April’s Big News: The Freakshow Deck

Who doesn’t love the idea of an old-fashioned carnival? We’re proud to introduce some of the behind-the-scenes sketches and concept art for the Bicycle® Brand’s latest endeavor: the Freakshow Deck, due on shelves in July 2013.

The court cards all feature favorite freakshow characters like the bearded lady, sword swallower, a contortionist, flame-breather, and more. The tuck alludes to the red and yellow of a gigantic striped circus tent.

Look for the Freakshow Deck at ShopBicycleCards.com this summer!

Saw this at club 808. Can someone get the pictures my computers being dumb.

Do you guys even read this? Like I could have the meaning of life here and I doubt you would know it.

Thank you CBJ, I was posting and realized I could not get the photos. So what do you guys think of the deck?

  • Ugh, I wish I had money for THAT deck!
Based solely on those pictures I'm gonna love this deck! I look forward to the release! I think a circus theme fits cards well and these do the theme justice.

What are you talking about, Don? ::)

In all seriousness though, there have been plenty of circus-themed decks before Freakshow and Sawdust. Heck, there's already been a circus transformation deck.

I was referring to how these decks seem to come in cycles, like when there's suddenly a bunch of monster movies or killer insect movies coming out in a wave.  We had a "black deck" wave, followed with "dark themes/skeletons", eventually we had a huge number of steampunk designs out all at once, and the current wave is zombies.  I'm thinking that this could be the start of a new trend, where suddenly all at once there will be a handful of circus-themed decks coming out together.

A sure sign of a theme getting played out is when USPC releases an in-house version - at least in most cases.  Look at the Alchemy/Anne Stokes decks, Bicycle Steam Punk decks in brass and silver, the Zombie deck, etc.

It's all speculation on my part, really...

Very true. We also had the Cthulhu wave and we're currently in a presidential/U.S. theme-influenced wave (Lincoln, Founders, Federal, etc.).

And of course, there's also the theme trend "collisions", like Steampunk Cthulhu and Pixel Lincoln!

No no, it will be steampunk zombies versus circus Cthulu.  That hasn't been done yet.

That would definitely make it a freak deck. And I'm praying to all higher powers that no designer peeks in this thread for a design idea.

As I was searching for new deck ideas I'm glad I came across this thread:  Lovecraft Zombies with Steampunk body parts which were applied to them while they were once alive and working in a circus, but as it has been many years since the outbreak most are just skeleton and sinue.  Is that the deck you are looking for next?   ;)

For extra added gear-stripping, the steampunk zombies (spades) and circus Cthulus (clubs) could be joined by pixelated American founders (hearts) with bikers  drawn to look like currency (diamonds).  Reward levels should include smelling salts and artisanal bacon.

If anyone actually makes that monstrosity, please send me a deck!  (So I can have 52 coasters.)

Addendum: Actually, Monstrosity wouldn't be a half-bad name for it.
