Here's a sneak peek at an upcoming in-house project from Brahma Playing Cards!

The deck does not yet have a name, but it will by the time this reaches Kickstarter.  The exact date has yet to be determined, but should be in under a month.

The entire deck will be hand-drawn using an ink quill pen!  If you thought major revisions in some computer graphics program file could be a pain, imagine having to recreate the entire piece from scratch...

And no, as much as I'd love to take credit for this design, it's not mine; the apex of my ink-drawing skills would be a barely-legible autograph on a credit card receipt!  :))

Well that is certainly a different take on things! Very interesting. I'm not sure this is something I personally will purchase but i love the fact that they are doing something unique with obvious hard work and detail. The difficulty in perfectly mirroring a hand drawn piece is a small downer for me, but it's still a great concept.

That's a very neat way to design a deck. The detail in that card is crazy! I will definitely be pledging for this deck. If it is printed, I will own a deck designed with an ink quill pen and it will be my first deck from Brahma.

When I saw this design, the first thing the came to my mine was the WhiteKnuckle deck.  It's a HUGE amount of work.  The designs are a little on the medieval/surreal side!

I am not a huge fan of the gothic/mythical artwork. It kinda creeps me out. However I can see the amount of hard work put into these. Can't wait to see the box and back design. Any more details on the release date and amountto be printed and purpose?

I'll provide a sneak of the card back soon.

You must have missed it in the first post, where I mentioned that the target on this project was to have it on Kickstarter in under a month...

The amount has yet to be determined.

The purpose?  To sell a cool-looking deck and make money would be my first guess...  :))  Brahma Playing Cards is looking to establish the company's brand and this is more like a calling card.  Rajas could simply print the deck and offer it for sale, but using Kickstarter allows him to create an audience that's interested in the company's products.

Art looks nice, but honestly I don't like the way it doesn't match up. Stuff like the cape just kind of dead ends in the middle of the card.

Actually, that's in the style of early "two-headed" court cards.  That's how they used to look at first.  Look at these images from a classic Bavarian tarock deck:

I'm rather fond of that layered-armor look!

Here's a look at a design that's under consideration as the card back.  It may or may not end up as the back, and could possibly become something else - maybe a joker or a gaff card.  It reminds me of something Lovecraftian, personally...

By the way, in the event you were wondering where all this came from and why I'm passing it to you, it's because I'm now the US Project Manager for Brahma Playing Cards!  The paperwork hasn't been finalized yet, but I'm working for Rajas when I'm not at my night job, promoting his company and their products to the marketplace.

Congrats Don!

Also, the back design isn't one that interests me at all. I see how it goes with the deck but so far, I like the faces much better than the back.

It's one possible concept for the back, as I said.  Rajas wasn't certain about using this as a back himself, though there's no denying that it's an interesting piece of pen work.

I like the design of the KoH and QoH as well. As for the back, maybe a suit of armor, a crown or two blades crossing each other? Just a suggestion. Interested to see how this turns out.  :)

Crown and Swords would be very redundant don't you think? I mean with the Crown decks and the Centurions and all. I think this raw look makes this design rather unique.

This really adds a more otherworldly look to the court collection so far.  I'm telling you, it really evokes Lovecraft/Cthulu mythos in my mind, or at the least a fusion of the medieval and the alien.  I'm liking this a lot!

Wow, I thought the EXACT same thing.  he's my main.  Got me thinking it'd be cool to get a BB deck, since there's a character for every court card...

Congrats, Don.  These cards look really cool, even if I'm not a fan of the 'line' you get through the middle where they don't join.  I also think there's too much white space in the current back design; it's ink; colour it up!

The back is still very much in the early stages.  We'll see where that goes.  I feel it needs a little something more as well.

The sinuous lines of the one on the left feels like a better fit to me, but it does need more detail. Perhaps something in the middle to give it the strong centre which the other back has.

Yes, I agree with Evan. Some parts of both back design seem a bit lacking. Maybe increasing the contrast between the center and back and adding a little background design might help. I'm not sure.

i know the design on the left look better but to me it does not have any space for improvement .. but for the right one it is pretty easy to add a few more circle at the edges whichi one show it a card fan

I have to tell you I love the court card drafts! i really do! And as for the backs I like the one on the left side as well. The joker is kick ass. Dark but not disturbing to the point where I won't be able to look at it. I love the joker! Great one I really cant wait to see the digitized versions of these. And I'm curious to see what my favourite card will look like. Queen of Spades. :P
I am absolutely in love with these sketches for some reason. good one Rajas! keep 'em coming!

Hello everyone!

I thought it was about time to introduce myself: My name is Andreas Propst (but call me Andi ;) ), I am a young freelance artist and (board and card) game designer from a rural part of Upper Austria. I am the guy behind the Poker Deck artworks Rajas and Don have been showing you.

Let me seize the opportunity to express my sincere thanks for all the great feedback you guys have provided on here. I have been following the thread for quite a while and it was your nice comments that kept me going! :D

So from now on I want to actively participate in the discussion on here and want to give you the opportunity to direct your comments, ideas, feedback, constructive criticism to me personally...

Due to personal illness I haven't been able to provide any more updates lately, but now I am all well again and ready to start through with the poker card art again. Tonight I had a try at the card back - you can have a look at the result attached to this post! Feedback would be more than welcome! :D

If you want to have a look at my other artwork please visit my website at http://ap.o-nan.org
Also in case of any questions you can mail me any time at andreas.propst31@gmail.com

Looking forward to an interesting discussion and interactive process of creating an awesome, unique product!

Thanks and cheers,

Andi

Welcome to the Discourse Andi! It's great to have you here.
Your artwork is incredible and this deck will definitely be awesome.

I love all of the designs so far and that back design is much better than the previous ones. Looks great!

Welcome to the Discourse! I think that this is the best back design so far: a mixture between the two previous one with a strong center image and some little designs in the corners. I can't wait for more updates!

Thanks Nathan! I kept in mind to give the design a strong center and some little things in the corners to get a nice card fan.

Expect the Jack of Hearts soon! Joker is coming up as well! :D

Hello everyone!

Sorry for the long period of silence...  :(
Being a game designer as well, I had a lot of work on soon to be released games
(www.elementalclash.com and www.biomechanicdinobattles.com in case anyone is interested...)
which distracted me a bit from doing more artwork for the poker deck.

So to make up for that, I did an "all-nighter" to be able to present you another card.
Find the Jack of Hearts attached below. Hope you like it!

Next up will be the Joker! I will try to not let you wait this long again so stay tuned! :D

Cheers,

Andi

Nice work!  Are you keeping the whole hand-drawn look or are you touching up/re-shading it in Photoshop?  I think either could be good.

Hey!

Glad you like it!

I will hand-draw everything (at least card back, card box, court cards and joker) and will send the raw files to the guys at Brahma.
What they do with the raw art is up to them (I would guess some adjustments in photoshop would be needed for the print version,
but of that I have no knowledge...)

This deck features exquisite artwork done by hand with a quill from Austrian artist Andreas Propst. Each deck comes in a metallic foil embossed box and is printed on quality 305 gsm German Black Core high performance playing card board with a quantum-grain linen casino grade finish.

The printer will be shipping them direct through DHL with free worldwide shipping - no hassles, no waiting. My last Kickstarter project (the Darkana tarot deck) was delayed by logistics and I had to ship them all myself, which caused a lot of issues. I am happy to report that these issues have all been resolved.

Somethings wrong with their prices, 1 deck is $23, 2 decks is $24, 3 decks is $28. Doesn't make sense at all.

Unfortunately the prices seem to high, I mean $23 for 1 deck and then 2 decks is only 1 dollar more? Something is wrong with that.

Agreed 100%.

Not to mention I received one of the Steampunk decks printed by Brahma and was absolutely and utterly disappointed in the quality.
Maybe they've got their stuff together this go around.

Well, I've got to say it: I'm really fond of this kind of drawing and I think it would make a sweet deck.

Unfortunately, as some folks noticed before me, bad timing for a KS launch. Not to mention the eccentric pricing method.

I know this is the final version of the deck but, since it would hardly be funded this time, I've got some constructive criticism on the deck:

IMHO, main problem is mirroring. The way court cards were drawn prevent them from being properly mirrored. When I say properly mirrored, I mean they lack continuity from one side to another (as shown on the attached image).

(Please, disregard any language mistakes I may have made. I'm from Brazil and my english isn't great.)

Your English is fine; better than many of the posters around here, even ones for whom English is their native language!  :))

The eccentric pricing has to do with the decks being drop-shipped from Brahma Playing Cards, Mumbai, India.  It costs $X to ship one deck via DHL, then just a little more to ship an extra deck.  It's also meant to encourage more decks sold - you can get a brick for only $5 a deck.

The timing is very, VERY bad.  There's a huge number of decks in the market now, and the new restrictions in place from Kickstarter discouraging wholesale/retail buyers dramatically slash the amount of money available.  The new regulations don't permit a deck project to sell more than a dozen decks at any given reward level.

Re the mirroring, he's actually using the style of the late 19th-century Rouen designs from France - they didn't mirror their cards, instead just painting half a card and rotating the same image 180 degrees to maintain symmetry of design.  Remember, this entire deck was created with quill and ink, not a computer graphics suite - in other words, he's using 19th-century technology to create his designs.  The amount of work required is phenomenal, far beyond what many people would even consider.  Some deck designs could practically be banged out in a single afternoon - this is NOT one of them.

It's a shame that the funding for it is so low - I think it was below 20% when I looked.

not trying to discourage any artist but you have to be realistic.

not many people care about how much effort and time an artist put into their work. the reality is it has to get commercialized. majority of the people just have to like it. it can be detail or it can be simple.

I know a lot of people hates the color change but the reality is ..it works. people just buy them. The company makes more money and they have more resource to actually make a new deck.

you really have to consider yourself (if you are the artist) on payroll. the more time you spend the higher the cost. even if kickstarter is fully funded but the X amount of net profit dollar gain doesn't add up to your payroll then it just means that you wasted time or you lost money.

if this is the first deck you are trying to create then obviously you are setting yourself up for failure. better to pull out than spend more time. time is money every second you spend on a failing project is money you are draining from another project.

I really believe that people have a misconception that kickstarter is a place you start your dream and people pledge because they "support" you.  If you still think this way. THINK AGAIN! that line is only valid to people that are pledge. kickstarter has to give an illusion that people aren't "buying" they are supporting a dream which work out perfect for them. they are the top crow funding platform. but if you are a artist, kickstarter is a good platform to get your first bucket of cash. so you must consider all expense.

sounds harsh that's what i think. if anyone that disagree please PM me or we can start a new thread. i just don't want this to take over the main focus.

Yeah, you seem to be covering a broader topic than just this one deck of cards.  Perhaps making a new topic (if you wish to pursue the thread further) would be a good idea.

While this deck project is not made by the project creator, he did make a preceding deck of tarot cards that looks VERY cool.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/109454417/darkana-tarot-deck

I'd LOVE to see playing cards done in the same style as the original Darkana Tarot deck.
