I'm also want to get one EMP Monarchs and 144 limited Blue Gold Monarchs to be come a full set.

Good Luck
Thanks!  The person I was helping find a deck actually found an open deck for sale!  A new deck also sold last month for $360 iirc.  Those Blue Gold Monarchs are a tricky one.  If you ever find one sealed, I would be very cautious.  There is no way whatsoever to tell the difference between the 144 OG Monarchs and regular Blue Monarchs.  Still, an open deck of those are still the freaking T11 Unicorn. Lol

Actually, I was told there's exactly one way to tell the difference between the rare 144 Monarchs and the original wide-release Monarchs.  I was told that the cellophane is reversed on the 144, so the tear strip goes in the other direction from standard - but don't quote me on that, because I've never actually seen a pack personally to know for certain.

That’s really interesting!  It could be true, but like you said we’ve never fondled them so we wouldn’t know lol.  One of T11’s execs handles comms on their forums, and he’s said a few times there’s no way to tell them apart.  But I feel like true card nerds like us could find a difference, and that’s exactly what your info is.  I wish we could know!!!

Back in the day I was fortunate enough to snag 3 of the original 111 that went on pre-sale. I only have one now (the older me regrets selling the other two), but have attached some photos to look at if you are interested. I have not spent a lot of time in the card collecting community over the past while so I am unsure of what (if any) differences they may be on the package. Granted you'll have to take my word for it but I have also included my order record from T11 on pre-release day (minus editing out my home address). If there is a better angle I can take, just let me know and I will try to do that ASAP.

Cheers,
Curt

Now someone tell me if I'm wrong, but on that photo, when looking at the box from the front, the tear strip is on the right side of the box.  For ordinary Monarchs, as is the case with nearly every USPC-made and -sealed deck, I'm pretty sure that the tear strip would appear on the LEFT side of the box when looking at the front of the box.

So maybe they cellophane is the way to know.

There's a caveat in there, though.  It's not impossible to remove a deck from the cellophane, alter the contents (say, if you were a magician wanting to plant something in there, etc.) and then RESEAL the cellophane, making it look almost as good as new and certainly well enough to leave the tear strip intact.  If someone can do that, they could make a "fake" Gold Monarch deck out of an ordinary pack, assuming they use a pack that was old enough to look like they did back in 2011.  While they're very, very similar today, I'd bet with some scrutiny you'd be able to spot at least some differences between a 2011 Monarch tuck box and a 2019 tuck box - the copyright info if nothing else.

I wish I had some sealed Monarchs to check!  I think you may be on to something here, Don.  I’m curious enough to ask Lyle over on T11’s forum.  They’ve made a great push on sharing as much as they can about little details for us card nerds :) lol!

Wow, absolutely incredible for you to share; thank you.  I went to your tumblr and saw the post from 2012, too.  What a gem!  There was someone on here (can’t tell if it’s in this thread or a DM) trying to scam me, like that would ever be a possibility lol.  What I’ve learned on Theory11’s forum directly from them, is the tuck is absolutely identical, and there is zero ways to tell the difference between the OGs and the “V2’s”.

I wonder if there’s some “X-ray” technology that could pick up the differences somehow! Lol!  Everyone would love to see pictures on r/playingcards too.  They’re unicorns!  Thanks again!

Hi guys!  Accidentally put this in the wrong area so reposting :)

The elusive EMP Monarchs...sigh...

I’m trying to help a new friend locate one, and seeing as I’ve gotten some awesome help here in the past, I wanted to see if anyone can help me/him.  It looks like he will soon have every Monarch besides the EMP deck!  I’m not including the Uber rare first printing that was ultimately destroyed, save for 144 decks.  That one is the Unicorn lol.

So, if anyone has a lead, please feel free to email me so I can pass this info along to him.  I’ll prolly never have the money for the complete set, so I feel honored I at least get to enjoy some of the hunt :)

Thanks so much guys!

I'm not familiar with EMP Monarchs.  I've heard of, in no particular order...

The original 144-deck black/gold ink release (your "unicorn")
The first full release, dark navy/white
The follow-up printing of same with thinner border
Red
Silver
Gold
Green
White
Now You See Me, as featured in the movie
And a super-tiny number of NYSM decks autographed by the cast.

What are EMP Monarchs?

Hi Don.  Pretty much have everything except for the White Gold and V1 Reds.  The White Gold they consider a quasi V2 of the White, and the V1 used a lighter red color on the tuck.  It seems like everyone is considering the Box Set of Blues as well.

There were decks printed for a high end restaurant, Eleven Madison Park.  It’s basically the Silvers, but the tuck has the restaurants name and logo, and the faces have illustrations of various ingredients.  The restaurant incorporated the deck into their menu a few years ago.  There was a card trick involved in the dessert course, and the guest got the deck as a souvenir.

It seems like there is some connection between Theory11 and the restaurants owner(s), and they both share the same PR company (I’m pretty sure it’s PR but don’t quote me on that lol).

https://www.theory11.com/forums/threads/the-complete-monarch-collection.53458/  Someone recently found and purchased one last month; you can see the pics there.  It’s kind of a Unicorn as well, but there’s some out there for sure.  T11’s VP of operations is putting together a fact sheet about all the Monarchs over on their forum.  The whole set together is my dream set!  So gorgeous!

Thanks so much for the reply!

Have you tried inquiring at the restaurant?  ;)  While I doubt they'd simply give them away, perhaps you could come to some kind of arrangement.
Lol, it’s funny you say that!  I tried emailing them.  The email went to a women who said she represents both the restaurant AND Theory11.  I assumed because she’s receiving inquiry emails, she’s some sort of PR person.  She said she would pass my inquiry along.  Originally, before I knew how crazy collectible this deck is, I wanted to try and get one for my GF.  One thing we have in common is cards!  She plays solitaire fairly religiously, and her favorite deck is the Monarch deck.  Our anniversary is 11/11, so I thought it would be so cool to get her that deck for our anniversary!

This was also before I knew that each card face has a different ingredient, and wouldn’t work well for solitaire anyway lol.  There’s one on eBay right now, however!

Hey and thanks so much!  I’m just trying out Tapatalk for the first time and the bazaar didn’t show up until I searched for it.  I haven’t been around in a while and KNEW there was a B/S/T area but figured I was just an idiot.  Turns out, I’m just an idiot in general :)

Reposted over there :)  thanks again!

Hi everyone!  A buddy of mine is trying to complete his Monarch set.  He’s now searching for the elusive Monarch variant custom printed for Eleven Madison Park.  That will give him the whole set,  aside from the Uber rare First Printing of Monarchs of course ( where only 144 weren’t trashed).

I know this deck doesn’t come around often, but I’m starting my search here.  If anyone knows of one for sale, or wants to sell one, really any lead at all (and wouldn’t mind sharing:), I’d love to know!

Please feel free to DM me if you’d prefer :)  Thanks so much.  I’d love to find it for the guy.  If I can’t afford them myself, the next best thing is helping a fellow card man :)  Thanks guys!

For those unaware...

There’s a incredibly talented chef who either owns or co-owns the incredible restaurant Eleven Madison Park.  I don’t know the whole story, but the chef had Theory11 print them some custom Monarchs.  I’ve only seen the tuck, which is Essentially the Silver deck but stamped with “Made Exclusively for Eleven Madison Park”.  Truly one of the Dream decks for Monarch fans :)

I always make it a point to browse Walmart's Celebrations department for Rider Back Color variations.  When I started collecting in 2015, I learned about the dual Fashion Decks that seem to be exclusive to Walmart.  Something about colors inspired by the trends seen during Fashion Week somewhere (can't remember where).

In 2015 there was Daybreak and Marsala, 2016 had Indigo and Coral.  I'd been looking online for any news on 2017 Fashion Decks, but hadn't found anything.  Last night, in the Celebrations department, I saw two brand new decks.  One is a weird Gold/yellow on black, and the other is a two toned blue, kind of like a dark turquoise and aquamarine.  The faces are what you'd expect from a Fashion deck, the back's colors trickling through the courts and pips.

I've since spent a ton of time trying to get some info on them, at the very least the official "colors" of the deck.  The have thin borders, two full size jokers, a double backer, and were printed May 2017.  Based on how they faro, it also seems like a Traditional Cut was applied, at least on the two decks I've opened.  They were US$2.97 per deck.

I know there's waaaay more exciting decks out there lol, but the Fashion Decks sparked my interest in collecting, so I'll always make sure to keep them in my collection.  I bought those decks before I even knew a custom card industry existed!  Has anyone seen any official news on these?  I've emailed USPCC, so hopefully they'll get back to me this upcoming week :)

11
Photos.  The one pic of the two decks' barcodes the oddball deck in question is on the top.  The only way I could upload a photo was by taking a screenshot of the photos I sent my friend in Discord, and I only had these.  I don't know how to take photos less than 100kb :(

12
Wow, interesting fact about the ad card!  This ad card is a "Play by the rules" and on the bottom left is printed 138-0400-P.  So, it looks like it's at least from 2000, right?  I found it weird I can't find a Print Code Dating Table that indicates the "B" letter was used after 1996.  Did USPCC use random print codes here and there without big runs?  At any rate, the cards handle gorgeously.  definitely worth the $8 lol.

But, I've stumbled upon a mystery that I've spent countless time trying to figure out.  I have one Red blue seal deck that has a tuck box unlike any other blue seal I own, which arent many, but it's still odd.  The colors are different, and the UPC is on the left side of the bottom when looking at the tuck from the front.  The font is differen, the cellophane is super loose, and the outer part of the blue seal is more faded then the others.  The "spade" logo on the front is different overall, but most noticeably the stars are smaller.  At first I thought it could be a long flap, but I found a post on the site that said long flap tucks have glued seams on both sides, which this one does not.  I'm also thinking it could be a knock off, which still I wouldn't be too upset with as it would be cool to have that in my collection.

A friend I chat with through Discord took pictures of all his Blue Seals, and nothing compares to his either - long flap or otherwise.  I'm close to just opening the darn thing out of the burning frustration I've run into! Lol.  I'm from Long Island NY, and spending a couple weeks in the summer there, so I was even planning to take the deck to some magic shops along the way hoping for more info, like Tannens or something.  Here's a couple pics, and maybe you have some insight Don?  I'd really appreciate it.  I've exhausted my research capabilities.  In all photos the deck in question will be on the right, with a comparison Blue seal on the left.  The deck on the left is identical to the deck I originally asked about in the post, and every other deck I've found thus far.  Thank you so much, Don.
Edit: I'm on my iPad and took 5 photos but the images exceed 1000mb.  I'm going to have to take pictures another way and I'll upload immediately in another response

13
Sorry, Don. 😔

14
Thanks!  I saw that, but generally don't trust buying anything from Taiwan.  I'd imagine they pop out a bunch of fakes over that way lol

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Unexpected Blue Seal Purchase...1996?
« on: March 27, 2017, 01:20:32 PM »
Hello.  I recently purchased my first few decks of Ohio made Rider Backs.  I opened one deck, and I'm shocked to see a printing code starting with "B".  All the dating charts I can find list 1996 as the most recent year USPCC used that letter.  Is this an absolute guarantee that thisbdeck was printed in 1996?  I'm wondering if I'm missing something here.  There's a card advertising a travel discount that says it expires in 2011.

Being new to collecting, and especially new to any older decks, I'm fascinated with this.  If this deck really was printed in 1996, that's just awesome! Lol. I was 12, and could've been playing a game with my family using cards from this same run.  Plus...the quality!  The feel of this deck is unlike anything else I own.  I have 5 more red decks and one black deck.  I'm trying to find some Tallys printed in Ohio but no such luck...yet.  Thanks!

16
Just a quick update.  My beloved Black decks with the 2015 CR are listed on Murphy's website.  Good to know :)

http://www.murphysmagic.com/product.aspx?id=36423

17
Well, Don, the deck I'm speaking of doesn't have a date code on the Ace or anywhere else.  There's two full size, full color identical Jokers.  It's a Black Fan Back, not reversed, and it comes with a double backer and the aforementioned "poker hand card thing" lol.  I don't know the technical name for them.  The only date is the copyright date of 2015 on the bottom of the tuck.  I also canceled the blue seal Tallys.  I couldn't bring myself to pay $60 for two decks of cards.  Maybe next month :(

I think you are referring to the Black Tally Ho Fan Back in this eBay listing:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Black-Fan-Back-Deck-Tally-Ho-Playing-Cards-Poker-Size-USPCC-Limited-New-Sealed-/351480780132?hash=item51d5e31564:g:W-sAAOSwrklVaOfa

The listing says it was made by Murphy's Magic and has a double backer and poker guide (poker hand card thing), so I am assuming it is the same deck...there are other listings that offer it for a little less ;)

Thanks for the info on that.  They do look a lot like the other ones I've seen in magic shops, but I don't remember them having a poker hand ranking card in them.  I recall them having a blank facer and a double backer.

Murphy's lists them as made exclusively for them and prices them at $7 a pack - but Murphy's is a wholesaler only and doesn't sell at retail to the public.  You'd have to get a magic shop to order it for you at the customary markup for profit margin.

Well, on every website I've seen them listed (including that eBay post obv), they say they were produced by Murphy's Magic.  I sent an email to someone there in hopes they could tell me, but I haven't heard back.  I buy them from Penguin, and I start hyperventilating if my supply gets below 4 decks lol.  I actually went as far to ask them how their stock was, because if it was low I was going to buy as much as I could.  They told me they had plenty, and they don't see any reason for me to "buy a lifetime supply" lol.  I love those guys.

Aloys Studio has produced both Black Fan Backs and Circle Backs.  The former being part of their Rose Series.  They circle Backs come with a blank and a DB, while the Fan Backs only come with a Blank.

The Black decks with the 2015 copyright, which we believe are produced by Murphy's,  are of amazing quality.  Twice as good as the Aloys' product.  I put an ad up on here trying to find the Circle back version, and I've scoured the web to no avail.  At any rate, thanks for the info and convo on my fav decks :)

18
So, I saw these on eBay and thought they were part of the series put out by Aloys Studio a few years ago that also included 5 other colors.  The pictures were limited, so I messaged the seller and had him clarify that they were not produced by Aloys Studio.  I wasn't interested in that particular deck.  He told me they were produced by a different overseas company.

So I bought them, and upon receiving the deck today, and comparing it to a review by VJose32, they appear to be the very deck I was told it wasn't!  Before I contact the seller about a return, I just wanted to triple check.  I'm pretty upset, especially considering the seller appears to be pretty big time, even having some of his own decks produced under the name "Merz67".

To me, the gold seal and the way the corners fade away on the back of the tuck are dead giveaways these are the Aloys deck.  Thanks for any info.  And if this is the deck I was told it wasn't, I'd steer clear away from that seller.  Either he is completely clueless, or straight up lied to me.  I feel as though it's the latter!

Item:  Tally Ho Circle Back - Black
Minimum Offer: It looks like the original retail was $7, so I guess that's the minimum I'd pay.
Quantity: Depending on the price, I would take anything from 1-6 decks.
Country: USA

Hi!  I'm trying to find the Black Circle Back deck that, from what I've read, was ordered by Murphy's Magic.  The Fan Back version has a copyright date of 2015 on the box, and has no barcode.  They come with two full size colored jokers, a double backer, and a card with poker hands on one side, and the back design on the other.  I'm assuming the Circke Back version has the same ingredients :)

I've found the Fan Back on a bunch of sites, and it instantly became my favorite handling deck.  I've never tried to buy or sell anything through a forum before, but I buy and sell on eBay here and there.  I'd really appreciate any info anyone has on where to find these ellusive Circle Backs.  Thanks!

21
I know this is an old post, but seeing as my favorite deck is pictured here I figured I would join the discussion :-)
The fan back without the bar code looks to be my favorite deck.  If it is, it has a double backer and a "poker hand" card.  The poker card has the back design on the other side.  The circle back version is the deck I've been trying to find.  I'm jealous lol.  A couple sites that sell the fan back list Murphy's Magic as being the client that had the deck printed.  I sent an email to someone there, but haven't heard back.  I guess I'm not surprised.  After all, I'm just a card geek and not a retailer so why would they take their time for me.  :|
It's interesting that there isn't a bar code!  I've been through 10 decks and  I never noticed until I read this!  I'd love to own the other fan back too.  But being a Cincinatti deck, this picture will probably be the closest I get to one :'-(. Although I do have a couple Blue Seal Circle Backs coming soon :).

22
Definitely a massive..ahem...fan of Tally Ho Fan Backs.  I'm hooked on the Black decks that are floating around.  I think Murphy's Magic had them custom printed, but I'm not positive.  I just opened a couple decks of the custom colors Aloy Studios had printed.  I don't like the feel as much as the Black decks, but the full bleed colors look awesome. I'm buying the rest of that Rose series next week; Pink, Purple, Green, Orange, and White.  Some fun colors for springtime magic and cardistry.  I really like the "Rose" theme they came up with.  It'll make for a nice wall mount display once I figure out the best way to do it :)

23
Just in case anyone every stumbles on this after a search...

A couple days ago they updated the product info page.  Their is now no mention of FB's at all unless you go to buy them, then it's set up as it's always been.  However, there's a new comment by a representative stating FB's have not been discontinued and they are still manufacturing them.

I think I was the only one in the world that picked up on this, or cared lol.

Playing Card Plethora / Tallly Ho Fan Back's Have Been DISCONTINUED?!?!
« on: January 16, 2017, 04:26:59 AM »
Well, on the Tally Ho product information page over at Bicycle's site there are a couple comments.  One from a customer asking if the Fan Back has been discontinued and another from Bicycle CONFIRMING that they have been discontinued and adding there should still be some available.

I called USPC and asked them about it, was put on hold, then told the Fan Back "has no discontinuation date at this time".

I know I mean nothing to USPC and they don't have to tell me jack squat, but if it was posted on the comment page and then I was told otherwise, isn't it safe to assume they are not discontinued?  The comment was posted in March 2016, so hopefully they've changed plans!

Any information from anyone?

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Collect for Fun? Or Profit?
« on: January 09, 2017, 01:38:56 PM »
You know, I've found that I love selling decks as it gives me something to do!

I had a bad back injury, and for a couple years I've been on SSDI and frankly, bored out of my skull.  I list decks on eBay not to make any money, but mainly for something to do!  For example, I just bought a brick of Penguin Black Tallys, and I'm selling a few decks in order to make the ones I use cheaper.  I typically open a deck a day and as we all know it gets expensive really fast!

I track all my purchases and sales with a simple excel spreadsheet, and the whole buying and selling process has helped fill the void I have from not working.  I went from Retail Management as a GM overseeing 35 employees and millions in sales...to overseeing my dirty laundry and AD card collection (I can't be the only one that's saved every ad card from every deck I've ever opened:).

There isn't much that can give the same feeling of happiness as a fresh deck of cards.
