Arcana Playing Cards KS Link

From the creator of Calaveras and Oracle.

Not sure if this is Tarot, but from the image, looks like Tarot-themed playing cards.

It says "Tarot Playing Cards" on the tuck.  Either way, they look promising.

There's actually a French game called "tarot" that's played with a simplified version of a tarot deck.

But I don't think this is it!

Looks to be poker-sized and about the same thickness as a 50-someodd card deck.  Knowing the artist, I'm interested.

Wow, that is so weird 2 nights ago I woke up and sketched an upside-down tree just like the one in the picture, then went back to sleep. Looks really cool.
I love the printing on the inside of the Calaveras Deck.

It is so weird because I don't usually like the overdone "skulls" but on this deck I don't mind it.
The Tarot deck tuck box looks really good though, I can't wait to see the cards.

I like what I see.  It would be nice to introduce the tarot suits back into card play.  Nice theme to have both on the same card.

Hearts & Cups, Diamonds & Coins, Clubs & Staffs, Spades & Swords.

Edit:  Second look.  It looks like he is going with Pentacles instead of coins...

A fairly strange pledge level system? No mixed bricks etc, with a focus on prints?

  • Charm gets you quite far. Guile gets you the rest.
This is a deck idea that deserves a full-blown tarot deck as a stretch goal!

He is talking about a stretch goal for a third deck that would finish out the Major Arcana for both colors and he is looking at possibly having a custom tuck designed to fit the full tarot deck if the project gets there. It's a lofty fund goal but I think he might be able to pull it off.
Kickstarter completely revolutionized the way I waste money.

The people who handle playing cards are always in a world of delicate fingertip technology.

Very impressive looking deck. Usually not a fan of one way backs, but when they're done this well.... I love this.

Tarot designs are usually two-way, but can be one-way more often than poker cards, though not as often as one sees the art backs on many paper bridge decks.

Solid Silver Proof Arcana Coin

One of the advantages of having coins minted (as opposed to molded, don't get me started…) is that I can mint them in solid precious metals. For the first time, I'm proud to offer a SOLID silver version of the Arcana coin. This coin isn't silver plated, it is one troy ounce of solid .999 pure silver. These are "proof coins" and will have with a mirror finish.

I'm on the fence about the expansion pack. It seems like a great idea at the moment but that can also become an instant gratification purchase later. They're being printed by USPCC so there's going to be heaps of them when it's all said and done.

If it was an entire deck, rather than a few gaffs and some expansion cards I think I would probably be all over it. I don't know though. There's definitely some merit to how he's decided to go about getting the expansion cards out to fill the tarot, but there's also the bit that causes trouble for me personally. It's hard to justify spending $20 for a tuck box that I can't pop open and have a game with straight away. Difficult choice for me to make at the moment given so much is due to land on us in a matter of days.

There has been absolutely no slow down in great decks coming and no recovery from the holiday season haha. Kind of does my head in if I think about too much.

That's actually based on a very old print - I've seen it before and it's been used elsewhere as a "Death" card.  Death - the card - isn't supposed to be terribly intimidating, because it doesn't literally represent death.  It represents change - the "death" of one situation resulting in the birth of a different one, in many ways like the natural progression from fall to spring.  At the least, that's my story and I'm sticking to it!  :))

I have to re-examine this project - I might want to up my investment.

Chris is showing us the full Death card in Update 7 of the KS campaign. It looks absolutely stunning in my opinion. Granted I'm not a big tarot guy, most know I have about two handfuls and that's it. My Aunt however is huge on Tarot decks. Don's sum up of the card is right. As a youngster I was never lead to believe the Death card was something to be intimidated by or afraid of, to be honest many death cards come off as being quite comical. Chris has re-imagined the classic Death card in a very striking manner, it's elegant and beautiful while telling the story on the card in a very dramatic way. It's gorgeous, so many wonderful details. Really though all his work on this deck is amazing.

Remember when looking at Tarot cards, every aspect of the image is important to take in. Focusing on one specific of the cards details won't give you the full effect and enjoyment of the card. Example from Update 4 and the King of Cups. There is so much going on here, out of the realm of ordinary that we see the world, that to focus solely on the King is doing a dis service to oneself. Most every Tarot card is full of metaphor the images will represent that for us.
