Could this be the earliest Russell & Morgan letterhead?  It dates from 1888 and introduces the Russell & Morgan price list for that year.  It is done in sepia with the iconic Russell & Morgan tiger.  One of the many pieces to be offered in the Potter & Potter "Devil's Picturbook" auction May 31st & June 1st.  Does anyone know of an earlier letterhead?

This is the earliest one I am aware of [1886] -  likely older ones around.

If I recall, companies often created letterheads with the first three digits of the year pre-printed early in that decade, in order to get the most use of that design through the decade.  While the letter is dated 1888, the actual letterhead design, and perhaps even the paper, may have been made as early as 1880 or 1881.  The same would also hold true for Tom's letter from 1886 as well.
