Poll link: http://www.easypolls.net/poll.html?p=51bea972e4b06789d870dd5b

This is my first post as recently I have become very interested in the art of cards. However, I do not know where to begin as there are very few comparisons for cards but many different products

My budget is <$15 (per deck), so I won't be purchasing any promotional, rare, or uncut decks. I might make multiple purchases (2-3), however. I am ordering from Amazon, so I am only choosing from Ellusionist or Theory11 (I cannot find many other companies on Amazon).

I am looking for a deck of cards that is good for cardistry movements (fanning, shuffling, cuts, springs and dribbles, etc.) but can also execute magic tricks well. I intend for them to at least last 2 years with use about 3-4 times per week, usually more. However, I also want mo be able to handle playing card games with others, and I don't want playing with them wear them down too much. Nicer designs would be appreciated, but not necessary.

Any advice, suggestions, recommendations or places to find more info would be nice. Thanks in advance for any help given, as well as the time and effort put into making a decision!

Infinity is a must have. Gorgeous art work and deck.

As for standard decks, grab some Tally's.

Nothing beats Ohio-made cards, though, if you can find them. Why only Amazon?

You're expecting one deck to last you two years? Maybe if you live in the right climate and the buddies you're playing poker with treat them like newborn babies.

I use my decks to they are totally ruined and then continue. I dont get rid of a deck till I lose it. Which I never know how that happens. Honestly I say just get standard bikes. They are cheap and good. Other then that I like the white vision deck. I am unsure if you can find it on amazon but its great.
Do you guys even read this? Like I could have the meaning of life here and I doubt you would know it.

For flourishing and cardistry and magic, standard tally-hos are great. For some added pizzazz and elegance the white ghosts are great, and for the hint of fully customised intrigue, the artifice decks will do justice.
If I were an eskimo, I would build my igloo next to a supermarket.

I agree about the Infinity being a nice deck. I am only ordering through Amazon because I have a $5 gift card for amazon and I kind of want to use it :P

I do live in a good climate, but I won't be playing poker every day, mainly just practicing cardistry. Maybe once a week, twice?

I use my decks to they are totally ruined and then continue. I dont get rid of a deck till I lose it. Which I never know how that happens. Honestly I say just get standard bikes. Yeah they aren't on Amazon, but damn they do look nice.

Thanks for the input. Which do you prefer between the Ghosts and the Artifice decks?

I understand, but the people I play cards with are REALLY rough with them. Like, the deck is basically worthless to me after the night's over.

And, especially if you're doing flourishes, you'll need a fresh deck of cards every once and a while. I'd suggest getting a few different decks and rotating their use.

I think I might use some cheaper decks when playing with friends, such as Guardians or Titaniums.

However, which decks would you recommend in terms of personal preference?

A deck that's good for cardistry, magic, and gaming that will last for 2 years? That's a harsh requirement..

I recommend bicycle masters edition. I've been buying one deck once a year for 4 years so I can vouch for them. I don't know how the Erlanger decks handle as I've never came across any. The art is only basic though. I think all masters are all Ohio made still? Not sure, last one I got at April was Ohio but I got the deck from a local magic shop.

Otherwise get monarchs or artisans cause they handle and look good

From what I can recall, after the UV500 masters, the stock is pretty much like a less thick and stiff stock, but still above average. And yeah, the masters, especially from back in the day last so long.

The Erlanger Masters are...average. At best. They pretty much are identical to most other decks today.

The UV500 ones are absolutely amazing though. I have a stash of about 100 of the Reds and Blues that I use for Poker nights. They get beat up and it's not a problem, because of how durable they are.

If you want a solid deck that will last years, get a pack of Virginia Slims. 100% of the people that have had them, say they get better with use. Next best thing would be Ohio Arrco's I think.

I would agree. Or maybe something in the middle?

Are the Shadow Masters worth vouching for? Also between the Monarchs and Artisans, which do you prefer and in which color schemes?
I also hear you like the Arcanes. How do they compare with the Artifice?

I don't think they sell UV500s anymore, let alone on Amazon.

Pop in UV500 cards on eBay and you'll come across a decent amount.

Get yourself some standard rider backs to use and abuse, then break in some decks for your performances. Ultimately it's up to what appeals to you; most decks these days will handle the same give or take a few things here and there.

At the moment, if you order from ellusionist and buy 18 decks, you get two of those 'rare' decks for free!

  • Pick a card, any card...no, not THAT card!

  • Facebook:
At the moment, if you order from ellusionist and buy 18 decks, you get two of those 'rare' decks for free!

...only if he buys at the Ellusionist web site - he stated he's buying only through Amazon.

Good utility decks would be the Bicycle Masters (red and blue) and either design of the Tally Ho deck.  The Shadow Masters are a great design, but you want something with serious longevity - any all-black deck will show signs of edge chipping after only a short amount of handling so they'd need to be treated with kid gloves and/or only used on special occasions.  Definitely NOT a poker deck.

For something a little more exotic AND budget conscious...

From Ellusionist, I like the white Ghost and the white Arcane.  No edge chipping issues and to the uninitiated they look "wicked-kewl".  Plus, should you come into a little cash down the road, both decks have "special" varieties available from Ellusionist, like the gaff cards, the Rising Card deck, the Invisible deck, etc.  Also a great deck pair would be the Artifice deck, version 2, in blue and green.  They make great "neighborhood poker" decks.

From T11 - well...most of their current-issue stock is suitable for both purposes, not too many clunkers in there.  That's largely because most T11 deck designs aren't full-custom - the faces are often recolored, using the darker reds of casino decks.  Because Guardians are so cheap, both the T11 version and the USPC version, and have a few bonuses for magicians (hidden one-way back, two identical jokers and the T11 version has a blank face card and a double-backed card), they make a good go-to deck.

I also love the design of the Monarchs, both the original "black" and the newer "silver" - there's no good reason to go chasing after the rare white version and the super-rare gold version.  The original Monarchs are the deck used throughout the movie "Now You See Me".  They have a classy, traditional look to them and are also well-suited to the poker table.

T11 has some of the best prices online for the USPC basics - Bicyle, Bee, Tally Ho - especially if you buy in bulk.

Should you want to venture away from Amazon and check out some others, House of Playing Cards (HOPC) and the Blue Crown (two divisions of the same company) have some good, solid decks at reasonable prices - biggest recommendations in that department would be the Crown deck (in blue, red and green) and the new NOC version 2 decks (blue, red, green, purple, yellow).  They are presently sold out of the blue, but like all of their staple designs, they'll get a reprint in due time and be back in stock.  The NOCs have a pair of unique features for magicians - despite having a plain, solid-color, patternless back, they're marked for suit and they come with a bonus card (the version 2 deck has an extra 2 of hearts in each pack) allowing for some unique magic effects.  The v1 NOCs weren't suit-marked, but they had a bonus Queen of Hearts in each pack.  Additionally, their Altruism deck, both original and Snow Owl editions, have bonus Queens of Hearts due to a printing error - the uncut sheet has no Queen of Diamonds on it; they had to be printed separately and packaged separately in little envelopes to be given out with each deck sold.

Another thing to consider, for magic purposes, is getting some relatively inexpensive gaffed decks.  Specifically, I'd recommend a stripper deck and a Mirage deck with the Bicycle Rider Back design and a GT Speedreader marked deck in the Bicycle Mandolin Back design.  There's also a newer deck, a "Gambler's Deck", in the Bicycle Maiden Back design - it certainly costs a bit more, but it's a stripper deck, a marked deck and a stacked deck all in one.  There's some phenomenal things you can do with that deck...  If your budget is genuinely tight, though, get the one basic gaffed deck nearly every magician has no matter how much they'll deny it: a stripper deck.  A Bike Rider Back stripper can be bought for about $7-8; I've noticed that the red decks have a less-shallow stripped edge to them than the blue ones, meaning they're easier to spot but also easier to use.  Start with a red, work your way up to a blue.  The current "Cadillac of strippers" on the market now would probably be the ones from Dan and Dave - expensive, but professional "underground casino" grade.  :))

I was just trying to point out that it pays off to buy directly from the source, both in freebies and cost of merchandise

Is this really a post or are you playing a practical joke?  As Don stated, just pick one... $5 gift card to make your decision?  Riderbacks in the future? A poll? Stop playing & have fun with your deck, whichever you choose...
