Ok guys I'm SORRY. Good@Sabacc I didn't mean that on purpose ok? I misunderstood and I'm sorry alright. Moon.exe I wasn't mad at all. I never thought u were an expert on that subject and the only reason I PMed u was because u said u have the headphones and I wanted to see if u knew a place where I can get it. Who ever said asking questions is wrong? ??? ?? I probably sound really annoying to both  of you, but oh well I'll try to be better ok

Relax.  Take a deeeeeeep breath.  Now, exhaaaaaaaaaale.

It was mentioned if not on this topic then in another recent topic that good quality studio cans can be had for a fraction of the price and deliver a mighty fine sound, extremely faithful to the original recording.  Consider that instead of overpaying for a name brand or promoting illicit forgeries of said brand name.  The only reason to do otherwise would be if the headphones were intended more as a fashion accessory rather than a device for transmitting sound at close range to your ears, in which case, just buy what the rich kids are buying, 'cause that stuff looks COOL!  (Yes, just a dash of sarcasm, but not meant with malice - just to illuminate the silliness.)  Headphones don't have to look stone-ugly, but they really should perform, regardless of who made them or how cool they look.  You want fashion, buy jewelry.

It's reputed that while Hofzinser invented the double backer about 150 years ago, they weren't commonly known until DeLand started using them in some of the packet tricks he sold around the time of World War I.

Here's an article with more about the story.

It's also mentioned in the Wikipedia article about Dai Vernon.

I would've shown him to fan and maybe even spring, but I thought his child hands were too small to hold the cards correctly, and he kept dropping the deck as if to prove me right. Maybe I should give him a deck of mini ghosts or something... ::)

Magicians with smaller hands will often use bridge-sized cards instead of poker-sized.  A Japanese magician named Mr. Maric had his custom deck made bridge-sized.  The Bicycle "Magic" two-deck set is bridge-sized; one ungimmicked deck, one stripper deck.  Lastly, some cardists use "manipulation cards", which are usually available in bridge-sized, or at least in bridge width - one deck is narrow and insanely long for making wicked-looking fans.

Get him a deck or two of bridge-sized cards as a late Christmas gift.  Something decent - Bicycle comes in bridge size as well as many plastic deck models.

Yeah, Magic Finish has a distinct fragrance.  It'll fade.  And in ten years, the CDC will release warnings about the toxic fumes, but by then we'll all be in card collector heaven...

« on: December 25, 2011, 02:44:23 AM »
Thank you so much for this. I love how this deck looks, and I will try to buy some. These decks definitely look awesome. Also they aren't that expensive in comparison to the charity waters decks.

You are not buying $10 Charity deck, but you are donating $10 and get a free deck.
Thought like this is better.

I know. I am not saying anything bad about that price. I am still going to buy the Charity deck because I want to help out, and I like the Ace of Spades. I just find it funny that an old deck that is classified rare is the same price as a new deck.

Ours is not to question why, ours is just to pass or buy...

I paid about $25 a pack for mine some months ago.  Seeing them this cheap is an outrageous bargain.  The only other possibility is that maybe BMPW is taking pre-orders on the V2's, but he usually lists when a deck is V1, V2, OS X, Windows 7, Vintage 1800, V8 with 424 cubic inches, 6 and 7/8th, etc.

I'm not sure.  I'll try and fInd out if they are or not. I was actually kinda expecting propaganda v2

Not sure of what?  The five releases?  The ones that came out already?  The ones that are listed above?

If you're talking about the Propaganda release I found on BM Poker World, it's very unlikely that Brooke Michael would get a T11 release before T11 did...  They're likely V1 Props.

While we did sneakily get info that V2 Props are coming, it doesn't look like they're coming this year.  Check back in a week or two!

Playing Card Plethora / Re: [Review] Bicycle Johnny Cupcakes
« on: December 25, 2011, 02:30:48 AM »
I just purchased the last five decks of this in stock over at johnnycupcakes.com.  It was a freakin' nuisance - they discontinued USPS shipping for the holidays and I use a PO Box so I had to ship to a friend's house.  I wasn't even expecting to buy so many decks, but since the shipping was stupidly expensive, I say why not just get a few more, and some pencils while I'm at it...

I should have them by the new year.  I'm going to put up a HUGE sale of stuff, and two or three of these decks will be part of that sale.  Stay tuned...

I never did pick up any of these. They looked like nice promotional deck.

I know I've come off harsh and whatnot to you Sabacc, but I do respect you. You have a great deal of knowledge and wisdom in magic/cards. I would like to know what you think of this deck when you get it!

Hey, it's cool.  I don't take it too personally.

I really love the design - I've never, ever seen such an interesting set of faces before in a jumbo size like this.  They're very unique.  That alone makes them something I'm interested in.

how many of that are printed? and is the deck sold out ?

We don't know.  Why don't you ask Johnny Cupcakes?

how many of that are printed? and is the deck sold out ?

As of how many are printed, I am not too sure. For the sold out part, someone just posted a link.

The link still works.  I checked it out just now - you can actually buy decks still, but any attempt to buy more than five triggers a warning that you're attempting to buy more than what's in stock.  That's the SAME warning I was getting this morning when ordering them.

Because of the domestic shipping cost, it's not worth it to buy just one or two decks - they wanted over $10, while five decks and four pencils was $12.95.  It's a case of go big or go home.  As far as international buyers, I'd say you're out of luck.  They ship internationally, but if they're this expensive domestically, I'd say you're going to get reamed on the shipping charges internationally, especially outside of North America.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: David Blaine Variety Box - Only 250 available!
« on: December 25, 2011, 02:14:22 AM »
All right. I've found someone willing to sell me their Variety Box! Although, they're selling it for $200. I honestly didn't expect it any cheaper; I think this is a pretty good deal. Unfortunately, with shipping, I'm looking at $250+. Do you guys think it's a good idea?
I haven't got any David Blaine's White Lions, or a Red Split Spades deck. Nor, of course, do I have the sample decks. And... nor do I have the Sepia Lions Split Spades, or the Bee Split Spades. So, I think that's 10 out of the 12 decks that I do not yet own. So, I'm thinking this is a good deal. But I just want to check with you guys first, to see if anyone else agrees with me. Also, if anyone is going to sell one for cheaper than $200, this is a brilliant chance for you to dive in and get an immediate customer.  ;)

Think of it this way, Lushbob - what would it cost you to get all those spiffy decks (AND the unadvertised inclusion of the Split Spades Lions gaff cards in red and blue) separately?  I'd say off the top of my head they'd cost you WAY more than the Variety Box.  Aside from the purple "Rainbow" deck, the other two prototype gaff decks and the Tally Ho Split Spades, you have an entire DB collection in a single box - including one deck that's not available elsewhere.

I love my decks, but I'm a little displeased at the condition my boxes arrived in - both were damaged, at least a little, and it wasn't a postal problem since the exterior box they were shipped in was completely intact.  One has a dented corner and the other has a gash along one edge.  I'm planning on writing to DB customer service, perhaps later tonight.

Cute sketch.

"Vicky" is short for Victorian.  Some steampunk types use the term.  It was popularized in the novel "The Diamond Age" by Neal Stephenson.

I'm going to be on a plane, does anyone want to grab me some and sell them? :P

Alex, since you're coming to visit my area anyway, I'll try to pick them up for you.  They'll likely arrive before you do, and even if they don't, I have my first brick (plus the bonus deck - thanks, Alex Pandrea!) which I could hand over instead of the one I'll try getting Sunday.  That's TRY, as in I hope I'll not get shut out.  Say the word and I'll go for it.

Go for it, I can pay you in cash in NYC to avoid PayPal fees as well. :)

Sounds like a plan - done.  I'll give you a heads-up if I pull it off.  If I don't, I could probably dig a little deeper into my personal stock and sell you more than we originally dealt for.

just curious was there a special part of their site that allowed you to buy these, because i went to the playing cards part of their site, on the day they were released, and all i saw was the v2 versions of blue red and green crown. and when those 3 colors sold out in version 1 they still had their picture up saying sold out. i don't see anything like that for the black crown. please help, really don't want to miss out on this this time.

thanks

They're going to appear in the normal playing cards section of the site.  When they were first offered, they appeared there, but with the server crash issues, it looks like TBC opted to simply remove the posting instead of leaving a "sold out" sign up not longer after the initial "sell-out" took place.  If you'll look, you'll see that the White Arrcos are also still listed, though shown as sold out, while they've been gone for several days now.  There was no server crash issues on that sale, and the Arrcos are still available from NYMP at arrcocards.com

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Card Stock
« on: December 25, 2011, 01:27:44 AM »
Card stocks vary, generally based on thickness and pliability.  Card finishes are a separate feature of a playing card - it's what they've been coated with and whether a texture has been applied to it.  The process is usually like this:

Card stock paper arrives at the card company on heavy rolls, straight from the mill.  Two rolls are glued and pressed to each other to make a single, bigger roll of thicker paper - what we call pasteboard.  The glue has graphite mixed in to make the playing cards opaque when held up to the light.

Depending on the volume and type of cards being made, these two steps occur but sometimes in reversed order.  In other words:

Either the card paper is cut into sheets and the sheets are fed into a "sheet press" printer, as used for relatively small deck print runs, or...

The paper in roll form is fed into a "web press" printer, printed, then cut into sheets, a process usually reserved for LARGE print runs of high quality, such as premium casino-grade playing cards.

People have argued which method is better, with people often declaring that "web press" is superior to "sheet press".  Well, the current state-of-the-art playing card finish, known by USPC as "Magic Finish" but also referred to by some playing card companies as "Performance Coating" or "Premium Finish", is only available on sheet press runs.

During the printing process, after the ink has hit the paper, the cards are coated with a finish, usually consisting of some plastic-type chemical laminates.  At this point, the cards finish may also be either left smooth, or given a proprietary patterning.  The chemical and pattern combined form what's known as the finish, and there are many out there, most of which are considered trademarks, such as "Air Cushion Finish" on Bicycles, "Linoid Finish" on Tally-Ho decks, "Cambric" (textured) and "Ivory" (smooth) finishes on Bees, "Magic Finish" (see above) on many privately-produced decks, etc.  "Smooth" is a generic finish term - while most smooth-finish decks are of a lower grade, a major exception would be the Aladdin deck in the smooth finish - a high-grade deck designed for use in hot, humid climates, considered to have exceptional fanning qualities for a smooth card.  "Linen Finish" is still used as a term, but a true linen finish hasn't been used in perhaps thirty years or so - the rollers used to create the linen texturing on the surface of the card used to be made of different linens and cottons, but are now almost exclusively made out of steel.

From here, the card sheets are cut - first into strips, then the strips are cut into the individual cards.  Modern plants do the cutting and sorting by machine, while older facilities use manual cutting and sorting methods.  After the cards are cut out of the sheets, they're still rectangular - the corners are rounded by putting them into a die press; usually a single die used for each card in the deck to insure that the entire deck has the exact same shape for each card.  If a card is cut "face up", it's fed through the die so the back of the card is penetrated first - this is the modern method for cutting, supposedly more efficient, but it also results in cards that don't have superior shuffling unless they're shuffled face up.  A "face down" cut, where the card is cut with the die piercing from the front first through to the back, is often called a "traditional" cut, since up until the 1980s all decks were being cut this way.  Casinos to this day usually insist on getting traditionally-cut decks, since they have superior shuffling when face down, especially when performing weave and faro shuffles.  Many magicians prefer this type of cut, and certain decks designed specifically for magicians are traditionally cut, such as the Richard Turner Gold Seal Bicycle Rider Backs, the Bicycle Mandolin Backs, the Bee decks designed for the CARC, etc.  Of all standard non-specialty decks on the market made by the USPC, Tally Ho is the only one that's still traditionally-cut to this day.

Now, there's all kinds of factors that makes any one deck superior to another, and that's strictly speaking in terms of paper and finish, not card design.

Certain papers are just plain cheap and inferior.  USPC doesn't deal with them much.  Cheap manufacturers in Asia will often make decks inexpensively out of cheaper paper and finishes, usually for decks meant more as souvenirs than as something meant for serious use.  Sometimes, unscrupulous manufacturers will counterfeit other companies' designs using inferior material and processes as a way to make a buck of someone else's intellectual property.

Now, discounting those completely, the papers you'll run into more commonly will start with simple smooth-finish decks like Congress bridge cards.  They aren't fancy, but they're pretty and they get the job done for a few rounds of bridge with the neighbors.  If you're into that sort of thing!
;)

Of the specialty card market, the low end of the grade list would be basic Bicycle stock, sometimes called by its stock number, 325.  Not the worst, not the best - a decent workmanlike stock.  I could be mistaken, but your Sentinels you mentioned may be a grade along these lines, or slightly better.  They are rather thin compared to many other custom decks on the market, but some find this desirable - you can more easily create a crimp in a card that's thin, a technique used for locating a card by some magicians and card sharps.  The crimp may be harder to remove, however, with a grater chance of becoming a crease - a drawback.

As you step up, there are a variety of grades which people rate in different ways.  The Monarchs, which you mentioned in particular, are a variant of the Aristocrat stock, which is considered one of the best on the market - soft, pliable, but still sturdy; an excellent card player's stock.  Tally Ho stock has a certain firmness and ability to bounce back from crimping (intentional and accidental) that's often preferred by cardists - people who perform cardistry, or playing card manipulation, as an art form in itself rather than as a subset of the art form of playing card magic and sleight-of-hand.  Many think of Bee casino grade stock as the top for its legendary durability.

Ellusionist used to have a signature card stock and finish combination called "UV500 Air-Flow Finish", with UV500 being the stock used.  In addition to being a thicker stock than most and much more durable, they also had the unique property of glowing under an ultraviolet or "black" light.  But due to dramatically increased costs, the UV500 stock was discontinued, and USPC Legal declared around the same time that any Bicycle-branded deck that mentioned a finish had to be labeled "Air Cushion" regardless of the actual finish being used.  This restriction seems to have been relaxed, however, with the release of Magic Finish, now used by the majority of custom playing card producers who want to make a top-grade deck.  Ellusionist does still use thicker stocks in some older deck designs, but many newer ones aren't as thick.

Also, David Blaine just released a new blue White Lions Series A deck in the "red" or "rainbow" box that uses a UV stock, which could mean the UV500 or something similar is being revived.  The deck in question was only sold as part of his "Variety Box", released last week, and only 250 of these decks are in circulation at this time.  The way to tell them apart from the red and purple decks released in the same tuckbox is by looking for a small black dot in magic marker written on the cellophane so as to appear on the deck seal.

Are any of these stocks "the best" above all else?  What about the finishes used on them?  That depends on the criteria you choose to apply.  It's like declaring one specific work of art as the world's best work of art - it can't be done because there are so many factors involved in the comparison.  The best you'd be able to come up with is the best in a single person's opinion, or a small group's opinion.

How do you know which stock and finish combination are right for you?  Well, try them!  Sure, it's expensive to buy all the different combinations, but you can also get advice from similarly-minded collectors, players, artists, etc. who like what you like.

There are two things that most card people will agree on.

1) Magic Finish is indeed the slickest finish you're likely to find for the indefinite future, and highly desired in most newly-made decks.

2) Older playing card stock is more desirable to newer stocks, due to the older stocks being made of more original wood pulp from higher grade woods, while newer stocks have more and more recycled content with each passing year, decreasing the original wood pulp content and the quality of the paper itself.  Recycling is a good thing for the environment, but a terrible thing for creating a quality paper product.

I hope this answers any questions you have right now - and steers you to better questions for the future!

What I like most about the Ghost gaff deck is that it has gaffs that I use - the best selection of double-backers I've seen, matched to a number of different decks.  I do Stranger Card Predictions with signature all the time using some spare red and blue Rider Back cards with those gaffs in a standard Ghost deck.

Seriously - an original back, and a couple of gaff cards, but the Ace of Spades is kind of dull, as are the Jokers, and the faces are 100% ORDINARY, like ANY OTHER pack of Bikes from the corner drugstore!  Toss in an insanely high price due to rarity, and forget it.

I said this before: rarity doesn't make something good, or valuable, automatically.  I create extraordinarily rare one-of-a-kind objects every day when I visit my bathroom, but I don't exactly see people banging down my door to have them.  I'd sooner have off-the-rack Rider Backs...

Wow you guys find these things fast! Awesome

Well one thing i do want to say is this is not a fake sell-out at all. After sending out all the black decks we counted our inventory and realized (because of the site going down) that we sold less than we intended. Also, not only that, but because of the site going down (which was our fault) many people had them in their shopping carts but couldnt checkout. Of course, we want to make everyone happy as usual, so we are releasing a few more to somewhat fix the problem. This means we are keeping fewer for ourselves, but thats ok, we're not selfish :)

Also, for the arrco cards, because of their popularity, we got more from The New York Magic Project...you guys can still pick up the few left there as well.

As far as the crowns are concerned...half of our stock is almost gone. The release on monday will be the last of this half at a price you cant pass up! The rest will be getting to us from uspc a few weeks after the new year most likely.

Hope this helps!
Alex^

A thought just occurred to me - does this mean that anyone who had a few decks in their cart but were caught in flagrante delicito when the server went casters up may actually be able to revisit their cart and make that interrupted purchase?  Or were the carts emptied out?

Where you'll find that EXACT photo, here:

They don't have every deck, but they do have a huge reference library of them to see.  I love this site.

Look like a merz deck but in Philippine style..

Merz67 would have to buff up his skills to make a deck with this much creativity.  It's not the most creative deck on earth, but Merz67 is far and away not the most creative deck designer...  There are some primitive trilobite fossils that are a little less creative than he is, and perhaps also my pet dust rhino, but that's about it.

These look like a poor cut-and-paste job to me.  Totally not a fan.  The back would be OK if it wasn't one-way.

Yeah, but they're a patriotic deck.  Can you tell me you've seen better US patriotic decks?  Most of them are as exciting as evaporated dishwater.  I'm still trying to figure out what's so freakin' appealing about the '08 Election decks to some.

Actually, every time I'm ready to buy with Jason (Mr. 1eyedjack himself), it often turns into a trade instead!  I ordered a day ago ready to pay cash, but instead I'm trading three Red Artifice for two each of the entire Bicycle Vintage series to date and black and green Arrcos.

But the Bicycle gaff cards are also in the good ol' red Rider Back...  and blue, as well!

It's not entirely true that spectators immediately assume you're using a trick deck if it's anything other than the bog standard Rider Back.  More than half the time, they don't even RECOGNIZE you're holding a Rider Back.  They discovered this in testing for the Mandolin Back.  Your average spectator has no idea what a Rider Back is, and couldn't tell any difference in the Mandolin Back.

If you want a spectator to buy that your deck is "normal", let them examine it.  Then swap in the gaff cards and let the fur fly.  Swap them back out for a re-examination after they've been fried.  They'll think you're some kind of card god or something...

Seems that Brooke Michael's Poker World is offering Propaganda decks for a mere $9.95.  They don't state that they're version 2, so these may be V1's.  They're usually sticklers about that sort of thing, and they described the box - it wasn't embossed, foil-covered, debossed, rebossed, yesbossed or anything of the sort, so they don't SEEM to be a T11 redux...
