Interesting back - how do we know it is from a Hart deck?

The character is clearly Pickwick - visit this link for information and pictures of the Pickwick deck by Kyd

We have used lighter fluid with great success - cleaning and removal of sticky paper, paste, adhesives, etc.

I guess asking who it is - and naming two prospects - might pry information from this source, if there was information to be pried!  ;)
We are still looking at a range of alternatives, including some members of the Club and expect to make a selection before Christmas so the design team has enough time to do their work, meet a reasonable production schedule, etc.

Nice ad decks - the other could be English.

I'm still working on my vintage knowledge and feeling comfortable with my appraisal of my possible purchases, The Blue deck is still sealed, and the red is in really nice condition, the box is a little worn, but couldn't be happier, been wanting these for a while :)

Have seen these sets, with these great designs, go for as much as $200 mint.

Also, the Branded Black Reserve Note and the Unbranded do not have the same cards in them.........The Unbranded has the Black Backs, while the Branded has the same deck as the Reserve Note.

I never realized that the Branded and Unbranded decks were actually a different set of cards. Oh that I could go back in time and not have passed this project up. I was foolish, and new to playing cards...
I get a bit confused about these but I can say that I have #10 of 500 in the Private Reserve with a nice silver seal & Jackson's name signed. So definitely 500 for that one.
Then the branded Black Reserve Note I have says there were 1550 - with a similar seal.
The unnumbered Private Reserve, red seal, I have has the Black back [as mentioned above]
hope this helps with the numbers.

Can you say which American magazine? - The Stationer was a publication, I thought, of the Stationers Company in London.

That's a very cool National Bicycle back, Max. I have never seen it, and I do also collect non-USPC bicycle card back designs (of course). That one must be very rare, indeed.

(Yes, Don, it is me, Joseph.)
As the description with that back is from an English advertisement, I think that back was likely only used for export thereto - which would explain why it is so uncommon or non-existent in the USA. It would also explain why we have never seen it in the many sample books we have seen over the years.

On one visit to USPC when valuing their collection, Judy and I discovered a whole box of different and rather poor imitations of Bicycle decks which their patent and legal people had accumulated over the years. Lots of little companies, mainly in far off places, trying to cash in on the Bicycle brand name.

The answer is likely that the deck was popular and there were many different printings - it is common on subsequent printings of souvenir decks to change a few pix. They probably didn't change the leaflets until they ran out of printed stock.

There is a strong argument for having the four colors distinctive from one another as the idea was to help people avoid errors, so the closer the colors, the less effective the solution.

Beautiful tribute and a deck you'll want in your collection

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Re: Arrow Playing Card Co.
« on: October 02, 2015, 09:17:32 AM »
Just bought a double deck of Arrow Playing Cards.  This ace lists 734-754 Mather St as their address, and the ace in Hochman has an address of 800 So. Sibley.  Anyone know which address was first and if there were any other addresses?  Any other tips as to dating these decks other than address?

Hello Chuqii,

The Arrow Playing Card Company, manufacturer of card and board stocks, was incorporated in 1927 at 800 Sibley Street with the Capital Stock of $30,000. The incorporators were: L. Grollman, C. Harris and A. A. Schlesinger. In 1930, the company has arranged for an increase in capital from $60,000 to $120,000, for general expansion at 734-754 Mather Street, before it becomes the Arrco Playing Card Company in 1935.

From a 15-year window, down to only three.  Awesome!
Seems to me a five year window as Mather St. used from 1930-35.

Very nice set and special to have a sealed one with intact stamp. Well done!

Cryptocard is a fantastic source of information about the playing card manufacturers. Thank you Crypto

Interesting - if made in USA for Michaud, why did he commission the deck? Was it for publicity for his cognacs?

45
Likely the Michaud deck was made in France specifically for an American publisher/distributor, i.e. Nelson.

The info in these posts is quite accurate. Deck was published by Democracy PCC in 1918 [likely as pointed out actually manufactured by Russell PCC]. In unused condition with some handling and box not mint I think it should be worth about $500 - maybe a bit more.

I would not be surprised if you found another 1901 style deck with the same stock and finish as the 1902. I suspect, like Don, that a number of finishes were available and were used somewhat interchangeably.

Hello! I was wondering if the back found on this de luxe deck:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-PLAYING-CARDS-DE-LUXE-No-142-NEW-YORK-CONSOLIDATED-CARD-CO-U-S-A-/201422896154?hash=item2ee5bd7c1a

can be found on any other decks other than these?

Thanks!
I believe that back was also used for the Triton #42 brand
