Last time I discussed the subject with Bill Kalush, he stated that the original prototype Zen decks he gave away with the NOC v3 bricks were never to go on sale.  They're good decks but not the finished product.  THIS, however, is the finished product.

The box is awesome and all but I especially like the backs on these.  Any idea as to when we will get a peek at the fronts/faces/courts ?

I think the ZenPure is the more minimal one.

LOVE the look thus far though. I'll definitely pick some up.

You are correct, sir - Zen Pure bears more of a resemblance to brown Wynn's and the Madison Something-or-Others...I've lost track of all the designs and names, they blend together in my head like a blur.

Nice backs, and I love the red foil on satin black! I'm really enjoying the side tucks as well, they are really growing on me. Don, do you know if the faces are custom, or standard?

I saw them on a visit to CARC and don't recall seeing custom faces - but then again, I was looking at prototypes and not the finished product you're seeing now.  As far as that's concerned, my information is useless.  I'm hoping to get in there this week before I leave for a trip, so if I learn anything new, I'll let you know.

Nice minimal back of card.  Foil and emboss one element on your tuck box is my only suggestion.  Seems like the thing to do today...

I received an email about this earlier. Looks like the the Zen version of the limited Imps Gamesters - or vice versa - not sure which was designed first. Perhaps they were developed together....

The truth is both decks were totally independent of each other.  When I was visiting NYC late last year I was showing Bill the artwork for the Gamesters & Limited Edition Gamesters and expressed what I had in mind for them with the gold and silver foils.  He said it was a great idea and then showed me (and gave me) a deck of the Zen Pure Golds...after seeing it in person, I knew I was making the right decision.

This style has become more common in recent years. A lot of people call it a "Casino Style".
Here are few well known examples

Brown Wynns

Madison Rounders

Jerry's Nugget

I wouldn't call the Jerry's Nugget deck a "recent" anything!

But yes, this is a style that originated with casinos and is pretty popular with collectors today.  I get the feeling that it was the Brown Wynn deck that kicked this off as part of the modern collecting boom - Theory11 had it as a rare deck for a while.

@Rob - The minimalist deck is here to stay.  I think you can even call it a category.   I heard something about fanboys...

It's not REALLY a minimalist deck.  It's only the back designs on all of these decks that are simple and/or minimal - in most of the cases described here, the faces are standard or close to it.

I think everyone here knows I really like the previous Zen decks. I'll definitely be picking some lots of these up, hopefully in all three flavors. :D

It wasn't the style so much that struck me as more than coincidental. Both decks black/gold and red/silver. The Imps production moving from USPCC to EPCC. The announcement of the Zens a few days after funding closed for the limited Gamesters. I went in for both versions of the Gamesters on Kickstarter, so they were fresh in my mind. When I received the announcement about the Zens, I saw the photos and thought "Wait a minute. This looks familiar." :)

If you compare the faces, however, you'll notice differences right away.  The Zen Pure decks have the EPCC standard face while the Gamesters are more optimized for playing Texas Hold 'Em or some other poker game where it's common to simply peek at the cards in your hand rather than take them up off the table.  The Gamesters have four indices on each card - two standard and two mini-indices in the opposite corners from the standard.

As stated, there's no development coinciding with each other, etc.  They just happen to be styled after a popular style of casino poker cards.  Additionally, before the black Zen/Zen Pure decks, there were the red prototype Zen and Zen Pure decks, which started seeing limited distribution as a rare premium deck from CARC perhaps a year or so ago.  While the reds were never offered for sale, there was a small number of them that were released into the public - and still are, if you buy a brick of black Zen Pure, as it comes with one deck of the red prototype Zen Pure.
