A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Re: King of Hearts - why the keyboard?
« on: December 14, 2018, 07:46:01 AM »
Thanks for your replies guys.

This is great. I always felt it looked like a keyboard of some sort but was confused by it so was genuinely interested to see what experts thought.

I asked question somewhere else and got the reply ‘cos he’s the suicide king and mentally unstable people are often musically gifted’, which didn’t ring true seeing as we kind of know the suicide thing is more attributed to bad reproduction.

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / King of Hearts - why the keyboard?
« on: December 04, 2018, 11:49:53 AM »
Hoping someone can put me out of my misery and shed some light on this question as it’s been bugging me and I’ve been unable to find anything.

In the more modern Anglo/ Germanic playing cards, why does the King of Hearts sometimes appear to be holding a keyboard?

Is it actually a keyboard of some sort or am I just mis reading the pattern? Or is it a symptom of bad copying in the same way it is theorised that the ‘suicide king’ came to be a thing?

I have been working on a playing card design project for a while and researching the history of the cards as I go and this one has just stumped me. Hoping someone here with more knowledge of the history can help?

Design & Development / Re: 6 handed and 8 suit deck... opinions?

So, you're looking at making a deck that's essentially like International Standard playing cards, but using twice the number of suits and a few extra ranks....

Yeah kind of. They’re normal cards. I was intending to make the extras eventually for the video game anyway so was thinking I would look and see if it was something people look for in physical format/ collectibles.

My approach is modular though so I’m thinking...

Vol1 - standard pips four families regular set
Vol2 - alternate pips four additional families but still regular format
Vol3 - basically expansion. Would feature the extra cards for all 8 suits and some bonuses bits and pieces

Plan to Kickstarter vol1 and do it if it gets interest, and if vol2 and vol3 seem viable put them in as seperate kickstarters after? Seems cleaner than having confusing rewards that trigger the different volumes although part of me feels like one Kickstarter for all three with the vol2 and 3 as high rewards/ stretch goals could work

Design & Development / 6 handed and 8 suit deck... opinions?
« on: July 10, 2018, 05:16:54 PM »
So I’m working on a deck that started as a project for a video game Im making, which I wanted to have a particular aesthetic.

For the game my original intention was to make 8 suit deck (and also create cards for 6 handed) just to make massive multiplayer games possible, really.

Now this has also become a print project I wondered what people’s opinions on 8 suit decks and 6 handed decks are?

Are they useful, desirable, collectible?

Yes, that's exactly what I meant! I think it makes it more consistent, how does that feel to you?

And YES!
Here is the Back Design ( 2 version ) & Fanning(am I using the right word?) mock up,
I am pretty sure that most of you will like the design (but maybe not included the red circle & Japanese word XD)

(Still thinking should we make a day light/ light blue sky background version to help us hit the goal of funding)

I really like the way this back design fans around

Design & Development / Re: Feedback on custom deck

Hey just wanted to say, new to this site but its been really cool reading this thread and seeing your progress and revisions. The cards look so much better as a result of your openness to take on the feedback of the folk on the forum and it's great to see the progression! Good luck with everything!

EDIT - Disappointed to just see your funding failed... I actually think the branding/ pack design and arguably the backs look less polished now than the actual cards because of all the great revisions and hard work you have done on the cards? I wonder if you worked up that key art to similar style/ standard and polish you have done elsewhere you might reap the rewards?

I like the theme, and the vibe / style feels right for the theme.

I like the consistency of the style on the court card / illustrations.

Agree with above that would prefer pips to be solid / shaded / filled somehow

On the harmonica one at first my eyes read it as a guy with a hotdog. Maybe I am hungry and need dinner (its about that time in England) but might need some textural / grid lines on the back of the harmonica to make it slightly easier to read?

Cool project though!

I wonder if the heart pip might look slightly better if it was mono like the rest tho i.e. the detail all in white instead of the black part.

Seriously though they're really good and that's the only constructive criticism I can think of on art side

Look forward to copping some when they come out

And now we are working on a new Kickstarter project with a Japanese Summer Festival Theme...

Here are some of the design, please give us some advise or comment when any comes up in your mind :D

Not to copy everyone else but 100% agree; 'cute' is a great way to describe these!

Also agree with what Don said, the pips are good because obviously remixed to the theme a bit but totally work still

Name or your nickname or Stage name. Which ever you would like us to address you as
No stagename... just Jamie, or jezzurp or whatever (I get called a lot worse)

Where you are from. Because members of the forums come from all over so we would love to know if we have fellow countrymen/women in the house!
I'm from Southsea which is in the island city of Portsmouth on southcoast of England.

Are you a Cardist? Magician? Collector? a combination of the 3?
I am an artist, work in video game industry and I always loved cool decks of cards. Recently started working on a custom deck initially for use in a video game I was making as a personal project but then started really getting into researching the history of the pips and stuff, and the cultures I was using as visual ref the project ballooned a bit. When friends and colleagues saw them and started asking me to get some printed so they can have some I realised I should probably look into getting physical versions made!

What got you into the arts?
I guess answered above. Not sure I qualify as being into 'the arts' as in performance and such but I am a visual artist and work in video games. Predominantly have been UI/UX artist and web developer for most of career but also done a lot of photography and painting and also always been a nerd for pixel art.

How you found out about the forums. We are always secretly curious
Actually googling for info about best suppliers. Was hoping to find a forum where I could ask people who really know their stuff about the print suppliers and pros and cons. Even from lurking I think I have learned a fair bit but wanted to ask some questions etc too and I guess just interact with other people who are nerdy in a similar way to me. I was actually trying to register for a little while but was stuck in a loop until I messaged Don and he helped me out.

Say hello!
