Bunko Bet (Magic Makers)

Arguably the #1 packet card trick of all time

Overview

Bunko Bet just another name for the popular Color Monte packet trick, which is the more well-known name that this top card trick is usually marketed under. An inferior and more confusing routine under the name 'This or That'? has been popularized with a viral video.

Effect

The routine itself features no less than seven surprising moments for the spectator, with the final revelation being the most impossible of them all - it really blows people away! The nice thing about it is that it has an interesting story to go along with it as well, and is best performed as the magician describing his own experience with a conman. Spectators love it!  See Rudy Hunter demonstrate the routine here:

Popularity

Bunko Bet / Color Monte is a well-known packet card trick that consists of just three cards when performed, and is arguably the very best and most powerful packet card trick on the market. Whenever magicians discuss their favourite packet tricks, Color Monte is nearly always mentioned multiple times. While this effect can be done with standard cards, using a blue and red diamond simplifies the effect and makes it considerably stronger, and I highly recommend getting these cards, along with an instructional DVD like the one included here.

Contents

This version from Magic Makers comes with the three cards needed for the effect, along with an extra bonus card (so you can vary the final reveal), plus an instructional DVD featuring Rudy Hunter.

Difficulty

This is not an easy trick to learn, and will be beyond the scope of beginner magicians, since it requires a couple of sleights that need to be executed very cleanly. So I can only recommend this for intermediate magicians. If you're not already familiar with how to do the effect, you should get a version that comes with an instructional DVD explaining how to do the moves required, like the one by Rudy Hunter that is included here.

Recommendation

Bunko Bet (aka Color Monte) is well worth the effort for the intermediate magician to learn and master, and comes highly recommended.  It usually sells for $5-10, and considering that this includes an instructional DVD, that's excellent value.
