Playing Card Plethora / TheBadJoker Internet Store
« on: July 20, 2020, 07:49:33 PM »
Hi Everyone;

Just a heads up that I have initiated an on line internet store through BIG CARTEL. I will have a total of 50 items in the store and I invite you all to take a peek. I am posting this because each one of you I know has a collecting interest in one or more of the items I have listed. Categories include gambling, playing cards, playing card related items, advertising and the unusual. There are only about 14  or so items currently listed but I will be adding more every day until the total of 50 is reached.

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / POTTER & POTTER AUCTION
« on: March 25, 2017, 06:22:33 PM »
Well, it's that time of year again! Potter & Potter spring Playing Card & Gambling Auction featuring the playing card collection of Bob & Rhonda Hawes.

Continental Playing Card Co. “Funny Spot.” New York, ca. 1905. 52 + J + EC. Very good-. Some cards creased and many with scrapes, the 2H being by far the worst. The pips have humorous faces and there is a humorous saying or motto on every card. The extra card has a blue back while the other 53 cards have a red back. Very rare. Remember bidding starts at 1/2 the low price which in this case is $1,750. Hoch.T13.

$3,500/4,500

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / POTTER & POTTER MAY 21ST. AUCTION
« on: March 08, 2016, 03:46:30 PM »
Well, it's almost that time of year again. I thought I would post one of the many rare decks that will be auctioned. The Monitor & Merrimac deck is one of the top five rarest American decks in my opinion although an argument might be made for others. In 40 years, I have not seen this deck change hands at any price. Hope you enjoy the photo and by the way it is in near mint condition and there is a leather box with it that might very well be original. Enjoy!

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / RARE PORTFOLIO
« on: August 06, 2015, 10:57:22 AM »
I thought this wonderful portfolio of playing card images lampooning the Axis powers might be of interest. This portfolio is rarely seen in it's entirety. Have included a description of it below as well as a few photos. Anyone know how many may have been printed?

ANTONIO ARIAS BERNAL (1914-1960, Mexico) PLAYING CARD MASTERS, LITHOGRAPHS ON PAPER - Plate signed complete set of 56 unbound cartoons in a large folio, "Album Historico la II Guerra Mundial Illustrada por Arias Bernal" - Caricatures of World War II major figures, the portfolio includes a full description of each cartoon - A noted caricaturist, works by Bernal can be found in numerous collections - Provenance: the set was given to Trygve Lie by J. Resendiz Picasso when he was First Secretary General of the United Nations; Mr. Lie subsequently gave it to the consignor's great uncle, who was his private secretary. Includes all cartoons and the portfolio. 15.25" x 11.5

I have been negligent! I promised to post some photos of playing cards coming up in our June auction and I have not done ANY. I know you all have been waiting with bated breath, so here is the first one. It is a Nathaniel Ford deck ca.1840. U1 in Hochman. I am not even going to mention how rare it is. Oh by the way, the auction is the last weekend in June in Chicago with a nice get together planned for Friday night. Would really like to see some of you.

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / POTTER & POTTER AUCTION 2015
« on: December 28, 2014, 09:09:34 AM »
Yes, yes I know it is 6 months away but believe me it will be here in the blink of an eye. I have already begun the cataloging process and we have some phenomenal items in both the playing card & gambling category.  Just to get your juices flowing, we have a "Bad Joker" deck and a Hodges Geographical in the playing card category and a set of ivories, a gaffed dealing box and a most unusual card trimmer in the gambling category. The auction will be a two day affair on either the weekend of June 20th or June 27th.  We are not currently looking for any more consignments for this auction but if you have a truly fantastic item we may be able to squeeze it in. There will be a party the Friday before the auction begins so I suggest that you begin making plans to be here.  Have a VERY HEALTHY, HAPPY and PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR everyone and I look forward to seeing many of you in 2015.

Aces and Eights - the Vintage/Antique STISO Board / For Sale
« on: December 03, 2014, 02:49:46 PM »
Offering these two Little Duke decks in original tin box befroe I put them on Ebay. Will leave them here for 1 week or until sold.

Two decks are complete and in excellent condition. One dates from the 40's and the other dates from around 1900 as does the tin box.  These tin boxes are very difficult to find in decent condition as the lithography is very thin and easily damaged. The price is $55 shipping included.

Question of the day.  Why do deck listings on Ebay and elsewhere state that a deck is "complete" when it is missing a joker?  Not!
