Title: Homemade Flash Paper?
Post by: Joshua Robinson on June 17, 2013, 07:32:24 AM
So I am subscribed to a YouTube channel called "NightHawkInLight" and found one of his videos that is very interesting.

Homemade Flash paper. Obviously you would want to cut down the pieces to be a good size to make a good flame but not too small.

I don't know if the risk factor is worth the savings, really.  Flash paper isn't that expensive.

It is for me Don. I cannot buy it from overseas and I cannot get it cheap anywhere in Australia. .

Well, just remember, safety first...

I'm kinda surprised.  I mean, you're sort of close-ish to Japan, and I can't imagine there isn't a shop somewhere there that doesn't make it cheaply enough.  But then there is that shipping of flammables overseas and all that...  But still - were such a company to exist, I'd be surprised if they weren't stocking it in Australia somewhere, so it would be domestic mail order instead of overseas...  But what do I know, right?

It would have been interesting if he added the sulfuric acid to the potassium nitrate instead of the other way around.  ;D But the process seems pretty simple to me. It's also safe if you take the right precautions.

For anyone interested in the chemistry, the reaction is

4KNO3 + 2H2SO4 --> 4HNO3 + 2K2SO4 to produce the nitric acid, and

3HNO3 + C6H10O5 --> C6H8(NO2)2O5 + 3H2O to produce the nitrocellulose.

By the way, the small crystals that you see in the liquid he pours on the cotton is the K2SO4. Potassium sulfate.

No one should attempt this work. I would counsel anyone not trained in chemistry to avoid nitration reactions. Even those who know what they are doing can have problems. I know from personal experience after 29-years in a chemical R&D lab as a technician. If you can't buy flash paper, just live without it. It is nowhere near worth the risk.

And there you have it, folks.  Not safe.

I don't care what kind of effect you're trying to achieve with your magic - if it's good, it will stand on it's own without the fire effects; if it's not, it is really worth your well-being (or your life, or SOMEONE ELSE'S LIFE) to create?

I say this as a friend, Josh - don't do it, it isn't worth it.

Looking back, DelMagic's right. This should probably be done in an industrial setting, or a laboratory setting at the very least.

But if done with a fume hood and protection equipment, it shouldn't prove to be too deadly. The important part is to let the reaction fully occur and to not introduce glycerol products in ANY form (e.g. soap residue). The result could add an unwanted explosive element to your performance. And you don't even know if your flash paper is safe without igniting it.

In the end, it's still best to buy it yourself.

Soap residue isn't exactly something that's easily spotted, either.  You miss one small bit of it, and your flash can become more of a boom.  Also, I know there's lots and LOTS of laws regarding the sale and handling of explosive chemicals in the US; I can't imagine it's that much different in Australia.  The chemical components for flash paper are likely commonly found in some improvised explosives.

You can create flash paper a thousand times the right way - but it only takes once doing it the wrong way for things to get sideways and pear-shaped.  Not worth the gamble.

...and another spammer get's caught in Curt's highly-efficient web.  Thanks, Curt!

Was ANYONE crazy enough to actually attempt making the flash paper?  The stuff in the video isn't even really paper - it was made of patches of t-shirt fabric...
