Some of you may remember The-Con-Artist.com and all of the talk about them. After months of no post or anything from them, they have posted this picture.

Awesome! I'll definitely take 24... dollars to add that to my collection.

i like the deck very much. The color is amazing, and there's also great use of props such as the gun, chain, and barbed wire. What I like even better, other than the fact that there's a reveal, that there will only be about 2,500 printed, and that the edition number is stated on the box, meaning that every box is different and you won't find out what edition you got until you open the deck.

For me, the best part is all that pixelation...  I feel like the deck was designed by Donkey Kong.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

There isn't enough money out there to convince me to get this deck.  Not after all the bullshit that fool was slinging.  Hey, "Bullshitslingers..."  It has more potential than this does...  Now if only I had a picture of The-Con-Artist himself to use for the courts and jokers...

Honestly, I'm tempted to remove it from the NDR because I have serious doubts about it getting made.  So far, it's been nothing but hot chili farts from this guy.

Sooooo..... here's the story...

These were made / printed for the-con-artist, but they were bought out by another company. the decks have been printed for a while... but are in limbo.

Now, Mystery Playing Cards are making a 2nd version of this with some subtle differences... and launching them on KS
The first decks may never see the light of day.

If the company is incompetent enough to purchase this piece of rubbish, I have no faith in their ability to fulfill KS pledges.

These are horrid.

As unloved as this deck is, Jay, I thank you for the info.

I linked through and found the KS project for this deck - in draft form.  It lists an entirely different company name, "Don't Crack the Board Game" from Seattle, WA.  Even better - looking at that URL, it appears that the company was once called "Atom Energy"...  Exactly who is making this blasted thing anyway?

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/atomenergy/960973703?token=ae5358ef

Seriously, when I read "Gunslingers" and see the barbed wire, I'm thinking "Old West".  I'm not thinking of the spade on the box made of something resembling carbon fiber, nor am I thinking of semi-automatic pistols and assault shotguns...  And I'd be very shocked if USPC permitted any deck to go through where the Suicide King is actually COMMITTING SUICIDE ON THE CARD!  Remember, this is the company that didn't want Wiccan imagery and "demons" on the Bicycle Karnival Inferno deck - which ended up with "Bicycle" dropped from the name.

You never know.

The Karnival Dead Eyes deck went through with the Bicycle brand, and they had some REALLY gory stuff.
Hell, the ad card and back had flayed corpses on them, and the joker was a cross-section of a human head.

I know this theme really isn't following the gunslingers thing, which many of you have pointed out already, but I can't believe even the jokers don't include guns. Grenades and a brass knuckles… Well chosen.

Ah, but much of the gore there looked like something out of an old medical journal.  Vast difference between that and a "king" character committing suicide by eating a gun barrel and pulling the trigger...

Speaking purely as a designer, my main problem with this deck is that the term "gunslinger" has certain connotations. It elicits a time and place, a period typically thought of as the wild west. You do not think of the modern soldier or gangster as a gunslinger. This artwork, therefore, is so at odds with the implicit theme that it's jarring and annoying. Grenades? Carbon fiber? AK-47s and barbed wire? Nothing here is cohesive and it just doesn't *make sense* to have all these elements put together.

You have to lock in a solid and united theme first. From there you can travel to a design destination, but when you are so mixed up from the start it just gets you nowhere.

Well said, Paul. Not having a cohesive and consise theme is a fallacy that too many new deck designers commit.

Btw, I'm still waiting for that cardistry deck of yours  ;D

Not to mention that the back features the cylinders of revolvers, generally regarded as much older manufacturing technology on an "Old School" firearm, not modern like carbon fiber or (relatively modern) AK-47s. The thematic content appears to span a couple of centuries at the least. If you wanted to get technical, this could be argued to cover the 1950's onward, but once again the Gunslingers name is an immediate throwback to the old west.

Dictionary.com lists a gunslinger as a gunfighter, and a gunfighter is defined as "a person highly skilled in the use of a gun and a veteran of many gunfights, especially one living during the frontier days of the American West."

Far more information than you cared to know. You're welcome. :-)

Simply put - the guy's theme is everywhere, thus it goes nowhere.  Mismatched clip art and titles do not a theme make.

Perhaps it's just me, but I'm failing to see how version 2 is any different than version 1, let alone better.  Two different typefaces for the indices, only some pips are custom, and he's dropped clip art on existing courts.  Court cards have a vaguely "wanted poster" effect around the court characters, while the spot cards are clean and devoid of this effect.  Wait, that's not aging, it's barbed wire...

If I grabbed any three random decks from my collection, threw them at a wall then picked up enough cards to make a full deck, it would still look better than this.  It really looks like he was trying to create two or three different decks at once, but dropped the plans on the floor, mixed them up and this was the end result.

He's got some interesting ideas, but they're mashed together and not well-executed.  I'd offer him my services to help with the design, but I doubt he'd listen to a word I had to say, based on his old Facebook days.

  • Charm gets you quite far. Guile gets you the rest.
$20,000 stretch goal to add a red "velvet" finish to the inside of the tuck? Can some of the more experienced guys here shed some light on this for me? Does USPCC offer this? Is it really that "affordable"? Have other decks done this? Is that kind of classy or kind of tacky?

And I have to say it, despite everyone else having said it: Really? Calling this deck Gunslinger? It even addresses on the KS page that they know a Wild West aesthetic is the go to perception but not what they are going for. This is almost as bad (Dare I say worse?) than Grungeland.
Kickstarter completely revolutionized the way I waste money.

The people who handle playing cards are always in a world of delicate fingertip technology.

Velvet inside the box?  My first thought would be "WHY?!?"  Then I'd wonder whether USPC offers it.  Doesn't matter, though - USPC allows people to order tucks from some third party printers when they want something special or unique that they either can't or won't tackle.

"Gunslinger" is a dumb name for this deck.  Barbed wire represents farmers and ranchers of the old West, not gunslingers.  But it's not like we didn't try to convince this deck's creator before.

But check out the bio for "S & A" on Kickstarter!  The guy claims he was involved with making the Arcane Gaff Deck!  I seriously question that statement...
