Title: Another person
Post by: redtank151 on July 10, 2012, 11:12:34 AM
So I'm new on the forum, I registered but wasn't excepted for quite awhile so I kind of forgot about it, came back to find out I was accepted so yay!

So I'm pretty okay with magic and cards and stuff, only been into it for a short time. So I'm not to good.

Feel free to see my badness in general over here : http://www.youtube.com/user/TheCCzzzz?feature=mhee

so I don't have many subscribers and I would like input on my lack of abilities and skills so I ask you to look at it.

That's the power of positive thinking for ya!  :))

Welcome to the Discourse.  You'll find there's a lot of people willing to give good advice.  There's one topic that's pretty lively now about which videos are good for a beginning flourisher to learn from.  Use the search feature - search is your friend...

our spam filter catches genuine people from time to time. I usually go through the hundreds of bots and pick out the real looking folks every month, and you passed the test! :p

Thanks! I have no idea what drew me to just check on the discourse 2 months after I forgot about it. But here I am.

I think I'm past the stage of learning beginner's flourishes. Working on the 360 fan, its not going well.

Is Singapore's card market really that large? A huge portion of our member base is from there, and at least 20% of the decks I ship internationally go out there.

That's the case, from what I hear.  Why else would USPC make a brand exclusively for sale in Singapore?  :))

Asia in general is very big on playing cards.  Lee Asher saw all kinds of stuff in China when he was on a lecture tour there.  Favorite US brand is Bee, favorite domestic brand is Yaoji.

Yeah Aladdins are what we have here, though most of us prefer to have an air-cushion finish. The Aladdin's do indeed keep their spring much much longer than Tallys

Most Singaporeans who are in to cards are mostly into flourishing, Aladdins have a better grip over eachother and executing cuts are much easier, but they clump up real fast and you need alot of effort to fan it good.

I was also surprised by the amount of singaporean cardists and members on these forums: it made me reconsider my judgements in the density of population there! Welcome to the forums! I hope you'll enjoy it here. Some other members should also come and welcome you pretty soon. Btw, Alex, where did Lara go?

All other factors being equal, Air Cushion (textured) cards are usually not as stiff and springy as smooth cards.  It's simple physics - which is easier to bend, a sheet of solid metal or a sheet of metal with a bunch of dents banged into it?  :))  The dents affect the structural integrity, resulting in a card that's not as stiff.  That cling you mentioned with the smooth Aladdins is a characteristic of a smooth card, while the fanning/slipping ability is what dimpled card surfaces were made for - just like how golf balls are dimpled for better aerodynamics because the dimples create air pockets ("a cushion of air") around the surface.

Btw, Alex, where did Lara go?

I saw her reply to something earlier this week.  As far as I know, she's still in Beijing.

That's really cool I always thought some other better longer-lasting stock was used on the aladdins for our insane humidity levels. Never thought the finish would affect springy-ness of the card. So actually your golf-ball thing got me thinking, in a card throw of equal angle, velocity and wind-speeds, would a dimpled card travel further? MYTHBUSTERS GO!

Simply put - yes, it would.  It's more aerodynamic.

The texturing or lack thereof is actually not a feature of the finish.  It was, once, but these days the paper is "predimpled" or left smooth in the process of gluing the layers of card stock together.
