Hochman Updates / Chapter 24 - Exposition and World's Fair Cards

SX36 - New York World's Fair, 1939-40

This was actually a Kem Card Sales Corp deck, and not Kem Playing Cards.  Here are the red and green decks in color, along with the special case for the 1939 New York World's Fair.  Deck backs show the Trylon and Perisphere.

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Russell & Morgan Co embossed tuck for Cabinet
« on: November 19, 2022, 10:12:01 AM »
This is one I've never come across before.  c1890 this is a Russell & Morgan Co. tuck box.  The only other Russell & Morgan Co. boxes I've ever seen were the telescoping boxes.  Interesting leather grain embossing.  Anyone else ever seen one of these?

I'm looking for an opened but complete (with jokers and extra cards) deck of the 1992 Bee Centennial Playing Cards in decent of better condition.

It slowly dawned on me that decks of cards from the 1970s and 1980s are starting to get up there in age.  But they are readily available, even unopened.  But how to date the unopened decks?  I collected a bunch of Bicycle decks from the 70s to present, and noted how you can narrow down the date of a sealed deck of cards from the changes in the tuck.

*** All dates + / 1 a year given that tucks and decks may have been made in different years ***

If you have a bar code on the bottom right that starts with a floating 0, your deck was made between 1980 - 1994.

If your have a bar code on the bottom right with a non-floating 0, your deck was made between 1995 - 2000.

Additionally, Bicycle added the Registered Trademark symbol to the front of the tuck around 1991, and added small slits in the tongue of the tuck around 1994.

Bar code was moved to the bottom left around 2000.

If anyone else has some tips for dating sealed modern Bicycle decks, like when the white cellophane pull strip was in use, add them below.  And if I got something wrong, please let me know.

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / USPCC Green back decks
« on: March 28, 2022, 12:33:07 PM »
So I always understood USPCC to have stopped making Green backed decks around 1926, but now I found a green backed Steamboat deck from 1954 ("T" date code, two-digit zip on extra card).  So, am I correct to assume that the discontinuing green backs around 1926 just for Bicycle decks?

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / La Paloma card back from KEM Playing Card Co.
« on: November 30, 2020, 04:32:26 PM »
Took a number of years, I was finally able to find one of the most elusive KEM decks - La Paloma. According to the September 13, 1937 ad in the Buffalo Courier Express, this deck was designed for and exclusive to the Flint & Kent upscale department store in Buffalo (I think this is also the source of the popular Kent back design). Came in red and blue, and I already had the Neillite box for this deck. Enjoy.

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Help identifying a deck - SPCC or not?
« on: June 30, 2020, 10:48:30 AM »
This one just came in.  Napoleon Playing Cards from J.N. Playing Card Company.  Box says Manufactured by The Standard Playing Card Co.  Standard Bridge Playing Cards No. 333.  BUT, there was a slip of paper with Japanese? writing wrapped around the exposed edge of the deck in the slip box.  So, is this one of the Japanese decks that claimed to be Standard, or is it actually a Standard deck?  All help appreciated.

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Courts change on old Bee decks?
« on: April 23, 2020, 12:12:21 PM »
I was looking through some old Bee decks, and noticed a pretty drastic change in the court cards at some point.  New wardrobe and maybe had some work done.  Anyone have an idea of when that happened?  I know it was pre-1942, but haven't been able to narrow it down any more than that.

Hochman Updates / Chapter 17 - Advertising Playing Cards
« on: April 08, 2020, 03:01:40 PM »
I'm sure there are a ton of advertising decks out there, but let's keep this to decks that have something more than just an advertising card back.  Post should have special courts, Ace of Spades, or Jokers.
