My question is whether or not they will fan. Still, plastic decks don't fan for shit, and now you can make ANY deck a plastic deck.

I'm gonna pick some up within a week or two and test it out. OP will deliver, I promise.

Playing Card Plethora / Bicycle LGBT Deck (KS)
« on: May 08, 2013, 10:28:48 PM »
For those that don't know, LGBT = Lesbian, gay, bi, tran.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/117486612/lgbt-playing-cards-a-uspc-card-deck?ref=recently_launched

I can't help but feel this is capitalizing on the civil rights movement as opposed to promoting it.

Let's see... thoughts?

The backs are actually pretty neat. They're unique in the industry. I would do away with the text around the = sign though.

The faces don't have proper color contrasts, and the indice font is way too big. All in all, even though I get the symbolism of the faces, I think it's rather lazily put together.

The symbol cards are pretty nifty though.

Playing Card Plethora / What's really "rare" and what's just a fad?
« on: April 30, 2013, 06:37:25 PM »
I've been thinking about this topic for a while now, but the discussion in the Jerry's thread prompted me to make a thread about it: http://aethercards.com/discourse/playing-card-plethora/lee-asher-jerry's-nuggets-sale-2013/20/

Basically, I have this hypothesis that "limited runs" no longer result in high priced decks, or even an increase in market value.

Let's look at why people want a Jerry's Nugget, Vegas Club, Dunes, Golden Nugget or a 40s Bee deck:

- It is history.
- It is rare.
- Arguably look/handle better

Let's look at why the value of these cards has only gone up in the last decade, and continue to climb steadily every year:

- It is history.
- It is desired by more than just card collectors. Vegas memorabilia collectors, for example, would want a Jerry's. Antique collectors would want a 40's Bee deck.
- It is literally impossible to recreate them, even with the greatest minds on the planet and an infinite amount of money.
- They will never get sequels, reprints, or other such things that reduce a deck's value.
- Supply will always go down, demand will always go up.

Result? Value always goes up.

What about decks like the Gold Arcane, White Centurion, Black Ghost v1, White Ghost v1, etc.?

- Demand always goes up, but supply remains steady as they are always available for purchase from stores. This is subject to change in the next decade as supplies go down.
- These decks are not history, they are just the premiere decks from beloved companies in the genre. As a result, they are sought after by no one except hardcore deck collectors.
- These decks often get sequels, reprints, etc.
- In many cases, it is literally impossible to recreate them, as they were made on old USPCC Cincinnati paper.

Result? Value remains steady at a relatively high amount, but fluctuates depending on promotions the respective company may hold (i.e. the price of the LTD deck went from 100 USD to ~40 USD because of Ellusionist promotions after the release).

What about the current stream of new and limited decks?

- They are not in any way history.
- The demand is low because of the huge supply and variety.
- These decks almost always get sequels/reprints/relreleases/etc.
- These decks are often made by amateurs, which doesn't lower the quality of the card, but definitely lowers the value since amateurs are not "famous."
- Supply will always go up, demand will continue to go down. A larger variety of choices enter the market, but not as many new collectors enter the market.
- These decks only appeal to indie art junkies + card collectors.
- Recreating these decks is simple, so there is no "OMG WHAT IF I CAN'T FIND THESE ANYWHERE NEXT YEAR!" feelings about them.

Result? These cards rarely grow in price, and rarely are easy to sell on the market. Four years ago, a release like S&Mv4 would mean that those cards are gone from shelves the next day. Today, pretty much every release is not a big deal. The rarest of decks come back as promotions, or in a rerelease.

So what will retain value in today's market? Oddly enough, it's reprints/modifications of classic decks. For example the white New Fan Back by Zenneth could be huge in a decade.

The new E/T11 deck? That will be forgotten quickly, as their next deck is right around the corner.

The same things happened in other avenues of collecting. Pokemon/Magic cards, video games, etc. They all get super saturated and then it turns into finding the diamond in the rough.

Is this bad or good? I can't say. My post is merely an observation, and it's up to you to contribute your end of the discussion and make of it what you will.  :)

Apparently David Copperfield helped come up with a lot of the tricks in the movie.

It's not everyday that Hollywood does magic.

I just thought this list is pretty funny. I can't even think of what half of the terms relate to, and we're not even close to the first page for most/all of them.

5% found us by searching "triangle deck prototype"

4% found us by searching "papercuts chris hestnes diamond me"

2% "cards with gold rim edges"

1% "steam dunk heroes" <- that's not a typo

The rest are all <1%, but multiple people still use the search terms to find the site:

"what is the phonetic spelling of my name"
"alex ranking status bar"
"how to fix grainy photos"
"make me invisible"
"amazing adventures"
"white labels"

The most popular decks according to what people search for in OUR site's search bar:

- Lance Miller's decks
- Randy Butterfield's decks
- Skulkor decks
- Blue Crown decks
- The Virts deck

The Conversation Parlor / **IMPORTANT SITE CHANGES** Please Read
« on: February 11, 2013, 05:07:42 PM »
So a few months ago I promised we would have some big updates to the forums, and here they are! I'm really excited to reveal them, as everything has been in the works for a while now. (This is being posted in PCF for now, and will be moved later).

A Name Change!
When I created this forum, it was supposed to just be an add-on to my business. It immediately exploded into being a hub for playing card chat, so I ran with it. Since then, I decided to pursue other career goals that don't involve being a deck producer. However, cards, as well as this community, remain very near and dear to me.

Still, the biggest issue I had with this place was that the name made ZERO sense! Aether Cards doesn't work in the context of a forum. "The Discourse" does nothing to reveal the content of the site. AetherCards.com/Discourse works well when it's a company forum, but as as standalone site it's just silly.

Over the next month or two, we will be moving to PlayingCardForum.com

A generic, yet simple name that gets the job done.

AetherCards.com will CONTINUE to work just as it always does, but the primary domain will be playingcardforum.com. If you want to update your bookmarks now, feel free to do so, as the redirect is already up and running.

What does this mean for the site?
An increase in traffic because we will be indexed by search engines with far more ease. Also, people typing "playing card forum" into Google will no longer need to click on sites about poker and casinos.

It also means some visual changes, most notably to the logo.

This change will not affect our content in any way.

Lastly, we will finally have an abbreviation to use for the site. "AC" is weird, "The Discourse" takes too long to type, but "PCF" is short and rolls off the tongue. :D

Content changes unrelated to this are:

- The release of the Deck Battles board headed by John.
- More promotions assuming activity continues to pick up at this rate
- The release of a "premium" board, hidden to everyone that doesn't unlock it. Here we can have discussions related to anything, without any worries about who will see what. Wanted to proclaim your undying love to another forum member? Wanted to trash someone who scammed you? Wanted to reveal juicy information about upcoming releases that you were told not to share? This board will be the place for that!

These are listed in chronological order.

That's it folks, thanks for tuning in. :)

Let me know what you guys think about this, of course, as well as any other site suggestions you have.

Deck Reviews! / How To Play: Deck Battles!
« on: January 31, 2013, 11:52:51 PM »
So what rules are there? None! You can vote for whichever deck you want each day, hassle free. You can promote the deck you want to win to your friends so it can come out on top.

You don't need to leave a comment/critique backing up your vote....

Unless you want to be eligible to win some swag motherfuckin' prizes...dawg

Prizes are selected from the following each day:

- Custom Title
- Custom Badge
- Stickied thread in Lolaq for 1 week
- Your safe for work slogan of choice displayed on the banner for 1 week
- Custom-made forum signature
- You get to choose the next Deck Battle match-up
- +15 to reputation
- +50 to reputation
- Your photo is added to the list of celebrity avatars available for selection in the profile
- Prank-A-Buddy! A person of your choosing from your buddy list will have their display name and personal text changed to whatever you want (rated PG)

The winner of the prize will be selected randomly from the list of non-spam replies to each poll.*

BUT DUDES, how will you stop people from rigging votes, if no replies are required to have a vote count?

Well we have every voting IP and username logged, and while we can't know who voted for what, we can know who voted more than once using devious methods.

Also, large scale rigging is fairly obvious. If we get 20 replies per poll each day for a month, and then suddenly we have 300 votes, it's pretty obvious someone rigged things.

You can check back every 24-48 hours for a new battle.

Playing Card Plethora / Deck Battles Board: A preview of what is in store
« on: January 14, 2013, 10:41:10 PM »
Deck Battles is a board where decks of cards are pitted against each other in a bloody battle to the death each day. The winner is decided by a simple poll, and by replying to the battle with a post about why you made your decision, you can win awesome forum prizes.

The prizes get cooky, here are a couple we have drafted so far:

- Custom Badge
- Stickied thread in Lolaq for 1 week
- Your safe for work slogan of choice displayed on the banner for 1 week
- You get to choose the next Deck Battle match-up
- Your photo is added to the list of celebrity avatars available for selection in the profile
- Prank-A-Buddy! A person of your choosing from your buddy list will have their display name and personal text changed to whatever you want (rated PG)

Certain details are still up in the air, but what is for certain is that we will have face-offs between the most common winners at some point.

Each day, a new random voter will earn one of those prizes.

ETA on the board is soon.  :)

The Conversation Parlor / New promotions & future for modding
« on: January 12, 2013, 03:33:07 AM »
Hey folks, you may have noticed some changes due to the increase in activity lately!

I'd like to welcome Joshua Robinson as the Talk Park mod as well as John as a mod for the upcoming Deck Battles board. Both of these positions are to see how well they do, so hopefully they'll remain permanent. They join the ranks of Lara as leaders of those respective boards. :)

Don Boyer, who has been insanely helpful this past year, has been promoted to Omni Mod. Him and Curt will definitely make a great team.

Within a few months, if we continue to see this much activity, I will be promoting a Deck Review mod and potentially a Design & Dev mod if someone takes initiative in that board.

That's all. :)

Feedback + Support / Ranking Up: A Short Guide on Being Promoted
« on: January 09, 2013, 04:24:28 PM »
Fact: This board has tons of ranks, and it can get a tad confusing. Basically, you have your rank name (i.e. Newcomer, Lurker, Ace of Spades, etc.), your progress bar until your next rank, and your rank group.

Your rank group is just a further indication of your dedication. When your rank group increases, the color of your rank name and progress bar changes, and you also gain a gold star under the progress bar.

Rank groups also adhere to certain rank names styles. Below you will find a list of all our ranks as well as the post count requirement for them:

How was it?

47
Would anyone be interested in a board where, each day, we voted on two random decks? Winners each week get a point! It would culminate in an epic deck of the year battle in December among the top 10 or something.

The format of the board would be something like this:

Sticky: Leaderboards
Sticky: Encarded's Aurum vs. Encarded's Tendril (1/1/2013)
---
All non-sticky posts will be discussions for battles, nominations, battle ideas, etc.

We could do something like Deck of the Month too, with the winner being memorialized for all time in our leaderboards, and then getting a sweet signature for their profile if the creator/representative is on this forum.

Thoughts?

If I see a post with no personal avatar, I'm pretty sure I'm going to have fun setting you to a random celebrity. Someone here has already been acquainted with EMILIO ESTEVES

Back from my binge collecting days I accrued several hundred decks, mostly all different and unique in some way, that I opened but never used aside from a few fans.

The result is I have nowhere to put them, and nothing to do with them but leave them rotting in a suitcase.

Aside from the handful of rare decks in there I don't see how it would be possible to sell any of it (I know CardsRFun sold his opened decks, but he did it to help out his dad, and I would just buy popsicles with mine or something).

On the other hand, I think throwing them away would be a waste, and an insult to all the folks who don't have the means to get these decks.

Using them is out of the question too, since I have my own personal gross of Vortex decks to use, and going through about one deck a week, I have enough for the next few years. Plus, *using* a vintage Blue Ribbon deck somehow feels wrong to me. :P

Maybe you guys could help me with this conundrum.

FYI, on a somewhat unrelated note, what is up with the whole "opened and used toys only" drives around the holidays? I wanted to donate a gross of decks, but apparently they'd only accept used stuff. Absolutely baffling.

On that note, if any of you do charity work (like I know Don does hospital magic tours for the children) and would like some free, high quality, open decks of cards, let me know. I'd only ask you pay the shipping and handling charge, and maybe this way I can unload a few dozen of these.

I want to get rid of my open decks before I sell my sealed stuff, because right now organization is a nightmare!
