Title: Standard Bicycle Uncut Sheets???
Post by: Evan on December 18, 2011, 08:25:02 PM
Do Standard Bike Uncuts exist?
I've never seen anywhere selling them and never seen people who have them.

Um, a gazillion?  Dude, they're Bicycle Rider Backs, not some rare, limited edition super-metallic gold foil embossed wonder cards finished in the magic sweat of a god for hyper-slickness and anti-ballistic properties!  Only dirt is more common!  The Rider Back's been in print since 1887 - that's over 124 YEARS!  By now, the USPC and their predecessor companies must have printed more Bicycle Rider Backs than there were people alive at the time added to all those born since then!  They create thousands of decks a day in that design.

Gambler's General Store is USPC's official retailer - they have links to it at bicyclecards.com.

Oh.  My.  Gawd.

How on earth did you come to the conclusion that the Rider Back went out of production just because the Mandolin Back was created?

Or do I even want to know?

Rider backs are still everywhere in the name of standard back.
The box changed, but the back of the cards remains.
And it's not going anywhere.

I'm pretty sure that's just a jumbo index uncut, only showing the back. That's the only conclusion I can come to, seeing as the USPCC have said that they don't sell uncut normal rider backs. But maybe he got some kind of deal? I'm not sure.

Because the USPCC has recently forbidden companies such as Ellusionist and Theory11 of making gaff cards and editing the copyrighted back design, so a magician (I believe his name is Richard Turner) produced this deck of cards that looks very similar to laymen, but you can make gaff cards for this deck without infringing their copyright.

What? Really?
Do you mean that ultragaff and red gaff/blue gaff will not be printed anymore?

I've talked to Alex Chin about this uncut.  It is not a Jumbo Index one.  It is a regular Rider back uncut.

The problem was slightly more complex than that.  The copyright on the Rider Back EXPIRED - it's nearly 125 years old.  Other companies overseas tried replicating the back on their own cards in an effort to profit off the popularity of the design.  Bicycle's legal team felt that a solid legal defense to protect against such attempts was to not alter the back design, out of concern that it would dilute any trademark defense in court.  So any requests to print alterations of the back design, as well as the unique Joker and Ace of Spades designs, were declined.

Obviously, magicians weren't terribly pleased about this.  USPC worked with a small team of magicians, including Richard Turner, on designing a deck that was close enough to the Rider Back without actually being the Rider Back.  They tested some designs with focus groups and found the Mandolin Back to be almost indistinguishable to most spectators.  They designed it specifically so the back could be altered - it's a new design, thus covered under new copyright laws, so legal defense against forgeries is solid.  They also made them traditionally cut, to make them shuffle and faro face down with ease.

that explain why arcane gaff deck is mandolin back

The ARCANE deck has an ARCANE back, and so do the gaff decks!!!  Please, you make my brain hurt...  Opinions and free speech are great, but I beg of you, do a LITTLE research before you start sounding like you don't know what you're talking about.  I don't claim to have exclusive rights to being correct, and I welcome corrections when I'm wrong, but I can tell the difference between Mandolins and Arcanes...

I have Red and a Blue regular Rider Back sheets (not Jumbo index).  I picked them up years ago on ebay.  This was maybe around 2000-2002, somewhere in that range.

They don't seem to pop up quite so often these days.  I don't know how often they get out of the factory.

I don't really have much advice for where to find one, aside from keeping your eye out around any magic sales/auction sites, ebay, etc.

This site shows the blue jumbo for a mere $15:

Gambler's General Store is the official retailer for USPC/Bicycle.  I'm betting if you ask, they probably also stock red and standard index - maybe even bridge sized.  It would be strange if that was the only color/index/size combo they offered.

In the gallery, the "Recycled" card is using a modified Rider Back.  That's a SINGLE CARD, while you mentioned the entire deck - as I will quote:

that explain why arcane gaff deck is mandolin back

If you are referring to a single card, then REFER TO A SINGLE CARD rather than the whole deck.  We aren't mind readers, we can't figure out what you're referring to if you don't state it CLEARLY.  I can understand that English isn't your first language, but please be more careful if you want to be understood - unless you're just interested in inflating your post count, in which case, just give up now.

I too got them around that time from eBay. The framed picture is indeed a normal faced sheet. I had a blue sheet as well but the frame broke. I bought a Red Riderback, Blue Riderback, and Blue Bee uncut sheet for about $9 a piece. That was during a time when they didn't charge people for uncut sheets. I'm assuming the seller had once worked at USPCC because I've never seen them actually for sale (with the exception of the jumbo index link). Maybe these are the most rare sheets of them all! I kid. But for a man who loves his classics, this was a must-have.

I'd wager the other standard Bike styles are available.  It sounds odd that they'd only offer blue jumbo index.  Has anyone contacted GGS customer service to inquire?

Maybe someone who wants a sheet should try asking the USPC who has them.  When you go to the source, you're likely to get the best info.
