Playing Card Plethora / Re: Legacy Deck - 4PM Designs
« on: November 20, 2013, 03:19:24 AM »
Will probably overspend my budget this month...
Sherlock, Cthulhu, Zin+Mana, Legacy...

What?  No love for Pagan?  :))  Comes out today!

Seriously, though, the Legacy deck has a classic style to it - I'm reminded of when I saw the Hornets deck for the first time.  It feels like it's a design that could easily be decades old - and I mean that in the best possible way!  Damn, I wish I didn't need a new car...but hey, it's Christmas in 35 very short days!
Forgot about the Pagan. Added it in on my edit.

Guess I'll be asking which projects will be using Backerkit. That should free up some funds for Legacy and Pagan, since I don't think 4PM or Uusi will be using it.

Love those courts. Sleek and elegant. Even if you don't like the new version, this is still a great opportunity to grab some original Manas.

19 bucks for the original deck isn't so bad. I've seen them go for a lot more.

Oh man. I just saw this. Guess he's taking my money.

Settled for 2 decks of each
Same here, although no guarantee I'll actually stick with the pledge.

From what I remember in 188
T11 Rebels - 98HKD
Bee Premium - 98HKD - 1F store
Bee Quality
HOPC Nautical - 98
HOPC 2012 London
Seasons
Karnival
Grid 2.0
Allure
MMD

http://magicpro.com.hk/ - That's the 2F store in 188.
Besides the ones listed on the website (from what I remember):
Most of the Ellusionist & T11 decks. Not 100% sure on D&D decks
Blue Bloods v1 - 110HKD (if they still have more). I've been picking up a deck each time I go there.
Deco
Aurum?
Bohemia
EPC's Ritual, Ritual Premier, Divine. Can't remember if they had Ritual Gold
Coterie Bee (if you're lucky)
Amber Stag (or was this the 1F store?)
Club 808 Cigar
Secret Weapon
Tactical Playing Cards
Asura

Another one I haven't been to in a long time is in Mongkok. Somewhere on Nathan Road (East side of the road). The building is between Mongkok MTR Exit E2 and Dundas Street. When looking into the building from the street, there are stores selling watches (Breitling, Seiko etc) on the right hand side, and a pair of escalators leading to the basement and upstairs on the left hand side. The store is upstairs, but I can't remember which floor. I believe it was on the East side of the building,

A Google Maps search of Hong Kong only turned up one shop - the one in Mongkok you mentioned. It's even on the correct street, though the entrance appears to be on Shantung Street on the map - not that the map's always right, am I right?  :))  The pointer says it's in the Chung Kiu Commercial Building, and that the Mongkok Baptist Church shares that building.

I'd wager you were accessing the building from King Wah Centre next door on that block - that building has a face on Nathan Road.  There's probably some connection between the two buildings not shown on the map.  Or that the map is utterly wrong, which I've had happen before.  Assuming I'm looking at the correct place, it's on the 3rd floor (UK reckoning).

Those buildings aren't connected. If you look between the buildings on Google Maps from Shandong Street, there's a gap between them.
Also, I don't remember pushing so deep into a building that it could have been another. It was about 25-35 paces from the front entrance to the back wall.

I'm usually leery of relying on Google for shop locations in Hong Kong, unless they have an up to date website, as turnover here can happen within 6-12 months.

[EDIT]
It might be Sino Centre or Nathan Centre. The entrance looks familiar. I might swing by if I head over there just to double check. Nothing beats boots on the ground.

[EDIT2]
Regarding my first post, it should be 188 Wan Chai Road, not 198.
I got 298 Hennessy Road and 188 Wan Chai Road mixed up. 298 is for computer parts and accessories, whilst 188 is console gaming and some collectibles.

I took another look at the Sino Centre - I'm 90% sure this is the building. Thanks to images from Google, the escalator and hallways look correct.

Hong Kong uses the UK system, so G/F is the bottom floor, and 1/F is the storey above that.

198 Wan Chai Road. The mall is shaped like a figure 8. Go to the right hand loop on the 1F. It's close to a store that sells snacks. On 2F, go to the left hand loop (Magic Pro HK, but their website doesn't list everything). SW corner of the building.

The 2F store has a lot more decks available, but the price might be slightly higher than the store on the 1F. There will be some difference in the stock available.

There probably are more out there that I haven't seen.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Call Of Cthulhu by Shane Tyree

Although I do not understand the concept behind Cthulhu, this deck comes across to me as very confusing. If I was to potentially back it, I would be completely unsure which category I would want to choose and why. What exactly are the difference between each category and why should I spend the extra money in backing it for that reason? Also where are the add ons that would make me want to spend more money on this deck than any other?
Decks available:
Unlimited
Limited (~700 available?)
Tarot deck
PDF copy of Writhing Dark Anthology (all tiers)

12 USD - Unlimited deck
24 USD - 2x Unlimited
25 USD - 1xLE
35 USD - 1x Tarot
36 USD - 3x Unlimited
47 USD - 1x Unlimited, 1x Tarot
50 USD - 2xLE
60 USD - 5x Unlimited

Much like card collecting, pledge at a level you are comfortable with and if you like the deck.

Add-ons posted in Shane's latest update:
Unlimited deck
Sticker sheet
Tarot
Coin
Brick

Wait a sec...  The only difference between the standard and limited edition Bicycle decks is the phrase that appears below the Bicycle logo?  That's the whole difference, right there?  That don't seem right...
The spade on the limited has tentacles!

Oh, well, in THAT case...

um... seriously... if the art between the two is somehow different, which remains to be seen (i guess), after reading the KS page and all the tiers, i would have no idea how to get both decks. i see one for each of the limited and the tarot, etc., but i don't even see any add-ons (yet...).  :-\ man, i'm kinda scared of what all he may end up adding on for the people who will die for this chtulhu stuff. personally, i'm on the edge of my seat in anticipation of the book written by kickstarter backers! :karrit:

Newest update from Shane puts unlimited deck at 11USD for domestic, 13USD for international.

Does this deck come with black and white version.

Unlikely. The B&W version are test decks. I'm not even sure if those are commercially available.

I've seen them in Hong Kong.

I can't remember the exact price they were going at, but it was more than what I paid for the HOPC Nauticals (~12USD each). I did chat with the staff about the red normal deck and the black test deck.

When factoring the other decks I got in that haul, they weren't high up on my interest meter.

Emperor was fairly open early on with the private funding part. If no mention was made until halfway through, then it would be different.

I remember they took quite the grilling/aggressive comments at the start (I was a pretty early backer on that project... kicking myself that I only got 1 blue though -.- when I had the opportunity to get any number XD).
A little while after the grilling they revealed the funding etc
Guess I was wrong there. I was aware of the deck, but didn't have time to look until the 6th day or so.

Legit websites. Designers want to entice viewers to fund their project, so their project pages on Kickstarter are visually enticing and endlessly thoughtful. If they’re the real deal, their website will echo a similar level of care and detail, so check out the project website. Can you tell this isn’t the designer’s first rodeo? If it is their first rodeo (that is, first time trying playing card design), do they have past experience as designers or illustrators?

Don't know that I agree with this part. Jackson did not exactly have a great website. On coffee with D&D, Jackson mentioned he is working with someone on a website design. Not sure if it's his personal website or a "Kings Wild" website. I think Jackson was the exception to these Club 808 rules and recommendations.
I think there's more than a few exception to that rule. Chris Chelko didn't and still doesn't have a site (listed) either besides his instagram page; I don't think all the items are delivered yet, but I'd say the Whispering Imps KS is a success. I think those 808 guidelines are good, but in the end you've got to make your own judgement call.

Jackson did have 2 previous successful projects, which kinda changes how people view him as a project creator.

That list could use a few addenda.
For example, when someone comes to Kickstarter announcing they're designing a deck to be made by USPC but have a ridiculously low goal, say $1,000 or even $5,000, you need to know whether they're supplementing the project with their own funds.  If not, then it's clear the "designer" has no clue about the real-world costs involved and hasn't done enough research - they're likely inexperienced designers at best, utterly clueless at worst.
Can anyone else think of rules of thumb that should be a part of this guide?
I still remember the blue emperors went something like that - and now look how in demand they are (at least for the time being)

Name dropping or a CV certainly helps if it's a new creator. Lee mentioned his background with E early on for the Empire deck. Chris (Whispering Imps) told us that he was working with Mark Stutzman on the design for the project.

For projects that have gone a couple of days already, I'd say checking creator activity, either via updates or the comments, as well as the level of transparency provided. Even after launch, this is important, ESPECIALLY if a promise is made on how often an update will come.

As for this new project, I have talked with Bicycle, and I know what is needed to get the deck printed and delivered on schedule.

The estimated delivery date is July 2014- and he "talked with Bicycle"?
Probably learned from his previous project. Said July 2013, then got pushed back to September (delay of proof delivery). Project got delayed again to Nov 2013 because the proof wasn't correct.

Jackson even said it for Fed 52 - he would rather have a later delivery date in case any errors pop up during production. Uusi missed their Bohemia deck delivery date because of 2 USPCC errors.

Quote
His first project "Dragon's Hoard " was due to be shipped in July 2013

I like the deck, and want to back- just too many red flags right now
My notes on his updates
July 19 - Game files sent to printers.
Aug 17 - update mention printing company putting together a proof.
Sept 5 - Proof arrives. Doesn't like it - a little too dark. Sent back an update to printer.
Sept 23 - New proof on delivery.
Sept 29 - Proof arrives, confirmed. Faster turnaround could be due to ink adjustment. Printing probably starts.

July 2013 was way too early for his previous project since he hadn't even sent the artwork to the printers.

Turnaround for receiving the decks is around 2 months after the proofs have been confirmed.
Uusi's Royal Optik - Contract signed on July 9 (slowdown due to holidays). Decks arrive Aug 17.
Whispering Imps - Proof confirmed on Aug 22. Decks arrived early Oct.
Federal 52 - Proofs arrived May 22. Decks shipped from USPCC in early August.

If he hadn't learned from his previous project, that would be an even bigger red flag. As it is, it sounds like he's made adjustments in his timeline based on his past experience.

I got a few during the KS project, but not as many as I should have, or wanted to. For some reason, I tought that he had said somewhere that the standard ones would be available for purchase after the project, adn I figured I'd wait. Well, that was obviously a BIG mistake on my part. Well, at least I have a few of all of the versions, including signed and the blacks. Although I wanted to open and use these, I'm not cracking the cello on these for anything now.
A limited number should be available after the project.

However, there's the matter of decks getting damaged during shipping. There also were some incorrect orders as well.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: What are your buying "Rules"
« on: October 10, 2013, 01:34:11 AM »
One of my other threads kind of morphed into this discussion so I figured I would just start one specifically for this topic.

So what are your buying rules? Do you have a set budget? Per Deck, week, month?
Do you only buy Custom Decks, Bee's, Bicycles?
Do you by multiples to flip, use, trade?
I tend to treat buying decks the same way I do with any other purchase (except food) - look at it, think it over, and then decide if I really want it or if I can wait. In a way KS, is good for me because I can pledge early and decide if I want to cancel later on or not.

For cards not on KS, I have a wishlist of cards I'm interested in that I update every month or so. Some will grade out at a higher priority than others, and this determines how much I spend if the deck is in front of me.

I visit magic shops once every 2 weeks to a month. These are my go to places because I occasionally find a really, really, good deal. I picked up a Tendril for 20USD, and 2x Blue Bloods v1 for 30USD.

I only use eBay and online shopping as a last resort for decks on my wishlist (or decks I don't think will be available locally).

Pesta as a joker would be interesting.

On a side note - I was in Hong Kong during SARS and H5N1, North America during swine flu, and there's ongoing talk about a H7N9 outbreak.

I wasn't hating the deck until it got to sports.... Other than hokey and curling, is Canada known for sports?  And basketball could arguably be considered invented by ancient mayans using the cut off the head of your enemy rules.  I'm all for Canadian pride but I would rather have seen the suits themed:  Comedians, Magicians, Atheletes and Scientists and then make the Jokers a Hockey Player and a Curling throw...  I think that would have drawn a much larger audience.  Just my opinion, and we all know what opinions are like...
Ice hockey, curling, women's soccer/football. Not the first thing to come to mind, but there's also skiing and skeleton.

It kind of goes with the name of the deck, really - the use of the plague doctor image.  I did a little Wikipedia reading on it and it's actually quite an interesting subject.  Since in times of plague it was believed that "bad air" was the cause of the illness, the "beak" mask was used as a sort of primitive gas mask, with air holes at the bottom and straw mixed with aromatic spices, flowers, vinegar sponges, etc. were stuffed into the middle to act as a primitive (and entirely ineffective) filtration device.  The air may have smelled better (or more vinegary) but it did nothing to keep the germs away - something people of the era didn't know existed.  Medical doctors were often NOT used as plague doctors - the attrition rate of plague doctors was EXTREMELY high, and people with absolutely no medical training were often hired to take the position, lured by payments several times that of what a regular physician would earn.  Furthermore, they were hired by the local governments and thus ministered to the wealthy as well as the poor.  That stick they carried was not so much used to beat away plague-infected people as it was for examinations and the removal of a patient's or corpse's clothing - supposedly they could even detect a pulse using one.
Is Pesta going to show up?

Thanks for your backing Rob! and for helping further explain for others here at aethercards, greatly appreciated.

As Rob said, just 8 days left.
Will we reach the Warrior Card Armour funding?...well, a lot can happen in 8 days and I'm doing my best to give it my all.

If any of you would like to help out and spread the word as we're on the this last stretch, that would be incredible.

Thanks so much to all of you who've already backed Empire!
I always wondered IF this day would come, and thanks to you guys, it's almost here.
Finally sorted out my finances enough to pledge.

Excel for now.

I might end up doing something with Microsoft Access later this month.

Picking ones with a proven track record helps a lot too.

Other times, it depends on how lucky you are (funding, product development issues, creator commitment etc).
