Deck Reviews! / Video Review: TOP 10 decks from Kings Wild Project
« on: September 22, 2017, 11:01:52 PM »
video count down:

If you’re a fan of playing cards, Jackson Robinson should be a household name. He’s an incredibly talented illustrator and designer who took his love of currency to playing cards. His best-known deck, the Federal 52 Deck (were you one of the 2,798 original backers?), exceeded its funding goal on Kickstarter by $141,166.

He puts striking intricacy into the design and extreme care in every minute detail.

MSRP: $ 25
Skill Level: Intermediate
DVD Run time: 1 hour 36 minutes

Type of effect:  Sam the Bellhop style routine

Manufacturer's Write Up: International stage Illusionist, Landon Swank, created The Ace Hut over fifteen years ago. He has performed it on 5 continents and in over 40 countries! This unique take on a full deck story offers options for beginners, intermediates, and professionals alike.

In collaboration with renowned musician, Toby-Joe Reilly, Swank's original poem was transformed into a Soulful, Bluesy cover. This unique feature allows options for the performer to either recite the poem, or simply press the play button and focus entirely on the manipulation. It enables the routine to be performed soon after watching the video!

For an in-depth breakdown of shuffles and deals that can take The Ace Hut to the next level, check out "The Real Deal" instruction video.

How accurate is the ad copy? Spot on
What's in the box?  DVD only and jacket has the deck stack printed. You also receive a link to the music used in the performance.

How are the production values: One steady cam, Landon performs against a white backdrop with a blue table. Nice clear mic – no background music.

Is it well taught: Landon teaches you two deck stacks – one for a more technical flourish version and one for a straight forward version.
Storage? Does it "pack flat?"  DVD only, no gimmicked cards are needed.
Difficulty / Skill level required:  Performer must be adept at a variety of false shuffles and cuts.
How much arts and crafts are involved? none
How practical is this in the real world? (can it really be done?) Yes, but you will need a table.

Magical Cardistry Bonanza / Magic Review: AMAZINK by Sebastien Calbry
« on: September 19, 2017, 04:11:02 PM »
Title: Amazink
Creator: Sebastien Calbry
MSRP: $ 35
Skill Level: all
Video run time: 26 minutes

Type of effect:  Flash reveal

Manufacturer's Write Up: The Gimmick for multiple effects!!!
Be creative!

With Amazink, you will have the possibility to make any writing appear and disappear on the back of a card, inserted into a badge holder, simply by waving it!
You will also be able to make revelations and changes (characters, shapes, etc.) based on your own inspiration, as the gimmick is fully customizable.
Finally, you will have the option to create a small token from your badge holder (coin, folded card, etc.) as seen in the video.

Sebastien Calbry creates an actual creative tool with this gimmick, and offers multiple possibilities.

It is possible, using a badge holder, to turn it into an extra support by drawing on it to then combine original effects.

What's in the box?  Badge holder with its lanyard, Trick card, Gimmicks, Business card with link to instructional video

How are the production values: Shot well against a white back drop, no microphone so it is a little echo-y.
Is it well made: It is well made, this is a sturdy prop

Is it well taught: The video is shot in French with English subtitles.  The subtitles for me were hard to read, the text dances around the screen from top to bottom and also changes color from black to white to red.
Storage? Does it "pack flat?"  It is what it looks like, no extras
Does it "play big?" this is a nice reveal that can get a good reaction when paired with the right effect
Difficulty / Skill level required:  All skill levels
How much arts and crafts are involved? You will need to “draw” or “write” your own predictions
How practical is this in the real world? (can it really be done?) Very real world possible
Overall score: let's toss out the traditional score of 1-10 and make this something that we all can appreciate and understand.

My thoughts Ultimately this feels like his last two effects Offset and Badge came together and had a baby, even at the beginning of the video he admits that this is technically “offset 2” – also I don’t see that wearing a lanyard like that looks “normal” it almost screams “gimmick” unless you were wearing it at a convention where EVERYONE was wearing a lanyard.

Kameleon Cards is one of many designs and the first to come to life by Cardistry Collective. Cardistry Collective was founded because of a deep love for playing with paper (Playing Cards), and an amazing community of people. The Kameleon deck is the first, inspired by one of their favorite reptiles more specifically the Ambilobe Chameleon from Madagascar. Their unique yellow and green colors really stand out in the world of playing cards but in the trees of Madagascar these animals are very hard to spot.

The Kameleon Playing Cards are a two way back design with a unique bright yellow, and neon green pattern. The bright yellow center, and neon green corners help this deck stand out while doing flourishes and fans.

show your support at

The OCULUS Deck is inspired by Pointillism. It features a full-bleed borderless design with bold and vibrant Reds and Blues. The Court Cards each have a radial design structure that gives them an abstract, yet familiar, look to them. The design is also meant to flow through flourishes and allow for continuous displays that aren't possible with borders. In addition to allowing for table displays as well.

The faces are semi-custom with a carryover of the back design. The design comes from the center and works its way to the edges. The designers chose to leave the pips larger and easy to read allowing playability of the cards....for those times that people want to see us do more than just "shuffle". Making this a deck that can become part of your every day carry, as you can practice cardistry, magic and stealing money from your friends in a game of poker. The Ace continues the design and incorporates the Joker design.

Go and back this on kickstarter right now:

Magical Cardistry Bonanza / Magic Review: The Gift by Angelo Carbone
« on: September 14, 2017, 06:50:35 PM »
Title: The Gift
Creator: Angelo Carbone
Publisher: Murphys Magic
MSRP: $ 75
Skill Level: All
Video one: 7 mins, main video 39 minutes, bonus idea 3 minutes

Type of effect:  Prediction prop (multiple out utility)

Manufacturer's Write Up: Rarely does a secret get published that ticks all the boxes (no pun intended).  A unique concept from master creator Angelo Carbone, The Gift is an effect with a method so clever that you'll feel a giddy urge to reveal the method to your spectators. We don't suggest that you actually do this.

The spectator deals the cards face up and stops wherever they want. They open the gift box themselves and remove the prediction inside. The prediction will ALWAYS be correct!

Bonus routine included where your prediction is torn in half, and half of it is in view the ENTIRE time before a card is selected. The other half is inside the box and, of course, both torn halves match perfectly!

The spectator and the box do the hard work, but you come out the winner.

Available in Standard and in Limited Edition Gold

Give your spectators "The Gift" of an impossible moment!

How accurate is the ad copy?
What's in the box?
- The Gift Box
- Deck of Cards
- 40 min instruction video with Angelo Carbone
- The ability to perform a miracle

Key points: The Gift is a self-contained, precision-crafted device that makes the effect easy to perform. It doesn't use any indexes or loads, and resets in seconds. Open the box, set up the device, and you'll be performing within minutes.
How are the production values: Murphy’s magic makes great videos – everything is well shot, well mic’d beautiful transitions. Artistically shot, with multiple settings al with perfectly clear and easy to follow instruction.
Is it well made: The gift is a beautiful and professionally made prop that does not look like a “magic prop” at all – it actually looks like a gift box, or a decoration box you’d find at a craft store.

Is it well taught: Of course you will learn the initial effect and everything else you need to learn and prepare for to perform the trick in the advertisement. Angelo will also share several other ideas.
Storage? Does it "pack flat?"  No. This is a 3 x 3 inch cube
Does it "play big?" Predicting the future from a seemingly free choice? Yea, this will get great reactions.
Difficulty / Skill level required:  Not difficult
How much arts and crafts are involved? None
How practical is this in the real world? (can it really be done?) Absolutely.
Overall score: let's toss out the traditional score of 1-10 and make this something that we all can appreciate and understand.

 Title: iCaan
Creator: James Went
Publisher: Big Blind Media
MSRP: $ 22
Skill Level: Beginner
Vido run time: 20 minutes

Type of effect:  Any Card to any number

Manufacturer's Write Up:
A deck of cards is genuinely shuffled by both the performer and a spectator, who then each select a card. These cards are lost back into the deck which is, again, shuffled.

The magician announces that despite all the shuffling he is convinced that the spectator's card is 'fourteenth' down from the top. With a flourish he reveals the fourteenth card - it IS the spectator's selection.

So far so good. But here is where iCaan moves into miracle territory. The magician names their selection (let's say 'Three Of Clubs') and asks the spectator to guess at which numbered position this card lies in the deck.

Whatever their answer, the spectator is told to take the deck and deal down to that number. The magician DOES NOT touch the deck. Impossibly the magician's 'Four Of Clubs' is found at the exact number named by the spectator!
James Went's spectacular routine has been an underground smash - utterly devastating magicians at conventions around the world. If well-read, professional magicians can be fried with iCaan, just imagine what it looks like to a 'muggle'!

How accurate is the ad copy? No deception
What's in the box?  Gimmicked deck of cards and the download code

Key points:
The spectator can name ANY number and iCaan will work
No memory work required
Includes three versions: James ultra clean original routine, An easier (almost self-working) handling, and Liam Montier's special super-easy alternative
How are the production values: Much like most BBM videos, same studio location (James is even wearing the same clothes he’s worn in Meditations and uses the same spectator) Shot well, mic’d well, good transitions.
Is it well made: The gimmick is very well made and there is a good chance you already own it.

Is it well taught: The plot is pretty simple, and requires virtually no sleights So between James and Liam Montier they offer you 3 solutions and everything is covered.
Storage? Does it "pack flat?"  Only a deck of cards is used.
Does it "play big?" the any card to any number plot is always a crowd pleaser.
Difficulty / Skill level required:  James has a few “fancy parts” in his presentation that are more for the skilled cardiciain, but Liam comes in at the end and offers a more simplified solution.
How much arts and crafts are involved? zero
How practical is this in the real world? (can it really be done?) yes
Overall score: let's toss out the traditional score of 1-10 and make this something that we all can appreciate and understand.

video review:

Premium high octane, apocalyptic playing cards. Inspired by Mad Max! 100% custom - Intricately illustrated over a period of 12 months.

Each of the court cards featured in our first two projects were distinct in character. Symbolic imagery scattered throughout the design forms a captivating mythological theme. This is apparent yet again in Dystopia - our courts cards are legends of the wasteland, muttering secret whispers across the stark desert landscape.

The tuck cases for Dystopia Playing Cards will be created by Clove St. Press. This company specialises in the practice of letterpress, to create exquisite works of art. Using specialised machines, Clove St. is able to produce beautiful rich hot foil stamping, as well as deep, prominent embossing on the tuck cases. Utilising premium black dyed paper stock, and high quality foil, Dystopia will be the prized possession in your collection.

Title: Cardio
Creator: Liam Montier
Publisher: BBM
MSRP: $ 22
Skill Level: Intermediate

Type of effect:  7 card tricks

Manufacturer's Write Up: Cardio is something of a 'concept album' - card tricks that are efficient, with a clear end picture, and all using nothing more than a regular deck of cards. No gaffs, gimmicks or shenanigans. Just grab any deck and you're ready to go.

Each of the seven tricks featured is a real 'do-er'. You'll be desperate to get out and fry people with these routines. In Liam Montier's inimitable style, they use simple, clear methods (well within the reach of most card handlers), and are super fun to perform.
What's in the box?  DVD only

Key points: These are not the “self-working” tricks that you are used to.

How are the production values: Bare bones DVD, just Liam and the camera man in the BBM magic library. No live performances, no spectators, just Liam and a deck of cards. It’s still well produced and everything you’d expect from BBM.
Is it well taught:

Back Hand Slap - The classic 'Slap' revelation updated and refreshed, as you sneak a spectator's card into their own hand... and then change all their other cards into a royal flush! The idea here was to revitalize something that lots of magicians know and learn early on (the slap revelation) and turbo-charge it, making it a full routine. One simple move set's it all up be-fore your spectator even knows you've started!

Twisted - This starts off with a 'Twisting The Aces' handling that I'm very proud of - there's no displacements or discrepan-cies, and all four turn over clean as a whistle. Then suddenly, the Aces reveal two chosen cards in a VERY unexpected way! It's a more technical routine than some of the others, but the moves are very well covered and justified, so it's a great one to learn to give you confidence with some essential but more challenging moves.

Reality Burp - In terms of sheer effect, this is hard to beat. There's so many changes that happen (a packet of cards ALL change into a selection, and then into a second selection, and then... to KINGS!!!). Then there's a LOVELY moment where they think the two cards under the card box are going to be the selections, but there's ANOTHER back-fire transposition. It's like card-karate!

The Hof - I've experimented with many handlings of the classic 'Hofzinser Ace Trick', but this is the solution I love the most. Framed as a packet trick, it combines simple ideas from Jack Parker and Roy Walton to make a very surprising revelation and transposition. It also makes a perfect trick to do once you have produced four Aces, so you can easily routine this into a set or act.

The Other Thing - This one I've worked on a lot over the years, and I love it! You take a borrowed shuffled deck, and show the four kings spread throughout the deck. Those same Kings immediately appear EVERYWHERE! One you pluck from your pocket, one from the table, one is under the card box and one INSIDE the card case! All with NO PREPARATION AND SIMPLE MOVES! Learn it and I bet you WILL perform it.

Swing of Things - This easy routine employs a necklace as a pendulum and can be played any way you want... serious magic... slightly hippyish weirdness... or lightly (with the TERRIBLE joke I tip!!). Don't overlook it because it doesn't use much technique - the impact and clarity of the end picture really hits hard.

Pop Hoff - A really unusual Hofzinser's Ace variation with a startling visual production and then a kind of reverse Blind Lem-on Aces, where the Aces in your hand suddenly fuse together to make the selection! It's clean, quick and efficient. You will get a lot of fun out of this one!
Difficulty / Skill level required:  These tricks go from “easy” to “knuckle busting:”

Overall score: let's toss out the traditional score of 1-10 and make this something that we all can appreciate and understand.

Title: Temporarily Out of Order
Creator: Patrick Redford
MSRP: $ 60
Skill Level: Intermediate
Page Numbers: 260

What is it: a book that introduces a new card stack “the redford stack.”

Temporarily Out of Order is focused on memorized deck magic and stack work. It reintroduces The Redford Stack to the world and explores its many possible transformative features. The Redford Stack may be easily arranged from either a shuffled deck or a freshly opened pack of cards. It also transforms into a Parallel Stack, Stay Stack/Mirror stack, Si-Stebbins Stack, an alternating red-black stack, and more. Amazingly, the exact same sequence that sets into Si Stebbins returns the deck to the Redford Stack! The stack appears random and yet is packed full of features.

What’s inside?

There are poker deals, blackjack deals, spelling effects, coincidence effects, faro effects, and much more. You'll learn a few of Patrick's favorite false shuffles, false cuts, and two sneaky deck switches! You'll also learn a handful of tricks that can be done while secretly setting up a borrowed deck into a stack! Many of the effects presented won't require the user to memorize the Redford order. This will allow it to be put to use immediately. In addition, there are many effects presented that aren't dependent on a specific memorized stack order, and may be performed with any memorized arrangement!

What are people saying about it?

"Patrick has pushed stack work to a different level. I love what he's done with the pseudo-memorized and the memorized deck." - Bob Cassidy

"Patrick fooled the crap out of me."  - Tom Gagnon

"I love the idea of a stack that you go in and out of. Bloody Genius! Only Patrick could create such a thing in such a practical way!"  - Ken Dyne

"Patrick has devised another beautifully constructed and truly deceptive set of routines surrounded by a wealth of knowledge. The title effect, 'Temporarily Out of Order,' is a reputation-making marathon of impossible moments. His work on the methods within this book are worth studying."  - Ben Seidman

"Loved it. The title effect, Temporarily Out of Order, is one of the best card tricks I have ever seen."  - Jon Armstrong

"Temporarily Out of Order is filled with gold."  - Mike Powers

What are some features?

You can get into the Redford stack from new deck order

Or move from other favorite stacks into this one

You can also move Redford BACK into new deck order

There is even a 2 phase black jack demo built into this

If you can do a perfect faro you’ll end up with pairs, flushes and four of a kinds – for fun poker demonstrations.

…and you can move the entire stack into red black red black by adjusting 3 cards
The first 26 cards are mated with the last 26

What’s inside the book?

I think there’s at least 30 tricks and routines, not to mention all the sections in this book about the various features and bells and whistles.  The title trick is a reputation maker and worth the price of the book alone.

Is it well made?

Hardbound, black and white, photographs and beautiful layout and design

Writing style

… is familiar – Patrick writes as though he is in the room with you talking to you, more like a friend and less like a teacher or how a manual or set of instructions would read.

What did I think?

Patrick Redford may just as well have the last word in memorized deck work. The rich content of this book and the brilliance of these tricks is worth any price. Well done!

Watch a trick from the book right now:

How is the Ultimate Marked deck allowed? If it uses a real 808 back? Doesn't this fly in the face of the "Bicycle doesn't manipulate their precious 808 design?"

Although the ad copy says "Rider Back 808-R" Bicycle Cards

What is an 808-R?

A "reader?" Is this a deck that Bicycle owns? hmmmmmm

Fontaine Cards started with one red deck on IndieGogo in 2013. Zach Mueller was 17 and by the end of the campaign he had raised 21K. He only printed 2500 Red Fontaines, and shipped them all out with the help of his mom and dad.  Since then, Fontaine has become an internationally recognized brand.

Zach also makes cardistry videos and tutorials on his YouTube channel and has garnered over 84,000 subscribers from around the globe - cardists, magicians and those who just enjoy watching "dope stuff."

In just the past 6 months, Fontaines have been seen over 20 million times on Facebook alone. Zach Mueller's cardistry videos featuring Fontaines have gone viral, been featured on multiple TV shows, dozens of blogs and magazines, and local channel news in the US, Israel, and Chile; and they have been shared by over 100,000 people on Facebook.

This year, Fontaines were also exclusively used in the movie SLEIGHT, an official Sundance Selection which was released nationwide in 2017.

Joining cardistry and streetwear has been a longtime dream of Zach's. So lining up with Anwar Carrots at supreme in 2011 was that dream realized.

Anwar and Zach started working on this new deck and clothing collection over 10 months ago.

Today Carrots Fontaines are a reality.
