Playing Card Plethora / Playing Cards & the Military
« on: July 26, 2014, 05:36:05 PM »
It seems to be rather well known that armed forces have used playing cards to help soldiers learn to identify naval and aircraft. (I hope to collect more myself.)

In more recent years, playing cards have been used for another special purpose: Historic preservation.

I was lucky to find one such former government-issue deck. This one is specific to Afghanistan and I know Iraq ones exist as well. Cards inform soldiers to avoid buying antiquities, prevent the destruction of archaeologically significant sites, protect museums, leave important items in situ for later study, etc.

I will attach a few photos here. I apologize for their poor quality. (They were done a while ago and quickly.) I can re-snap. Just let me know.

Sorry! I now see there is a separate thread for showing newly acquired decks.

Warning: Major geekiness here  ;D

In honor of Apollo 11th's recent 45th Anniversary, I figured I would share this deck for fun.

I don't have many novelty decks, but this one caught my eye as it matches another hobby quite well :)

They were purchased at a planetarium, but you can probably get them online too.

I wouldn't use them for cardistry as their handling is poor. The graphics are really high quality, though.

I funded them. I really like their style. However, despite the awesome design, the quality was lacking. Externally, the graphics are pixelated. On the cards, there are some issues with color consistency.

I have gotten so many complements on my Pocono deck. The colors are bold, yet the designs are really balanced. They make good subjects for Instagram photos too :) Yep, I love this deck.

Hello,

While on a recent trip, I found a really cool deck on display at the Milwaukee Public Museum. Here is photo of the cards themselves and then a bit about their history. I bet it would be tricky to shuffle those...

I wish to combine in an article or a booklet, most of the backs which were used by several us playing card makers.

While I am new to collecting, I am a museum studies grad who loves historical research. Please let me know if you ever need help researching something.

Best of luck with your project.

I think the Massa deck had that.  They had a one-way back with suit designs throughout.

Yeah, that deck seems to have the 4 suits going along in a line on the top of the tuck flap. Very nice.

Wow! That is the mother of all DIY electronics. Someone should send him cards to scan :)

Thanks for sharing

TechArt faces are designed for casino use, specifically at blackjack.
Thanks for all the info, Don!

Watches too! :)

I found this on eBay (no, I am not the seller) and thought it was really cool.

Hello Everyone,

I was so pumped to find my Kings Wild Independence decks in the mail yesterday. I took some photos that I will share here. Even though I mistakenly thought that the Crown deck would have all British face cards and the Continental would have all American face cards (they both have the same mix), the amazing detail inside the tuck boxes more than made up for it :)

While I think I like the Crown deck a little more, I couldn't help, but hint at my allegiance in the George vs George photo ;)

Even though it's rather simple, I really like the suits along the box edges. Are you familiar with any other decks w/ the same design? Thanks :)

"Adaptive aesthetics" -- a very cool concept and one that can be applied in many different areas. Thanks for the educational review!

I came across these as I was trying to find more info. on specific card terminology. I bet you never thought of a card at the microscopic level (well, unless you're pondering the air cushion magic).

Back No. 207 wouldn't exactly be considered politically correct today, would it? Now, that'd be an interesting topic--former mainstream decks that wouldn't be sold today. I'm new, so perhaps there even is one already. Great original photo of the Bees!

What advantage is there in having that larger border like in the "Tech-Art" decks?

Card guys and gals,

Thanks for having me as part of this forum! I come from a long line of card players. My grandmother was very instrumental in fostering my playing card interest. I never leave the house without a deck of cards. Dealing with some annoying health stuff, I now find that I have more time to learn both tricks and games. I've also really gotten into all the new decks being made out there. (I recently made a $34 profit on the sale of an antique store deck find and used it all to buy new ones. :)

So yeah, see you out there!
