's fb page

The cards should be coming off the press later this week.
And the cards feature a custom box (no surprises there, am I right?  ;)) custom ace, custom jokers, back design, and seal (not only in design but in shape). although the courts, They weren't mentioned. Hmm interesting. It'd be strange to see shepard leave any of this deck untouched. Anyhow, I'm excited. What do you guys think?

I'd be surprised if there weren't any customization on the court cards and faces. It seems like this deck is taking a while to be designed so it'll probably end up being very detailed.

Since they didn't mention it having custom pips or court cards, I'm assuming those will be standard. I mean seriously... theory11 hasn't had a fully custom deck since JAQK or Sentinels.

...and the JAQK deck wasn't even their original design!  :))

I'm forced to say that this will likely be a standard court/pip set with different colors.  T11 sticks to that more often than not.

They also said their will be something new in something old (something weird like that), which leads me to believe that Propaganda v2 will be released, but only time will tell.

So, here's the breakdown for Friday:

1. White Monarchs
2. White Monarchs (Uncut Sheet) - Possibly
3. Theory11 Rebels
4. New Trick by, I believe, Calen Morelli?

This is what I think is going to transpire so far. I hope there just isn't more. Only time will tell.

Maybe Genesis v3 by Andrei or a Jason England release? And White Monarch uncuts are for sure they said.

I don't think the uncuts count as one of the releases.

just to be a tad more accurate we have:

1.white monarch

2.white monarch uncut sheet

3.rapture by Edward Boswell

4.a mentalism effect called insane by Andy Nyman

5. And possibly the rebel deck.

So that leaves one item unaccounted for assuming that they are counting the white monarchs and uncut sheets as new releases

JB says Rebels won't be among the releases:

This is what was in that post from Bayme:

Just to prevent any false hope, the mystery releases are neither of those - yet. ;) This is a set of something that we have never mentioned - and it hasn't existed to my knowledge in over a century.

"Over a century"?  What, the wax cylinder video console?  Talk about being cryptic...

I'm guessing these will be coming as soon as T11 are done processing the orders from Friday's release.

I'll guess "2012 or 2013".  If I'm right, do I win a prize?  :))  I could simply guess "first half of the 21st century", but that sounds a bit vague...or maybe "at some future point on the Gregorian calendar..."  :))

Is your guess educated or just a shot in the dark?  By "educated", I'm asking if you have any actual confirmation from T11 or one of its employees?  Because if it's not educated, then your guess is exactly as good as mine...

I actually posted that for a reason. It's because on Facebook, Official Bicycle Cards posted a picture and some info about a deck of cards in collaboration with T11, and thinking it was the Rebels deck, I posted it here. But when they said that they were two different decks, I edited my post, since it's impossible for me to erase it. Hope this makes sense.

Oh, I see.  You didn't "think" it was the Rebels, you assumed it was the Rebels...

Bloody hell...  They're claiming a "Monarch" situation all over again!  Their credibility just dropped several notches in my book.  "Oh, yeah, we made this huge print run, but it wasn't exactly what we wanted so we trashed/recycled it so that's why it's taking so long..."

BULLSHIT.

I translate that to read "We needed an excuse for coming out with the deck so late after we've been hyping it, so we cooked up a cock-and-bull story about a lousy print run - as if we've NEVER done that before..."

I generally like T11 decks, but they gotta stop with the lameass excuses that don't even rise to the level of "My dog ate my homework..."  Just put the friggin' hype machine in neutral and git 'er done already!  You wanna impress me, don't use fancy hype campaigns - just show me a friggin' DECK!

I believe it is "limited"/ "rare"
And they will only be releasing 55 on Friday
5 (for their 5year anniversary) x 11 ( for theory 11)= 55
They said they will release more at later date so that these won't be considered a badge of honor.
Don't worry they promised that they have boosted their network for this

Actually I made all of that up

"This Friday at 11:00am EDT. Together, we begin to Rebel." - Their Wordplay is hilarious.

I'm loving the Ace though. However, it seems too similar to that of the Monarchs.

I think its a pretty nice ace. And a BIG one too. Will have to see what the backs and other aspects turn out to be to be convinced to buy this deck.

I hate to say it, but I think this is looking too much like the original over-hyped Monarch release. Based on that Ace, I'd say they're sticking with standard pips and likely standard faces. I really wish they'd follow the Sentinel path and go custom. Then again, I could be completely wrong. We'll have to wait an see.

The box looks really nice. With T11 though, my main concern is the cards. I'd love to see a little customization on those court cards beyond just basic color changes. With such a high profile artist doing the work, I'd hope they gave him some room to do something custom. The T11 pattern doesn't really do that anymore...

As jmrock said, it would also be nice if they just release the deck and don't make any crazy shenanigans.

Wow! Was not expecting much from this deck but it's actually looking pretty awesome! I agree with the whole custom courts deal, but I personally like just barely customized courts, keeps the feel of the deck familiar to spectators especially when performing magic. Looks like I'll be spending some more cash this month.....

  • Card for me maybe?
For some reason I'm hoping this'll look like the monarchs, love the cards and the box (Not the campaign and other stuff) Wonder how the court cards and pips will turn out, a simple re-colouring or something innovative and new (Hopefully for the better but I doubt this quite much)

That sucks. I'm getting sick of going to their site, trying to view a deck and instead getting 10 pictures of the deck's box (browse for their silver steampunks, as an example). My guess is they'll do something similar here to attempt shy from the fact the faces look just like half of their other decks.

just signed in, found one White monarchs in my cart !

add one rebels, one silver monarchs, one standard monarchs, one stingers, one charity water ~37$ without shipping but my total was 75$ (and with shipping 93$) !!! i send them a message, then try to add a coupon to add a deck one or  a sentinels that i didnt have and ...

504 Gateway Time-out  ....

edit: they already answer me

"This (price problem) is probably caused by the White Monarch in your cart. That is a glitch. Remove the White Monarch and everything else in your cart and try again. That should fix things for you."

Guys, if you are disappointed with the "yet again" standard faces, here's a tip.

VOTE WITH YOUR MONEY and don't buy them. That's the only thing that will work. Personally I'm really disappointed that they give these to a world-famous artist and they can't do anything even slightly different. Sheesh. I know that people "are used to" the standard faces and all that but come on, you are telling me that you can't even take the border off, or maybe redraw a face, or maybe change the costuming?

Lazy. They don't even bother to put a picture of the faces on the website.

I'm in a love-hate relationship with these decks. The backs are absolutely immaculate, as wel as the box an the tax-stamped seal. Although the faces are just recolored, and the pipa are normal, I feel the pro's absolutely outweigh the con's in this deck. Is it as good ad they made it out to be? Absolutely not. Are the backs and box gorgeous and does it make up for the lack of customization? Well that's just a matter of opinion.

I don't know how you guys feel on the back design, but I'm not really liking it. Sure, it's customized and reminds me on the Sentinels, but why did you have to put the Capitol on it? I know it has to do with the rebellious theme, but really? Arg!

Silver Monarchs are a simple easy recoloring of a deck that has already been recolored. The Rebels do look awesome and I like them but it just sucks that they aren't fully custom.

The silver monarchs are just like the silver steampunks. Same box recoloration idea. And the back design is almost the same as the white monarchs. How ridiculous. As for this deck, the box looks great, and so does the seal. To me the capitol on the back design is completely out of place. And as for the custom faces, this is just plainly disappointed. Joker and the Thief, do you now understand why we are disappointed?

I am pretty much done with T11`s decks, they are overhyped and mediocre at best, I suggest that anyone wanting to buy their decks invest their money in other well-made decks (Ornate, Seasons, Vortex, Tendril, Galvanic to name a few) instead of wasting your hard-earned money on these decks, really it is an insult to collectors, pretty much saying "we are an established company so we can put 10 hours into a deck and make 10x the money someone who puts 100 hours in does."

In all these variations of the monarchs they can't even be bothered to make the faces match the white decks. Also they only show you pictures of the box on the product page so you dont see how ugly the decks really are.

People say nothing's impossible, but I do nothing everyday.

Today I found something that reminded me of you. But don't worry I flushed and everything went back to normal.

Amen. I find this just ridiculous. Plus, with the "gotta collect 'em all" mentality (that I have as well), we are just pushed into buying those tactics JUST to be up to date with the newest releases and to have them all.

Seriously though why are you all mad? The deck is beautiful with or without custom faces. If you seriously get this hurt and pissed over a few decks not having custom faces you need to go to a different hobby.

Yep couldn't agree more, custom faces aren't everything, it is clear from that badass intricate box design that there has been some decent amount of work and effort put into designing this deck, gotta give them some credit.... I personally will be getting 2 or 3, I really like the standard faces/ barely recoloured faces, they don't stand out or draw suspicion during performances and they are still classy as ever :) Also to all the collectors out there, what does it matter how the cards themselves look like, as a collector we rarely even open the tuck boxes, and if I were forced to stare at just the tuck, I wouldn't mind staring at the gorgeous design of the rebels :P Just my 2 cents.

No I am not a collector. I understand why you guys are disappointed. I've been really physched for the rebels. I just don't see it as that bad of a problem. The recolouration has been somewhat annoying I must admit but on the other hand, the silver monarchs were specifically created to compensate for the demand and design of the white monarchs without making them white monarchs. Overall it's not a huge problem.

Not complaining...but rather stating our opinions. If they aren't up to par with yours, then so be it.

WOW... I just realized how similar the Sentinels and Rebels back designs are. Anyone else see the major resemblance?
I mentioned it in my earlier post. - I know right!

We know that custom faces "aren't everything", but it's the lack of customization that's bothering us. I'm sure that they wanted all FOUR Monarchs to be identical, but they could have just did something better. At least, they didn't have a repeat of the Titanium decks. With those, they just embossed the box and made it a shade lighter/darker. However, these (the Monarchs) might just be off the mark of the Titanium v2's. Also, we know that there WAS some effort in the box design, but that box was created long ago, when the GM were released. We gave them credit for the box long ago, but with the constant repeat and recoloring, how much effort can be given now? With this "new" release, the most credit we can give them is a few hours hopping on Paint and substituting certain colors, not counting the hours of accounting and shipping...of course. :D

I agree, Theory11 is getting DAMN lazy. Why can't they come up with something totally original if all these other Kickstarter and HOPC guys can? Maybe they need to hire some fresh blood in their creative department or something. Have they ever had any decks with custom court cards outside of the Sentinels and not including JAQKS since they didn't design them? Even DeckOne is a recoloring of the standard court cards at most. I hope their next deck is totally custom but I wouldn't hold my breath. Sorry for ranting!

To be honest, THEY did not over hype, they didn't even mention it until it was released.

Also, why hire a design team when their current business model works (very well) and they sell 1,000's of decks.  The average consumer obviously only cares about box/ace/joker.

I'm neither condemning or condoning what T11 does, they are a successful company that puts out quality products.

There's a lot of shouting, ranting, raving, etc. about T11's decks.  I actually used to be one of you guys, lodging similar complaints.  Then I got more serious about practicing magic.

T11 is first and foremost a MAGIC company, in much the same way that E is.  They both have a similar format - DVDs and downloads, few to no books, focus on varying skill levels.

I had a back-and-forth via the interwebs with Zenneth Kok, a reknown working magician.  His new "Project C" Bee cards won't have custom faces, as his Gold Seal New Fan Backs didn't.  His reason is that his spectators might like a really attractive pack of cards with a cool back design, but that they IDENTIFY more with the standard faces, even if you simply recolor them a bit.  They're familiar, they're what they play with at home, it's what they expect playing cards to look like.  It's not even a matter of making the deck "plainer" so as to "not raise suspicion" among spectators.  They recognize standard faces more readily than they do custom ones.

So for magicians, faces that are basically standard, maybe with a slightly improved color scheme, are perfect tools for them.  We know they reprint decks, and they're even starting to admit as much with the re-release of the Sentinels (with much better handling) and the Rebels uncut sheet (which is clearly described as a "first edition printing", to be followed by a "second edition printing", etc.).

The rare stuff is the collector bait, but it's not their bread and butter - the sell at normal retail, not aftermarket prices.  When they're gone, they're gone, period.  The bread and butter are their "unlimited" decks which get reprinted.  And their magic, of course.  Since they're a magic company, and not solely a deck design house.

Nathan (and anyone else with his self-confessed problem), if you're afflicted with gotta-get-em-all-itis, that's your problem and you should seek treatment.  I'm beginning to walk away from more releases than I'm buying.  Not because of a lack of funds (though the costs do build up), but because there's only so many decks a person can have before they stop enjoying them all for more than the simple fact of ownership.

And, lest we forget: if you don't like it, you are NOT BEING FORCED TO BUY IT.  Walk away.  I've been doing it with the recent D&D releases, and I don't miss them a bit.  Others as well, some of which I thought were gorgeous.  The main reason why I am able to do this is that I have control over my hobby, not the other way around.

While in Florida, I came to a rather surprising conclusion.  I like to perform magic.  This means that I'll be using and abusing decks when "in the field", some of which won't survive the return trip.  I made a point on this trip to only bring decks that are common, easily replaceable and that I had many copies of.  This way, if any (or all) of the decks ended up destroyed, I wouldn't lose a lot of sleep over it.  It was very liberating to me to not have that concern over my head about trashing a rare or hard-to-get deck.  Granted, I love most of the attractive and rare decks that I own and don't use as much for magic, but I need to get in the habit of using those for my personal pleasure and only buying small quantities.  No bricks, no half-bricks, not even three - just two.

Further, while I love most, there are some decks I have that I'm not so fond of after all.  Those decks I'm happy to get rid of - and will, in the near future, as I start my return to eBay selling (I have to move those Americana decks somehow, and I had few takers here).  My investment partner took half, found he couldn't sell them to save his life, then returned them to me, so I still have perhaps 11 bricks.

If you have control, it's a hobby.  If the hobby has control, it's a form of addiction.

Back to the topic at hand, I think the Rebels are a sharp-looking deck.  The Capitol building on the deck backs is sort of a throwback to the old Congress playing cards designs, which also had the Capitol Building.  The "plain" faces to me look great with the chosen color scheme.  To me, the all-black-and-white back is gorgeous.  The box, while not the primary feature, really does look sharp as well - I could picture this deck being around at the post-WWI era, perhaps being dealt in a coffeehouse or the back of a speakeasy.  Hell, I could envision Navy pilots playing a round in the carrier's ready room with this deck before a mission in the Pacific, circa the early 1940s.  It's classy, period.

I would respectfully request that you keep this topic for comments directly about the Rebel deck, and save Silver Monarch comments for that topic, and gripes about T11's deck designs as a whole in a new topic.

From what I can see, Shepard Fairey did not design this deck or have anything to do with this deck.  From what I understand, it was designed by the studio that he founded... Which I understand to mean that some artists working for the studio in conjunction with T11 designed the deck... Although I like the deck and will probably pick at least one up, I am a bit dismayed that Fairey did not design this deck... If I am mistaken in any way, would someone please let me know...

@Don... You hit the nail on the head... Not only is it financially liberating to stop collecting every piece of rubbish that is printed just because it says USPCC on the box, but more importantly it is mentally liberating as well... I stopped this quite some time ago and now only collect what I love... And believe it or not, I now actually open a deck here and there...

As a small side note, I find it humorous that the tagline T11 keeps using for this deck, "Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The Rebels" was taken verbatim from Apple's ad campaign "Think Different."
