Is there a way to place an attached image inline in the post (rather than just at the bottom)?

You can if you resize the image using width= and hight= adjusters. I've been trying to do something similar myself. This is the best I've come up with.
Example of use with PCF banner. (http://www.aethercards.com/pcf-name.png)
Note: If you use this in conjunction with a link on the image, clicking the linked image will cause it to resize. Maybe it will get the job done for what you're wanting to do.
Here's the code I used for it without the opening bracket.
img width=100 height=25]ImageUrlGoesHere[/img]

I usually advise against using inline image posting. The problem with it is that if at any point in time that image is deleted or moved, there goes the image in the post. I've seen so many really good posts, including one excellent one on design, get eviscerated because the image links were broken. If you attach the image instead, while it isn't inline with the post, it doesn't vanish because of a broken link.

CAVEAT: Unless you're posting imagery in the CARD CULTURE Bullpen. Then please use inline. Reason being, we're all restricted to uploading a file under 1mg when attaching a file.
We want high res imagery for CC, certainly larger than 1mg. Go ahead and inline the imagery so you're not restricted to the size. Hope that makes more sense.
Let me know if you have any questions.

DOUBLE CAVEAT: Lee can do it, too, because he posts the images to his own server, linking to them from there! The odds of him just disappearing are smaller, though ask me that in fifty years and the answer will probably be different - but then again, so will this medium...

So the only way to do what the original question asked was the way I demonstrated? I'm also curious if there is another way , a better way, it could be a very big help.

Nope, that's pretty much it. Is that way terrible or something? The height/width part can be left out, I think - it'll simply display whatever the native resolution of the image is.
We use a similar method for embedding video, but for the moment, only admins can embed video. It's something we hope to add in the near future.

Testing if Lee has configured the board to accept .jpeg attachments.
