The Conversation Parlor / Re: Interesting Thought...
« on: June 19, 2015, 12:50:17 AM »
I hope that's just an add card or a joker.  Otherwise a whole deck is hosed.  If that card has really gone to Reno then to your school yard it has had a good life.
School kids love to use decks of cards.  While many are too young to learn a profitable life skill (like poker) I have seen a lot of battles of War.  This last school year I donated ten bricks of decks to the school I work at.  Most of the decks have worn out already, I going to have to donate more before the new school year starts.
Hey Lee, on a side note, the longest lasting decks in the hands on school children have been the Fournier 605s.  Go figure  :)

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Re: 1988 Adobe Playing Card Info
« on: May 29, 2015, 09:46:15 PM »
That is a great find !  I have met many collectors who would love to add an Adobe deck to their collection.  While not a deck of "classic" or common design, it is very cool and quite rare.  Tom's suggestion that it may be well worth more that $100 mint, seems to be correct, if not conservative.  If the deck is currently in mint condition, take good care of it.

For years (5 or 6) I purchased the Ultra-Pro cases for my collection of paper and plastic decks.  They were usually the perfect size although a few of the odd sized decks wouldn't fit.  I sometimes had to add some plastic shims to keep some of the decks from rattling around.  Buying them in case lots of 100 was a lot more economical.  2 years ago they decided to stop making the correct size.  I sent emails to the dealer and manufacturer begging them to make them again.  Ultra-Pro absolutely refused claiming the market wasn't large enough.  Perhaps if enough of us send emails they might reconsider.  I hope so, because, after lots of research, the Ultra-Pro cases were the best that I have found.  I did try the Caragails cases, I probably have 30 or so in my collection.  But the Ultra-Pro seemed to fit better.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Question about Casino Decks

These are great for the weekly poker game, since they are mostly broken in already.  I have lots of these (you can even find them cheaper that $1/box) for playing around with.  They are not collectable nor do they match the level of Artistry found in decks Retail decks.  If you find some without the hole drilled in the middle or the corners cut off, all the better.  Have fun with these decks but most would not consider them part of their "collection".

I do keep track of costs when I enter new acquisitions in my database.  I also add the costs of storing and protecting (plastic cases, temperature and humidity controls, display cases...) each deck.  I have considered seperately insuring my collection, but I currently don't have the cash on hand for that.  My current homeowners insurance will cover about a quarter of my collection.   :(

Design & Development / Re: Pounders - a Founders deck parody

Yes, please !!!!!!!!  I always thought it was good artwork, still want some in my hands.

I have to agree with your concern, Josh.  Cello wrappers, being plastic, do off-gas over time.  I have also found many(!) decks where the tuck box or the cards themselves (when the deck is wrapped) are bent from too tight of a wrapper.

8
The JNugs were the absolute worst handling cards we have ever used.  I intend to get rid of them very soon.

In terms of practicality I think that you should include red in as well as black (Inside the outlined gold) for easier identification of the suits. I brought a 'Republic Sultan Deck' to a poker game and damn it was so hard to read the pips that we gave up after the first round!

A great many of the decks designed recently (great or not so great) do not "play well" in a poker game.  The characteristics needed for poker (or other games) are not always congruent with the genius behind card design.  I once tried to put my JNugs into a poker game, they lasted only a single hand.
The Muertos decks are the first Kickstarter decks I have backed since the Federal Series.  The subject matter and design elements speak to me on a different level than other decks.  I may give them away as gifts to friends that hold dear the concept used by these cards. Or perhaps I'll just hang on to them.  To each his own.

Playing Card Plethora / Arrco deck made in Hong kong?
« on: April 26, 2014, 10:30:12 PM »
I just acquired a couple of decks from an estate sale that I am puzzled about.  The decks are paper (non coated) made by Arrco and include the line "Made in Hong Kong" on the AoS and the two Jokers.  The AoS includes the PLA-MOR line as many Arrco decks have.  I thought Arrco decks were good old American cards.  By the way, the backs are a bad photograph of a Tucan bird.  Is this unusual?  I know, it's only a garbage deck,  but I've never noticed the Arrcos Made in Hong Kong before.

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Re: The Case for Congress
« on: March 16, 2014, 01:58:14 PM »
I have a good number of vintage Congress decks in my collection.  While I appreciate the various photos and drawings used to create the backs, I have never thought of them as a better quality than other USPCC decks.  Congress decks also happen to make a large majority of my "garbage" decks.  These are decks that have been "over used" by those that don't wash their hands.   :-[   I was very surprised to find out a couple of years ago that Congress decks used to be the higher quality decks.  I just don't see them that way.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Kings Wild Lucite Cases
« on: March 16, 2014, 11:48:39 AM »
I used to buy the Ultrapro cases by the case lot, both the single deck (5) and the dual deck (100).  The individual plastic box by the case lot, qty 100, drops the price dramatically.  I found the lid does not quite fit tightly, ie. the lid drops off, you have to use a rubber band to keep the lid on.  That wasn't too much of a problem the way I displayed them.    If you are using these boxes for long-term storage beware:: they do not filter out UV light.  You will have to control the environment in other ways.  They also emit a plastic smell that can build up if the boxes are in another container or display case.  You will need to provide for some air flow.

As far as using a box that is more expensive that the deck of cards,  I have figured out that between my (1)protective plastic boxes, (2)display cases, (3)environmental controls, and (4)database costs, a dual deck setup costs me $13.00(USD) above what I paid for it.  That is over the course of 5 years.  A single deck, which is not common for me, costs $10.00(USD) in addition to the deck costs,  That is excepting my garbage decks that don't get any special treatment, they are simply thrown into a box, awaiting disposal.

What's that saying:: Imitation is the sincerest form of flatery.  By the look of the post, this wasn't even a serious attempt.  I do like the thought behind the pips, but the backs look cartoonish.  The post will not even tempt me to back the KS project.  But since I don't back any KS projects,... Oh well.  There may be some that will back it for other reasons, or prerhaps personal likes.  More power to them.  I'll save my money.

I've started porting my Excel spreadsheet into Access.  The spreadsheet got so big that it took too long to scrool down to the bottom, but I also lost the "big picture" and could no longer see any trends or commonalities across the sheet.

You're on the mark again, Don, about Ultra-Pro being one of the best for preservation.  Unfortunatly, they have been cutting back on their product line over the last couple of years.  They decided to cut out the products that I have used.  Ouch.  I'm still looking for replacements at a good price.

Yes Don, it's true that going overboard with dehumidifying will do as much damage to cards as adding water to the environment.  Subtlety is required.  I had to do much research in the library sciences to learn that swings in temperature and humidity do the major harm to card collections.  Temperature swings promote mold, even to shrink wrapped decks.

ATS, be very careful about any plastic sheet protectors or card covers that you purchase.  Some of the plastics produce gasses that will promote molds or other deteriorations of the cards.  I had to dig deep into vendor's specs before I decided how to display parts of my collection in plastics.  Also be careful about any wood varnishes that outgass noxious fumes.

Of some interest, I found that older paper decks that were made without a varnish or finish were only slightly more suseptable to mold and other detriments  than varnished cards.  The cut edges of modern cards are unprotected and can "soak up" the environment.

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Environmental Control for storing older cards
« on: January 29, 2014, 09:44:09 PM »
Is anyone out there concerned about temperature, light, and humidity control for larger collections of older cards?
I use a couple of dehumidifiers near my display cabinets to keep the atmosphere dry.
I also protect my older decks in plastic boxes that are made of lo-gassing uv blocking plastic.

In more than just a few cases I have found that celo wrapping has been so tight that some older decks have warped
over the years (from previous owners).  Has anyone else experienced this or am I just "special"?   :)

That's sweet !!  Those card catalogs are hard to find these days.

"Barrister" style cabinets provide a great way to display parts of a collection.  Use "library" style glass to cut down on the UV rays that can get to the cards.

It's strictly up to the collector's individual tastes and preferences.

It is truely wonderful that we have so many collectors that collect for so many different reasons.  Diversity is good!

Don, congrats on your 12K posts !

Happy new year to all.

In-My-Own-Not-At-All-Humble-Opinion, I must agree with Don.  Twenty years old doesn't seem "vintage" to me.  Being more than half way to "antique" myself, I feel that there have been too many decks produced (and still available) between my birth and 1993 to consider them vintage.  Oh right, that belongs to the rare definition.  But many of the decks produced between my birth and 1993 are not worth collecting due to lack of any artistic value.  Oh right, that belongs to the cr@p definition.  I have always thought of vintage decks as having some sort of intrinsic value, historic/artistic/political...  I guess I just have to wrap my head around the fact that card decks can be both vintage and cr@p, and that I am quite vintage myself and full of ....   :)

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Would YOU try this with your playing cards?
« on: December 20, 2013, 11:17:16 AM »
The banana would have the right skin resistance to clean an old deck of cards.  But the oils that it leaves would probably increase the amount of dirt build-up during use.  Not on a decent deck, thank you.  And the smell....  Not one of my favorites.  Can you imagine performing with banana smelling cards??   I don't think so.  What's next, a grapefruit?  Yeah, put a nice round grapefruit on a rotating spindle and simply pass it over your dirty cards.  The rotating grapefruit will do all of the mechanical cleaning.  And with a fresh citrus scent.  I think I have something there ! ! ! !
