So I've been a Zippo collector for some time, I have a site dedicated to that collection and just recently updated it to be able to add the Decks I pick up. I'm debating on how to present the decks, so I was wondering if I could get some opinions from Discourse members.

If you could visit http://www.sparkzcollector.com and hover over the "Playing Card" nav button you'll see "Bicycle", please click to enter the page. It is currently password protected (Password: DECK )

On the page there are 3 samplings of what I've come up with so far for displaying the decks on the site. If I could get some feedback it would be great, if you have a suggestion, that's cool, if you hate them all and the site....no worries, lol

Thanks in advance,
Tony

Option 3 - shows front n back of deck and displays them nice and big. I like the site too. I have the zippo set and use the zippo lighter. I don't smoke, I just like the flicking motion lol

If you're setting up to be a seller, you might try using option two for the "listings" page, then when people click through to see the details and click "Buy", display the back and front of box and perhaps a sampling of some of the faces.  You want the listings to be neat and concise, allowing you to list more decks in less space on a webpage.

Awesome site- I would say option 3
Last night I stayed up late playing poker with Tarot cards. I got a full house and four people died.

For a personal site, consider a model that fuses the listing pages of a retailer (single box image to represent a deck) with a click-through to a page with images more like what's found on the Playing Card Wiki at playingcards.wikidot.com.  He does some very nice photo spreads on his decks, really nice work.  It's a shame that the site isn't kept very current - it was a great resource for me when I started collecting.

I see what your saying Don...I'll crack open a deck and see what i can come up with. That being said, what would be the most important things to show in a pic of an open deck? I would assume anything that makes a deck unique? I saw what you meant on the wiki site, just wondering what "keys" of a deck to show.

Thanks for the input

Just an update, changed the card layout a bit and if you click on one of the 1st 3 decks you will get a details page. Currently with a stock photo, I'm thinking of taking my own photos of the decks laid out and maybe some scans of key cards.

Thanks again for your input and comments.

You're correct in saying that the deck's "keys" are the elements that make it unique.  A standard USPC-faced pack would have only Aces, Jokers and ad cards.  A more customized deck will have more unique elements, and you should show at least a sampling of these elements.  Jason Arakelian at the1eyedjack.com does a good job of showing some of the keys of a deck on the pages he sells them from.  Depending on how custom a deck is, you may require more than a single photo to show enough detail.

Don't neglect showing the box as well.  Two photos would do it - taken from an angle at one corner, each photo could be arranged to show three of the six sides of a tuck box.  And don't forget, some tucks these days have interior details that are worth noting.

I can't wait for the Imperial decks to turn up, so I can bask in the gold-foil interior. Looking directly into the tuck will be like being stuck in a gold brick.
