Playing Card Plethora / Re: Gettysburg Playing Cards (KS)
« on: January 22, 2015, 11:14:43 AM »
I know I'm being somewhat secretive but I feel we have a winning product. This deck in a way will be our trial by fire. The stock is 310 linen from Germany and the finish is our own specifications... We call it Royal finish. We tried various varnishes... Amounts and drying times (temps) until we had something that felt right to us. Keep in mind, I'm not a magician or card juggler... So what's good to me and what's good to you might be different. I feel confident that we have a product that will come close to the quality of USPCC, EPCC and LPCC.  Will we surpass their quality? No.. Not yet. But we will be close. Rome wasn't built in a day. We establishing a cheaper place to get decks with all the bells and whistles done... Embossing, gold foil, inside tuck printing, etc. A place where artistic imagination isn't limited to dollar signs.

Here's the updated updated design with the Confederate version.

I like the first one too. On the other forum someone suggested I should tie in the them better in the middle. I came across a 75th anniversary of Gettysburg coin with the flag design and thought I would use it in place of the interlocking hearts. I might switch back before launching. I keep on modifying things until I'm happy with the results.

Here's the front of the tuck and a modified back. Someone suggested the middle needed better theme to tie it in to Civil War.

Follow up to my 2013 deck, Civil Unrest. This deck will solely be based on the battle of Gettysburg.

My wife's project has just be launched on KS. We had an issue with shipping costs but we now have it fixed.

Design & Development / Re: Updated standard court

I'm still in the early stages of the design. But I do understand what you mean about designing as if I never saw a playing card before. For this I wanted to try my first attempt at a standard court. I'm always looking to improve and add to my skill-set. I'm sure I'll change things up before I have a final result. Thanks for the advice.

I guess we have to agree to disagree. Personally when I look at the two I see major improvement... but like they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The line work on old standards is terrible... just my opinion. If it fails to fund I'll just need to color them blue or some horrendous color and call it a day.

My definition and your definition may be different. Here's a side by side comparison. I didn't mean modern in terms of what they're wearing but in terms of the cleanliness of the design. With any design after it's been reproduce time and time again it starts to lose quality. In the case of playing cards, they were designed before Adobe Illustrator (and computers) were around.
I'm fully aware of the various courts used by different companies... that's why I created this set. I want a standard set for the Tomlinson Playing Card Co. that will set it apart from other companies.

Here's the Jack of Hearts for the Tomlinson Playing Card Co. standard court. Still deciding on colors. I want to evoke the classic look but at the same time modernize it. The pips will be different... I just slapped standard ones on for now.

The Vegas logo isn't from this guy either (well unless he's the one that designed it back in 2007). This Vegas logo ambigram has been around for a while.
In fact, the vector is readily available anywhere on the internet.

I didn't say anything is wrong with the design. I was just saying Kickstarter users who aren't card collectors wouldn't be drawn towards it for any specific reasons. For example, the Wizard of Oz cards on now has appeal to people who like the Wizard of Oz and the Vampire cards appeal to people who like vampire stories. My cards are always history based so they tend to appeal to history buffs. Of course, card collectors still support the project but if you project appeals outside the card community then you increase your chances to bring in new people.
But I agree this could be a very sucessful project. The only thing that needs to be re-tooled would be the goal amount and how the pledge tiers are set up.

I think it would help having a deck that appealed to a larger mass market. Your Average Joe isn't going to get excited over a deck like this. Something like his Federal 52 series would've sold like hotcakes. I think using the right approach and marketing you can sell decks for around $6 or $7.

41
Couldn't Jackson just invest personal capital to make up the difference he needs to close this project? Assuming whatever doesn't sell through Kickstarter will sell through his site and he comps whatever doesn't get made by backers than this is a sound strategy. Assume he has the capital to produce without crowd funding, why not run a KS project anyways to get as much as you can from backers and kick in the rest yourself?

He probably could afford to fund the rest of the project... but I bet he'll cancel and relaunch with a lower goal and maybe even a new strategy. The problem with him kicking in the rest on this project is the fact he would be pissing away 10% in fees to KS and Amazon.
I like the concept of the cheaper decks (based on higher print quantity) and I think the concept can work using a different approach.

The Deluxe Edition will feature a few changes and a splash of color.... not to mention an entire different set of people used as the court.

Unless I'm mistaken, the tuck features an image from World War Two the raising of the flag at iwo jima. Wrong war and wrong side of the world for World War One.

I took the family to the Houdini museum in Scranton last month and saw the first lady of magic, Dorothy Dietrich. While we were there I bought the kids a stripper deck. I'm debating wether or not to offer "stripper decks" of the unbranded version. Any opinion as to whether people would be interested or not?

Their does not seem to be a list available anywhere of the irish workers that built the titanic. They apparantely didn't keep records of the workers because their were so many that jumped from one ship building project to another.
However, have you considered using "The Just Missed it" club for the seals on your EPCC decks?  Their are many notable names on that list. Over 6,000 names. I have yet to pin down a complete list but I would bet that one exists.
I'll need to see if I can find that list. I know there was some, like Milton Hersey, but I didn't know there was that many

Yes, I agree, good suggestion. I'll need to look into it.
For the EPCC Edition of the deck there will be several upgrades to the tuck and the court will feature an entirely different set of people. I could also make some other modifications too. Today, I opened up the Unbranded USPCC version of the deck.

As promised here's the link to the preview for the project. I'm still adding some artwork, add-ons and list of notable people. Near the bottom of the project page is still a work in progress. I just need to finish with the goals and add-ons. Right now I have it limits set to equal exactly 2,224 decks (check me if you dare)  I will probably put at least 24 to 48 deck in "safety stock" before launch to make sure all goes to plan.

@rjtomlinson1977 - Lets see your Kickstater preview before it launches.  Check for errors.  Really like the underwater scene in picture 1, YOu could have a night scene with the iceberg on the left.  Have some stars in the background.  What consolation would be in the scene.  That would be special...

I'll post a preview link within a few hours. I won't be a 100% ready until I launch today at 4pm but I'll have something posted soon. Most of the text is ready to proof read.
