I believe he lives there. In California, I definitely recommend you go to some of the National Parks. They are beautiful. Try Yosemite and Joshua Park. I've been to almost all in California (multiple times), and they are big and my favorites. If you have some spare time (which I doubt), you should try and go to some of the National parks between Yellowstone and Grand Canyon. I'm talking about Bryce, Glen Canyon, Grand Teton, Arches, Canyonlands, and dozens of others.

It is the official national parks site, and you can easily find the ones closest to you (Golden Gate Bridge National Park and many others in the bay area near San Francisco), and Joshua Tree and others near L.A.
PS: I've been to L.A. multiple times, and although it doesn't make your path from San Francisco to Las Vegas much longer, I don't think you'll find much to do there. Maybe you should plan not staying as long. The city is pretty ugly, and unless you actually stay away from the city itself and stay in the suburbs.
