Magic Cartoon Deck (Magic Makers)

The Magic Makers version of the classic Card Toon deck

Overview

This trick deck is Magic Makers version of the original Card Toon deck by Dan Harlan, and features different art and animations from other versions.  All you need is the trick deck and some instructions, and you're set to go.

Effect

The effect is a great stop-motion animation type effect, and is easily one of the more memorable magic tricks I do.  The spectator may announces any card of his free choice, with no force involved, and this card is set aside.  You then riffle through the deck, producing a stop motion animated effect.

The climax of the animation?  A reveal of the freely chosen card!  This animation concept is both surprising and entertaining!

See the effect performed with the "pro brand" version of the deck from Magic Makers here:

Artwork

The artwork in this Magic Makers version is different than Dan Harlan's original, which featured a stickman animation. In Card Toon 1 a stickman magician pulls the selected card out of a hat, while in Card Toon 2 a stickman magician is a circus performer who flies out of a cannon and bounces off a wall holding the selected card. Personally I prefer the graphic design of the original version, but that's largely a matter of personal taste.   They're all great!  In the Magic Makers version there's an additional twist - if you get asked to repeat the trick, you can make the apprentice magician vanish with a "poof".  See Rob Stiff explain in this video, which features the Bicycle version of the deck from Magic Makers:

Difficulty

Especially when you personalize the apprentice magician and really get into the presentation and story-line, people love this effect and beg to see it again. The handling is not that difficult to do, and basically consists of a single and simple "move" that you will need to practice but should master relatively easily. Rather than just relying on the written instructions, it's worthwhile to check some videos which show how this is done.   Magic Makers does have an instruction page here.

Recommendation

Regardless of which version you prefer, spectators love the effect of the flip-board animation. While at times this entertaining feature can overshadow the magic of the final reveal, it almost always goes over well, and I often have people requesting to see it. While this deck is literally a one-trick pony, it is well worth the investment given the great reactions it produces.
