Personally, i'm in for 2 decks right now. The international prices are pretty steep, though justified by USPS' upcoming price rise. Very excited!

These USPS price hikes are ridiculous. I recently shipped a single deck of cards to Australia and it was around $10. You would think in today's global economy the prices would be much better.

Andy

Guess where i live? ;) Yeah. shipping shit hole that is Australia. I just spent over $30 shipping 3 decks to the UK. Granted it was with tracking and a faster delivery time but regardless, absolutely ridiculous.

On topic: Chris, what kind of stretch goals are you looking at?

Playing Card Plethora / Re: What are your buying "Rules"
« on: October 10, 2013, 06:03:51 AM »
If i genuinely like a deck, ill buy it. I dont have any hard, set in stone rules.

Though after recent discussions with a fellow collector friend, i have taken his advice in not buying anything during the night. There really is some psychological truth in that we make more rash decisions during the wee hours of the night when our brains are tired. I literally convinced myself to buy a few lucite cases one night at 1am. I decided to take the advice of not buying at night just for te hell of it, and sure enough, i had absolutely no desire to buy the lucite cases when i woke up the next morning. It was such an apparent and distinctive change in decision i laughed at myself. Really, if youre up late at night, bored as hell and genuinely convince yourself its a good idea to buy some expensive shit, playing card related or not, try going to sleep and see if you change your mind in the morning. A bit off topic but it was the best advice i had heard in a while and i really suggest you guys try it.

No worries Chris, glad you could pop in. Dont hesitate to keep us updated on your latest court cards etc. We have many enthusiastic designers and people experienced in KS in general that will definitely be able to provide you with constructive comments and suggest possible improvements. While youre here, feel free to take a look around at the other threads. Every kickstarter project related to playing cards is pretty much covered here, you will be amazed with the depth of material contained here!

Enjoy your stay :)

Chris Ovdiyenko, the creator of the Calaveras playing cards, has just launched his new project on Kickstarter, called the Oracle playing cards. Project goal of $20,000.

Introduction directly taken from the project's page:

Quote
A NEW deck of USPCC playing cards based on the spiritualist movement.

Talking boards, spirit photography, seances, ectoplasm, and levitating tables—the spiritualist movement has a rich history. I want to capture some of that history in a deck of USPCC playing cards.

The spiritualist movement grew out of mesmerism—which is what hypnosis used to be called. But with so much loss of life with the civil war, the spanish flu, and WWI, spiritualism became the hope for many across generations to contact more than the subconscious mind. It was a chance to reach their loved ones who had passed on. Many spiritualists believed they were able to reach "through the veil" and contact the spirit world.

Considered by some to be at best an interesting parlor distraction, by others as outright fraud, still many more viewed it as a chance to find solace, comfort, and closure to those whose lives meant the most and who's absence was unbearable. In disguise, Mary Todd Lincoln went to a spirit photographer and captured an image of her with her late husband. It's also rumored that she held as many as eight seances in the White House. Arthur Conan Doyle was a devout spiritualist (despite the analytical and deductive reasoning of his most famous protagonist). Houdini's wife held seances for years after her husband promised before his death to find a way to contact her if a way was there to be found.

All this history has for me added a lot of meaning and depth to this project. I hope you find it as interesting as I do ;)

Early bird prices:
1 deck: $11 (int shipping +$7) Limited to 200 backers
2 decks: $20 (int shipping + $12) Limited to 200 backers

Normal prices:
1 deck: $15
2 decks: $25

Initial impressions: I am extremely impressed with this deck. Ouija boards aren't my cuppa tea but the artwork execution is done superbly. (Pictures attached below). The tuck box is also very appealing and i can already expect a high quality matte texture/embossing tuck box reminiscent to the Ultimate deck by Stranger and Danger.

Personally, i'm in for 2 decks right now. The international prices are pretty steep, though justified by USPS' upcoming price rise. Very excited!

∞Breaking New Ground∞

Alien Ink has been there first in many ways on KS:

∞ 1st to print a deck with pips based on objects other than the standard set. (Planets, Flowers etc)

∞ 1st to offer full function Mini decks with full color tucks and cardistry finish

∞ 1st to offer Plastic Decks as add-ons to a paper deck

∞ 1st to offer decks signed in UV ink

This project is no different.

This will be the first successful Kickstarter deck with no images shown.

There's something seriously wrong with this company. Buyer beware.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Seasons V1 & V2 - What's the Diff?
« on: October 09, 2013, 12:23:37 PM »

Don't mean to hijack your thread Fred, but I have to ask.........what's the difference? I was just about to pick up a set this week for $20 (These do say Platinum Series)

There's minimal difference between V1 and V2 (Platinum). V1, obviously the first edition, had gold instead of the silver contained in the V2s. The V2s were created due to the popularity of the V1s, and are actually 'an improvement' as the V2s feature embossing and foiling that the V1 never had. The V2s also have some metallic inking on the silver areas on the deck (e.g. peacock joker). Card wise, the V2s are 'better' and cheaper, but definitely not as collectable as the V1s.

I usually don't shell out extra moolah for such minimal differences, but Seasons are one of my favourite decks and i really feel the desire to obtain a V1 collector's set, at acceptable prices with international shipping included, of course (:

$20 usd shipping included is a neat deal on the V2 set (I assume you live in USA?). Don't hesitate to pick them up, im sure you wont be disappointed. Combined with the second to none custom 'standard' courts and beautiful peacock aces, the back designs of the two decks in the set do not simply have an inverse relationship. Check it out for yourself (:

Trading statuses updated! All trades have been shipped!

Will update ISO list soon. Most desperately looking for a V1 Seasons set! Help me and ill birth your children. xoxo

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Full custom or Semi custom?

After receiving a disappointing deck from D&D. I got to thinking about designers doing full custom decks as opposed to just a custom backs, Jokers, and Ace of Spades.

With designers like Jackson, Paul, Randy and several others on KS doing full custom decks. I would think that in general people are going to start expecting this on all custom decks. Do you believe this is going to affect big players like E, T11, D&D, and others going forward? Are their designers going to have to do more in the future, or will they be able to rest on there names?

No disrespect to Paul at all (I love his decks), but they are not full custom. You can argue that subjectively they are as they are redrawn/recoloured etc but that does not equate entirely custom. I personally think Uusi is very high on top of that list of creating beautiful custom decks.

On topic, the October deck was definitely a huge let down. It's not false advertising, but im sure a lot of customers were expecting 12 custom courts instead of 4... Kickstarter decks in general are more of 'conversational artwork' that just happens to be on a deck of playing cards. The entirely custom trend is definitely blooming right now, I think the big companies will definitely take inspiration from these decks to an extent, but their major product lines will still have normal looking court cards (By normal, i mean courts that closely resemble the traditional faces, so anywhere between Theory11's recoloured standard courts, to Ellusionist's modified court patterns and to Dan and Dave's simplified courts. I even consider the Season's court cards (which are my favourite) to be entirely custom but 'standard' as the casual spectator will recognise them as playing cards instead of something crazy like Randy's beautiful Imperial).

All this leads me to my point in that the big companies will not transverse too far into completely custom courts, as their major audience are cardists/magicians/performers that basically REQUIRE non-suspicious looking court cards to perform their tricks without a suspecting audience. Though, i think these companies will slowly integrate more customisation into their courts to make them more competitive in the ever so changing market. I really hope they eventually reach the level set by the Seasons deck, but that may be a bit too much wishful thinking as it would take a lot more labour hours (thus money) to create ENTIRELY custom courts like Seasons than a simple 30minute recolouring session.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Jackson to do Sherlock Holmes
« on: October 08, 2013, 12:05:16 PM »

No problem. I'm designing one complete court set that will featured on all three decks. The Holmes and Baker Street Editions will have the exact same faces. However the Moriarty Edition will have the same design but with more eviiil color schemes and metallic silver in place of red for the suite colors. I have had thoughts of designing an entire new court set for the Moriarty Edition that are nothing but Sherlock Holmes Villains. That will most likely be a stretch goal, but I would really like to do that cuz it sounds like a blast.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the clarification Jackson. Very excited! I think that stretch goal will become a reality if you set it as anything under $100,000. Really would be something to be extra proud of to create whole new faces for a change instead of a different back design and recoloured pips!

Any chance us biddies at aethercards can get an early/exclusive preview on some of the other cards/courts? (: Or maybe even the draft link to Kickstarter? Though that may be too much wishful thinking.. =p

Looks like i have to get back in the prostitution business again.. sigh Jackson why must you do this! =p

Following quote also from Tuckcase.com:

The project will feature three decks - The Baker Street Edition, The Holmes Edition and The Moriarty Edition (as seen below), one completely unique court set featured on all three card decks. Jackson will also be making a limited edition set available for backers.

I'm not sure if the above implies the same 'completely unique court set' (12 different court faces) featured on all 3 decks or 3 different 'completely unique court set' ( 36 DIFFERENT FREAKING COURTS!) featured on the 3 versions. Can you remove the ambiguity please, Jackson?

I love the Moriarty edition!

62
Its a pretty neat deck. There are a lot of improvements i would personally make but its not half bad. Though the jack of spades is so out of place its not even funny.. Queens are horrific. Im gonna pledge for one and enjoy the ride. Depeding on changes to the back/courts etc i might pull out or continue wth my 1 deck pledge at the end.

EDIT: Wow just saw the faceless pips.. Prime example of making something worse by adding unecessary shit. The tuckbox is quite nice though.

Lol I wouldn't know about that, I don't drink lol it's just a taste I don't think I can get use to when drinking it .. Tea and hot chocolate for me (not mixed of course) .. Had a lovely lemon & ginseng tea yesterday at work. I wana try an iced tea, just the thought of it sounds wrong though.

I stopped drinking hot chocolate when i was like 10.. haha! I do have to admit i crave Milo and milk (prefer cold over hot) from time to time.. Iced tea does not capture the true taste of premium tea at all.. it's really just a novelty drink with tea extract and a shit tonne of sugar. Still nice though! I assume Lipton ice tea is available in most countries? It's the 'standard' of ice tea here in Australia, much like how Coke/Pepsi is the standard of Cola.

The mocha was just one of the reasons why I don't like it. Tried a latte, wasn't for me. I just don't like coffee. Also, how can you lot drink an espresso, u might as well just chew on a few coffee beans :p .. It's weird, I can eat coffee flavoured chocolate and I eat tiramisu (without the alcohol included). But I won't eat tea based foods but I love drinking it lol there's this green tea ice cream we serve at some venues, was an aquired taste, not a fan.

Fair enough =p

In regards to espresso, and all coffee really, it depends on the beans, how well they're ground (so many factors contribute to this.. Like bean age, temperature etc..do your own research if you're interested). Good coffee has a very velvety and smooth taste. Not that bitter dry dirt shit you're used to with instant espresso/short blacks.. The taste and texture requires getting used to. I used to hate the taste when i was a kid but nowadays it's become a part of my lifestyle (probably explains my high tolerance to caffeine =p). I personally dont particularly like espressos, but when my buddies used to get together to take shots it's really just for the act rather than the taste. Think of doing pre-drinks with shots of vodka. When i first started drinking vodka i also hated the taste, but after a few nights out both your tastebuds/stomach get used to it. I'm now also pretty fucking tolerant to alcohol haha, i take it down pretty smoothly and don't get drunk easily.

I do barista work from time to time depending on th venue I'm working at, still hate coffee though. I tried a mocha once, ruined th chocolate taste for me

You cant say you hate coffee from trying a mocha, Nurul! Mocha is terrible. Coffee with chocolate= versatility. Versatility= compromise. Good for some great for none. Grab a more traditional latte, cappuccino or flat white etc next time. And also make sure you try proper freshly ground first rather than shitty instant coffee..

I'm incredibly caffeine tolerant and often drink coffee before i hit the hay =p

I worked with a Ukrainian guy who had to drink a double espresso to go to sleep  :-\

I'd like his number! Haha. When i was underage (15/16) we used to line up espresso shots at work and play the drinking game betting on how hot the next chick that walked in would be. Now it's just all alcohol, sloooooots and dat dere green gra$$.

Project funded with $12,369. Here's the latest update:

Quote
First, we want to say THANK YOU! Without you, none of this would have been possible!

We will send out the surveys tomorrow. Devonte and I have been working hard already to put everything together and get it done early. We are already in process with USPCC and the card clips are being set up as we speak.

The rest will be done in the next week or two, which means everything may be done sooner then expected.

Thank you all for the support, our next deck should be up on the next week or two.

We may also done some decks off of kickstarter so be sure to join us at http://www.system6magic.com/

Join our email list at the bottom of the page.

If your into magic, we have some new releases. If your into cards, some decks may be released just through us.

Thank you all again, speak this week!

Michael

Emphasis added. Really hope creators would take more time and effort to perfect current decks (and write up updates with proper spelling and grammar..) than to pump out new decks. Though I'll hold my judgment until they launch their new project.

Congratulations to System 6 Magic and all Believe Playing card backers.

That's why I've kept my thoughts here. I tend to have faith in people to a fault, so until I see a postcard in the mail with his mug on it smiling on a Hawaiian beach will I finally be like "Bad man, man bad!".

Don't give him ideas! =p
I'm not sure if you can be bothered to see the comments in his previous failed attempt at kickstarting this deck.. but if you follow everything through + the comments on this thread you'll realise how far he is willing to go to hide a lie. Without hesitation, he consistently attempts to cover up his tracks with more lies. It's actually quite an amusing read in hindsight. I don't care how much people 'change' after such deceitful acts. If they were once willing to lie about something, there is nothing stopping them to do it again. Especially when $13,000 is up for grabs.

Cy has lost a lot of people's trust on here and UC regardless of how this unfolds. I'm sure some of us secretly, deep down, wish it did indeed turn out to be a scam just so we could say "we told you so, bitch." =p Evil, I know! Haha. I honestly hope everything turns out to be okay for your sake.

Fuck water.

Yeah fuck water, that shit's too mainSTREAM amirite? Always hydratin' n shit.

I used to drink about 5 a day, but have found that I have lapsed more into drinking coffee nowadays as the instant stuff is easier to prepare.

Ew instant coffee... I swear that's the devil's stuff. We have a mid-top tier coffee machine at home. I used to work at a cafe last year when i was in high school, so i was trained as a barista. I make at least 1-2 cups of coffee a day it's pretty much a daily routine. I'm incredibly caffeine tolerant and often drink coffee before i hit the hay =p

That's kind of a red flag. If this indeed is going where it looks, then that last donation makes sender. Not a bad investment, pledge $600 of your own to make $11k. Maybe against all odds we will see a deck instead of tire tracks.

I don't think there's a strong indication of a scam as of now. If you browse through the previous pages you'll know that i absolutely despise Cy.. But from what i can see with the updates, it looks normal, as of now. Be patient and wait it out. There's a certain period of time (a few months i think) in which you'll be able to raise a dispute via Amazon/Your credit card company to get a full refund. Don't be so quick to come to a conclusion as this may cause a flurry of panic among the other backers and shit'll take off before you know it.

I really hope everything turns out well for you and the other backers' sake! (:

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Court Cards: Madison vs Split Spades
« on: October 05, 2013, 08:14:11 AM »
As Don has stated, DB's design of the court faces blend in more, appearing more natural as compared to the rounders. All in all, to me the rounders deck showed no originality at all, easily taking elements from jerrys and wynns combining it with the changing the faces as in Blaines decks. We can disagree on the rounders, you like them, i think they are just meh, but we both hate this deck.

Sorry Don for the off-tracking, i dont think there will be anymore.

Are you saying that the Rounders would look better if they retained the standard court colours like te Split Spades? Thats ridiculous. The custom court colours were done for a reason. If you personally like the split spades thats fine (i do as well), but dont go around saying that the execution of the Rounders is subpar simply because they are not your style. The only comparable thig between rounders and split spades are the courts, in which the rounders are at worst, on par with the split spades.

On topic: it'll be interesting to see the custom courts for the Anarchy deck. Does anyone want to bet that the only thing that whll change will be the colours? :)

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Court Cards: Madison vs Split Spades
« on: October 04, 2013, 10:54:50 PM »
As much as I don't like this deck, the response between this and the rounders deck is heaven and earth, sorry I think this deck deserves all the flak, but the rounders and fontaines should as well. Sure the court cards are altered but not in a particularly good way, the look rough and unfinished, especially if you take a db deck and put them next to each other, same idea different execution level. Plus Madison already had his logo before doing the rounders he didn't create one just for it.

To me the greatest and perhaps only significant difference is that the rounders had Madison behind it, and the fontaines had zach mueller, sorry I'm no fanboy and I'm not calling you a hypocrite but really the decks aren't too different, the artistic norms you mentioned aren't lacking from this deck, whether it's copied or not.

Your response assumes i put Fontaines and Rounders on the same level. They are not, at least in my honest opinion. Yes both decks are riding heavily on the creator's fame, (Keep in mind i dislike both Zach and Daniel, Zach's repetitive jokes in expose are heavily overdone and very predictable and I think Daniel's image is completely artificial.. but lets not get into that) but in terms of design, they are also not on the same level. As Alex mentioned before, good minimalistic design also incorporates depth. Though i disagree with him that adding gradient would make this deck better, his point is stil valid in that depth is required for overall completeness. Rounders achieve this by the very distinct contrast between black and white, combined with a deeper shade of red for the pips/courts. Everything fits the theme quite well (though i dislike the jokers.. but oh well you gotta give artists SOME artistic freedom, right? =p). Fontaines on the other hand lacks depth. The back design, being a minimalist myself, i find very attractive. However, all that bullshit Zach spews about purposively keeping the courts standard is just an easy way out to not perfect and complete the deck, as it will sell regardless.

In your comment you imply that DB's decks are on a different execution level. I'm going to assume you don't mean the back design.. because it would be foolish to compare the two as they are completely different in theme and style, and i don't take you as a dumb individual. I assume you're talking about the court cards. I find this humorous because like the Rounders, the DB courts are also incomplete. I have the deck right in front of me (Refer to the 1st picture below). Comparing the custom courts in both decks (Refer to the 2nd picture: Split spades on top, Rounders on bottom); you can see that the Rounders' colour scheme is consistent with the overall theme, whereas the Split Spades are simply using standard colours. Comparing the custom faces, the Rounders win again as the line work is more intricate and look less 'bushy'. This isnt subjective. This is just a general objective observation. I simply cannot grasp how you use the split spades as an example to imply that the Rounders are comparably poorer in execution, wherein the Rounders courts are at worst on par with the Split Spades and arguably even better. Please keep Fontaines out of this. That is not the centre of my argument.

Again, sorry for the long explanation. I'd love to hear what you have to say to this.

Playing Card Plethora / Court Cards: Madison vs Split Spades
« on: October 04, 2013, 12:54:30 PM »
Fred do you like the madison rounders deck ?

I think the Rounders is quite an attractive deck (Note the specific use of the word 'attractive'). From a minimalistic design perspective, Rounders is very well put together. There is so much technique involved in minimalistic/abstract work. This is why you often hear people/artists say that abstract art, though 'simple', is one of the hardest to master. There is actual reasoning and artistic justification/technique in placing the two logos exactly where they should be, and exactly how far they are. Too close and the focal point is muddled and balance is dismissed, too far and the eye/our attention would float too much to the edges/corners of the card back. The back seems easy and simple to achieve, but in actual fact there's a lot of artistic norms that one should follow to create such a simple yet aesthetic design. The Madison logo is also, in my opinion, quite attractive. Everything flows wonderfully and the mix of hard and soft (straight and curved) lines balance nicely.

The custom courts are beautiful (I especially like the London chick Madison works with.. I apologise for forgetting her full name). However one criticism that i have is that the deck is incomplete; as not all of the court faces are custom (Jack of Diamonds for example). Even if Madison only has like 9 real friends that he can put on his deck.. i honestly think he shouldve at least chosen someone else for his artist to depict on the remaining courts, instead of using standard USPCC faces. This incompleteness greatly depreciates the artistic value of the deck in my opinion. It's just one of those things that is so 'simple' to fix but is instead ignored.

Overall, I do like the deck. I have one myself and have from time to time admired the courts quite extensively. I hope you didnt ask me whether or not i liked the Rounders so that if i said yes, you would call me a hypocrite for hating on this shitty Anarchy deck. You may see an almost identical back design, but these two decks arent even comparable. It's not even apples to oranges.. it's apples to sloth fecal matter.

I have a very strong personal opinion (Which probably explains my lack of reputation =p). None of my comments are intended to insult anyone or cause any harm. I hope people can objectively comment on their own thoughts instead of being affected by other opinions/subjective perspectives.

Sorry for writing a 'Don' response. :)
tl:dr, y yes raunders r noice. <3

Im glad i wasn't the only one. I don't usually go out of my way to bash on other people, but this one really hit me in the spot. Directly quoted from the first update to the project:

These cards have to be manufactured. It would be a crime against nature not to release this deck.

This is a prime 'notsureifsrs' example.

Though in a more recent update, the creator has taken feedback and decided to take a swing at custom courts, which is definitely a move for the better. With that being said, my initial impressions are obvious and i doubt my opinions will change. We'll see how everything pans out. Best of luck to the creator
