From looking at my collection, the white strip was used in 1970s and early 1980s.  Check the bottom of your decks to see if there is a UPC bar code or not.  Bar codes started to be used around 1981.

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / USPCC Green back decks
« on: March 28, 2022, 12:33:07 PM »
So I always understood USPCC to have stopped making Green backed decks around 1926, but now I found a green backed Steamboat deck from 1954 ("T" date code, two-digit zip on extra card).  So, am I correct to assume that the discontinuing green backs around 1926 just for Bicycle decks?

While USPCC did start using date codes around that time on their playing card decks, I do not know if the same numbering system carried over into the Fireside Game line of products.

This topic has been moved to A Cellar of Fine Vintages since it concerns antique playing cards.

US17, German Faces - Gaigel - just wanted to clear up that the deck does not have 2 cards each of Ace - 9 as stated in Hochman.  Gaigel is played with A - 10 and 7s, and that is what this deck has.  I would guess that an American faces deck would be Ace - 9, though.  Just not the German faces.  Suits are Leaves, Acorns, Hearts and Bells.

Thanks for sharing these seldom seen seals.  I'm going to add a better pic of the Kalamazoo seal from a sealed Old Oaken Bucket deck I have.

c1920s - Here is a slight variant on US2e Sportsman's #202, with "Made in U.S.A." added to the Ace of Spades.  I don't know which version came first.

To pick up again on the introduction of Air-Cushion Finish discussion from earlier in the thread, I was on Google Books for something else and stumbled into some interesting info.  According to the ads, the first decks to have Air-Cushion Finish were two Congress decks - Dixie Girl and Moonbeams.  Ad is from Oct 7, 1909.  First mention I found of Bicycle decks with Air-Cushion Finish was Sept 17, 1910.  Ads below.

That is a big help.  Thank you!

I was able to find the deck at the WWPCM ( http://a.trionfi.eu/WWPCM/decks05/d02032/d02032.htm ) who listed the manufacturer as Buzza Co.  I found a bit about Buzza Co at The Vintage Valentine Museum - http://www.vintagevalentinemuseum.com/2014/06/maker-buzza-cardozo.html - and OldImprints.com - https://ilab.org/assets/catalogues/catalogs_files_592_greetingcards.pdf

Ok, card sages, here's a deck I have been unable to identify.  It came with a lot of antique cards.  I'm assuming special order, but no idea for whom.  Any guesses?

And here's another Bee variant Ace of Spades.  Less detail than NY60, more than the deck I showed above.  This one is c1920.

What I find interesting is that the Silk Finish looks a lot like the Bee 216 back - see a pic of that deck at https://conjuringarts.org/2013/02/discovered-bee-216-erdnase/

Ok, here's a new one for me.  I bought a USPCC Congress Rose deck, and it has a type of wavy finish on the card I've never seen on another USPCC deck.  Anybody else seen something like this on a USPCC deck or have a guess as to what this is?

The Congress Guy, Kevan Seany, let me know this is Silk Finish.  He even has a video about it:  https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wU0SQ7bWOI0

Hochman is pretty scant on Bee decks.  This Ace of Spades is a bit less detailed than NY60 (more white space around the 92 for example), but still has the name of the company spelled out in full.  I would put this Ace between the two shown in Hochman.

Here is the joker from PU1 with the PU8a Ace of Spades which does not show an accompanying joker in Hochman.

Having a hard time tracking this joker down, so I need some help.  Same back as NYCCC Hart's French Whist, but card is wide size.  Anyone know what brand this joker goes with?

I've seen it claimed that USPCC phased out Green and Brown decks in 1927, which was most likely the year USPCC started using the Stag back as a Bicycle deck (was previously a Capitol deck).  BUT, my 1918ish sample book only shows red and blue for the Capitol Stag deck.  So, a bit more info, but no conclusion.

RU14 American Bank Note - Hochman does not show the generic American Bank Note Ace of Spades, but here are two decks with the same back design, one with ABN Ace of Spades and one with generic.

SU4 - narrow - Liberty Bell Whist # 113 - this is the narrow version of the Liberty Bell # 1776.  Same back design as above, but I don't know if this back design was exclusive to Liberty Bell or used with other brands as well.

73
US32a - Pennant #253 - narrow sized - Sorry, no joker yet, but here's the Ace and card back

74
NY62 - DeLuxe #342 - This is the full size version of the much more common DeLuxe #142.  Comes in a Gold Medal Playing Cards box with a 10 cent tax stamp.  This deck can also be found with a full color joker Ace of Spades.

Here's a slight variation on CDN12a from Hochman - Canadian Hornet #6.  The wrapper was split so I could slide out the Ace of Spades and Joker.  This version does not have Trade Mark underneath the ace, maybe similar to the Bicycle RMF ace which had Trade Mark from 1905 - 1915 and no Trade Mark from 1916 - 1925.
