The Discourse New Deck Report
By Rob Wright
Report data compiled 12/15/2013

I have asked Don to find someone to take over the NDR.
Unfortunately, I do not have enough time to properly keep this updated. I may also have to take a short hiatus from the forum due to a personal issue.

I want to thank Don for allowing me to play with this for a few months. It's been a pleasure.

For the next person that takes this over, I say good luck. I'll be happy to help if you have a question.

To everybody else. I hope you have enjoyed my updates. I started with a solid foundation from Don, and tried to make it even better.

Thank you to all.

Hello everyone,
I hope you all had a great thanksgiving, I know I did. I just wanted to let everyone know that I'm very sorry for the delay on the cards. Mpc had a few issues with some of the graphics so I had to do a few minor tweaks for them. I'm waiting on the final ok from them. They have been good with keeping up communication so I know everything will be done very soon. I will post another update as soon as I hear something from them. Thank you all again for being so patient and understanding with all of this. Happy holidays.

This is my first go at this sort of thing, and the delivery date of September was a bit... heroic.

Seelie Update
Hey guys, I know there's not been a lot of updates on this project, and I'm sorry about that. I've been really, really busy lately. However, a good chunk of what's keeping me busy has been work on Seelie.

Right now, I'm working as many hours as I can, but also taking the occasional moment to spend time with my two sons and wife. My parents have temporarily moved in with me to help with the duties that crop up with a newborn, as well as sometimes learning to play video games to keep my older son entertained when I disappear into the office to figure out how many envelopes I need to buy and how the Scallywags budget is doing (first answer: ~900, second answer: fine, we'll have everything in our warehouse shortly).

Also, some people have noticed that I do sometimes log into Kickstarter, but don't post an update. This is because a lot of times I'm just tallying up order numbers, or answering messages, or sometimes just glancing at another person's project. And yes, I am currently finishing up two other projects. I wanted to make sure everyone knew that I've cancelled all public appearances until these three projects are 100% done. I'm also not starting any new projects until these are finished. So yes, we're motivated to get this all out the door.

Sorry gang, this project got delayed much longer than I expected which include a lot of design changes, some of which I'm okay with and some of which I spent a good deal of time and energy pushing back on.  But it's done.  I finally got the final, final copies and agreed to the changes from legal.  So here they are.  I sign the contracts and it's off to printing.

*The Card Lounge*
*A Spotlight of a Project or Interview*

Welcome to the lounge this week, Peter Dunham and Linnea Gits, of Uusi

After four successful Kisckstarter projects. Uusi will launch their fourth of six planned playing card decks.

I emailed Peter earlier this week about doing this interview. This was his response.

Sure, we would love to take part and answer as many of the questions as possible. We're always more than happy to share our experience and knowledge as designers, and greatly appreciate the support and interest of the discourse forum members.

Here is two artist that are in the middle of finishing one project. Starting a new one. Oh! and running a business as well. So I say thank you to Peter and Linnea for taking time out of their busy schedule to answer questions for me.

As explained on the Uusi website.

Uusi is Finnish for “new”. You pronounce it “oosee”. You see?

About Uusi

Q: How did you come up with the name?

Peter has cousin's in Michigan's Upper Peninsula that he and his brothers have been fishing and hunting with for years. There is a large Finnish community there and all the guys in the family have given each other Finnish nicknames – Peter's is "Johan" – so when we started Uusi Peter wanted to find a Finnish word to name the company. We chose "Uusi" because it was a new venture for us and because that feeling of discovery is a huge part of our creative drive.

Q: What is your backgrounds/education? What did you do before Uusi?

Peter went to school for Fine Art. He has a BFA from Northern Illinois University.  I went to school for journalism at Drake University in Iowa. I had always wanted to go to school for art, but my parents were against it. I met Peter over the summer of my third year in college apprenticing at his studio in Chicago and never went back to Drake.  We worked as artists showing in galleries in Chicago, NY & LA and drifted into commercial design through imagery, objects and paintings commissioned for the furniture design company Herman Miller for their headquarters in Zeeland MI and then their National Design Showrooms around the country. That led to another commercial design job, and before we knew it, design work was almost the only thing we were doing. In 2010 we started our own design studio, Uusi.

Q: Do you have other people work in your studio, teach, mentor, have interns, or anything like that?

We have two part time assistants, Colleen & Annie, who help us with the day to day office and customer service work and from time to time we have interns from Columbia College and the Art Institute.  Both Peter and I guest lecture for the design department at Columbia College and our studio is part of their class field trip program for Design 101 students at Columbia College.

Q: You are partners in Uusi. Are you partners in life?

     Yep, we are married :)

Q: Are both of you a part of the card projects?

Yes! As the Lead Creative at Uusi, my job is to concept the sketches and direction of the deck. Then I bring them to Peter, we talk about which ideas are the strongest, land on one and then I go off and sketch out the initial look.  When we are ready to create the final artwork we divvy it up according to each other's artistic strengths. Peter focused on sculpture when he was in school and has incredible drafting skills and a very steady hand for line work. He worked on all the costumes (and always all the weaponry!) for BB, BB Redux & RO.  As a painter I have a much looser, more expressive line,  so I usually create all the faces. I painted all the artwork for Bohemia and now, Pagan.  The decks all are Art Directed by Peter – he'll come in and say things like "No way would there be a sword like that in the 1100's – you need to use one that looks like this."  Or, "You need to make that King's chin a lot shorter." Exciting stuff like that ;)

Q: Peter has the wood/workshop. Linnea do you help out in the shop? or is it pretty much his baby?

     That is all Peter's world!!

Q: What got you interested in designing playing cards?

Peter collected cards for quite a while – mostly old, European decks he found on ebay – for inspirational imagery.  In 2010 I had done a card deck for a client and after it was finished Peter thought it would be cool for both of us to work on a deck for our company, Uusi.  We finished it in the spring of 2012 and launched it on Kickstarter shortly thereafter. Blue Blood completely took us by surprise. We learned so much on that deck and from all the backers and card community and Peter wanted to take all that information and apply it again to another deck. He likes to work through a genre to really understand it and that was how we came up with a six deck series.

Q: You are planning 6 card projects. Any chance of doing more(my fingers are crossed)?

We get asked that question almost daily!! It is incredibly flattering that you and other people would like to see more decks by Uusi!  We do not have plans to make anymore Uusi decks after our sixth deck, but we have been approached by Anthropologie to design a deck for them and there are some very interesting collaborations that are on the horizon for 2014 that may be exciting.

Q: How long does it usually take to design each deck?

You know...it is hard to say exactly as we work on a lot of projects at the same time at the studio. Working like this it takes about two months from concept to final artwork and final file prep.  Some decks have gone faster than others – it just takes as long as it takes to make it right!

Q: Did you have the ideas for each deck planned from the start?

No. But we knew we wanted each deck to have a unique look unto itself. Changing the medium we use each time has really helped push that direction and guides the look of the deck.

About Pagan

Q: What was the inspiration for this deck?

Our love of the forests and lakes of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. That feeling of wilderness is intense when you are deep in a forest and when we thought about expressing that feeling visually it took us to the Pagan era in history.

Q: You usually have the card stand, and custom brick box. I assume you will on this one, but any unique wood items for this one?

We stopped doing a custom printed brick box after Bohemia.  Not sure if we will do one again...but Peter loves creating unique case goods for each project. We will definitely have a new box for Pagan, along with some other surprises :)

Q: You mentioned having a pre-launch and give away on Facebook?

Just had it today(Friday)! It will go through the weekend. We pick the winner on Monday. We thought it would be cool to give away one deck (in both colors) from the series to date to celebrate the half-way point in our six deck series and the launch of deck #4, Pagan!

Just go to Uusi's Facebook page. "like" their post, and you can win this.

The future of Uusi

Q: You have 2 more card projects. Do you have a direction you are going with them?

We started sketches and concepts for deck five already but nothing concrete yet.  I think we may be taking a bit of a break after "Pagan" to focus on other work at the studio and reload our creative ideas for winding up the series!

Q: Has anybody approached you to design a custom deck for them? Would you consider it?

Yes! We get a lot of requests, but so far there have been only two or three that are a good fit for us.  Time will tell which ones end up making it into the world.

Q: Kickstarter has seemed to be a pretty good outlet for your card projects. Do you have any other type projects in mind for Kickstarter?

We've definitely thought about it, but right now we are just focusing on completing the playing card series for Uusi!

Q: Don Boyer is a huge presence on the Discourse. Anything you would like to expand about how he has helped you?

We were big fans of Don's posts on The Discourse before we worked together so it was awesome when he agreed to work with us on Bohemia. His knowledge of the card market, its history and the many ways cards are used professionally is a HUGE bonus for us when we design a deck. With Pagan, when we told Don we wanted to do a borderless back he was excited and really pushed us to keep tweaking the design until it worked for magicians and card players. It was one thing to make it look cool, a whole different thing to make it playable. Without Don's technical help we wouldn't have ended up with the playable design we now have.

Q: Anything else you would like to add about the future of Uusi?

We are excited to be working with people we respect and on projects we enjoy and have loved meeting all of the people in this community who have made this series meaningful and we hope you keep us on your radar even after our six deck series comes to an end! I know Peter will continue to add to the card cases on the site and we hope to surprise you with a new venture at Uusi in the future!

A few final words

Me: I did carpentry work for 20 years before changing my career to my present job. I do miss sometimes being able to step away from a project, and say I built that.  I try to do wood projects when I can to help fill that gap. I'm not an artist, but I do understand the passion you have for what you do. It shows in the work you put out. Congratulations on all of your success. I know this one will be just as successful as the others. Beautiful work.

Thanks, Robert! It's awesome that you had experience with woodworking – I definitely understand that feeling of being able to say, "I built that".  Also it's great to have people understand the passion we put in to our work. It really is the driving force behind everything we do at Uusi.

Best regards,

Peter

I want to thank Linnea and Peter again. Best wishes for your new project. I can feel my wallet getting lighter already.

Stellar work you're doing here, Rob.  I'm going to let you create a new topic to replace the existing 2013 Releases topic, so as decks from KS and others finally get released, you'll be able to place them there right away.

Awesome stuff.  I love the pictures!

We kind of have that already - check out tuckcase.com!  The site is new, but it's rapidly becoming a solid source of deck information.  No need to reinvent the wheel if the one we have is working just fine, right?  :))

They're NOT affiliated.  Scott's a member, though.  As I said, why reinvent the wheel?

Prior to him, there was a really sweet blog on Wordpress called 52Cartes by a Frenchman named Remi.  That was a GREAT site, but something happened a handful of months ago and no one has heard what, or at the least hasn't revealed it - the site is gone.

*The Card Lounge*
*A Weekly Spotlight of a Project or Interview*

Welcome to the lounge this week, Chris Ovdiyenko

After a very successful first card project Calaveras Chris has started his new project Oracle. The project started on October 9th and will end November 8th. After only 4 days in, he is already over $13,600 of his $20,000 goal. You can get the cards, along with matching woodcut prints and t-shirts on Kickstarter.Chris was very gracious to take time out of his busy schedule, and answer some questions for me.

Q: Chris, I'm sure you get this question a lot, but what got you interested in designing cards?
A: I'm a creative director and missed designing and actually making things. I also collected playing cards and thought, why not? I had such a great experience with the Calaveras project that I decided to keep going and launch a second deck.

Q:  What is your background in design?
A: I actually went to art school for metal sculpture. That didn't really pan out for me, so I made my way into design.

Quick explanation of woodcut prints.
The process is to have the designs laser etched onto wood plates, I ink the plates, then run them through my press on museum-grade artist paper.

Here's an example of the detail this process makes possible (art is from my last project)

Q: Is making a woodcut print similar to the way a rubber stamp works?
A: It's similar, but takes a lot more artistry to pull a consistent even print. The press makes that a lot easier.

Q: I noticed the picture of the press. Thinking about other designers that may want to try this. As far as set up, and price of getting wood etched. Would you consider it a long term investment, or could someone get started fairly cheap?
A: It's definitely an investment. The press cost about 4K, the drying racks are about 1K each and I needed to get 2 of them. The rest is fairly reasonable in cost (inking station, inks, paper). But it was considerable setup.

Q: Would you possibly consider doing this on the side for other designers?
A: Probably not, I have a resource for creating the plates, but it's not the fastest process especially in quantity.

Q: Is it possible to do more than 1 color on these prints?
A: It is, but it complicates things in terms of setup and also execution. Basically it requires a VERY accurate registration system and doubles the cost in terms of plates and also print runs and drying time. The inks I use take about 5 days to dry completely. So basically it comes down to cost - I think I would try it on a future project to see if people would go for that, but with Oracle I didn't want to complicate production since I need to fulfill on Calaveras at the same time.

Q: Anything else you would like to add about the process?
A: Just that it’s really amazing that the KS community has supported it. Printmaking in general has really suffered in recent years as just about anyone can snag an image and hit the print button. It's cool to know people understand the difference between commercial printing and artistic printing.

Q: The Oracle Project. How did you come up with the theme of this deck?
A: Honestly, about a month and a half ago I was looking at buying a t-shirt with a talking board design on it. I fell in love with the look and mentioned to my wife that it would make a great deck of cards but there wasn't enough material to support a whole deck (royals being this biggest problem). She had been reading about the Spiritualist movement and suggested I read a little too. So I did, and I realized that it wasn't just going to be possible, it was going to be completely unique, amazing, and fit together really well. It all just fell into place and with Halloween coming up, I wanted to get it going as soon as I could. The hardest part has been figuring out how to give the deck a spooky edge without being cheesy. I'm feeling pretty good that the deck is getting it right on both fronts.

Q: Do you plan on adding a second version during the project? Possibly a Bicycle branded deck?
A: I'm considering it, but there is already so much type on the box, I'm worried that it'll conflict   having the Bicycle logo. I also kinda like the idea of launching projects without leaning on the Bicycle brand too heavily.

Q: Other possible stretch goals?
A: I've got some ideas, but it's probably better to take them one at a time.

Q: About the future. Do you still plan to do the LE Black Calaveras deck?
A: Yep, but I have a card project that will come after Oracle and will take a few months to get ready for. I don't want to say too much, but it will push my artistic abilities to my own limits. It's in a style that uses scratchboard like I have been, but is SUPER difficult to pull off. I'm really excited to try though and I plan on it going live on KS around April.

Q: Both the Calaveras and oracle decks have kind of a dark theme.  Do you think you will stay in this style?
A: Probably not, my next deck idea isn't going to be as dark, and I'd hate to be known for only doing "dark" decks. It's a weird thing though - people start to know you for one thing and it can be easy to get categorized. I don't think any artist wants to be "typecast."

Q: Anything else you would like to add?
A: Just that I'm so excited to be running another project on KS and love this community!

I want to thank Chris for taking the time to answer my questions. I emailed Chris earlier in the week asking him to do an interview. He said he had just launched the project, and would be happy to send some information. He didn't know me, or who I was. For all he Knew I am just some crazy nut fan. So again Thank you. I'll leave you with a few pictures of the project.

Sorry to everyone that this has not been updated in a couple weeks. I had a few issues with my home. Had to replace my heating system. In the process found out there was damage to my home as well. In the process of fixing it, I pulled a muscle in my shoulder (thank god for flexeril, and vicodin). And of course my dog ate my homework

If you are a designer, or have a project, and want it spotlighted. PM me here at the Discourse.

Rob Wright - Nice work but this could be so much better.  I do find myself coming here more often since badpete69 got fired from the UC list.  This thread has to much scrolling down and clicking.  I should be able to see and get into a Kickstarter in one click.  How hard would it be to put the [Kickstarter] [Kickstarter]  thingamajigs on the forum?

Alex doesn't allow those widgets on the board because he feels the steps needed to do so would leave the board vulnerable to cyber attacks.

Can we at least put them in order to when the Kickstarter closes.  Like first to close to last to close.  I hate to bitch but it seems like the "Successfully funded Kickstarter Projects" is like a tapeworm that gets longer and longer.  It sorta needs its separate thread.  People can go to that thread to check up on the status of their order.  Then once we know the decks or sent we should have a Kickstarter graveyard thread.  So people can do research and see how other people did theirs.  Lastly, there should be a scam thread for all the Kickstarters that were successful that did not deliver.  I like going to the Founders Deck every once in a while to check out the comments.  Yes I was scammed too.    http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/dodsr/founders-playing-cards?ref=card

You wanna jump in and do the job?  It's not as easy as it sounds, my friend.  Rob's still working on getting things current.  Give him time.  Projects ARE listed in order of closing date, last time I looked.

We have a "Kickstarter graveyard."  It's called "2013 Deck Releases..."  Rob keeps track of undelivered scam projects in the NDR, with occasional updates - assuming there's actually something to report.

Sprouts
1 Right now there in alphabetical order. I could change it to dates- then you would bitch that its not alphabetical.

2 Yes the funded deck list is long- if you have a problem with that. I suggest you go to each project page and tell the creators to get off their backsides, and ship their orders.

3 This isn't KS. If you want to check on the status of your order- GO TO KS!

4 The shipped decks will be added to the 2013 list before the end of the year.

5 A scam thread would be great. Don, I think you have a volunteer!

I'm happy to help out here on the Forum, and I appreciate that Don thought of me to do this, BUT I do work a full time job. I would like to do a lot more with this, but it takes a little time to write the code.

Last night I stayed up late playing poker with Tarot cards. I got a full house and four people died.

OK, Sprouts, you now have a mission - make a thread on KS "successful failures"; decks that were funded in full but never fully delivered long past their deadline.  You write it and if I like it, I'll make it sticky.

Thanks everyone for your patience and for the kind words and support from those regarding the funeral and subsequent estate settlement.  I have finished a long and tiring process and I'm happy to finally return to work and some sense of normalcy.  I am picking up where I left off with shipping and hopefully you will get your decks soon.

comment by creator 11/7/2013 I know, I know... I do apologize for the delay.
This is my first go at this sort of thing, and the delivery date of September was a bit... heroic.
I should have the cards from USPCC in the next week or so, and it should only be a couple
days for me to get everything packaged up and delivered. Hang tight! =)

Update #8
 Nov 19, 2013

Final Changes and delays
Sorry gang, this project got delayed much longer than I expected which include a lot of design changes, some of which I'm okay with and some of which I spent a good deal of time and energy pushing back on.  But it's done.  I finally got the final, final copies and agreed to the changes from legal.  So here they are.  I sign the contracts and it's off to printing.
