A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Is there a way to clean yellowing cards?
« on: March 18, 2017, 08:16:03 PM »
I recently acquired several sealed decks of early to mid 1940's vintage playing cards,  when I got them home I noticed an odor. I placed the decks in a ziplock bag for a few hours,  I then opened the bag and gave a sniff.  The odor was unmistakably that of cigarettes and pipe tobacco. I then decided to carefully open the decks and inspect the cards. I very cleanly cut the tax stamps an I found the outside cards on every pack to be yellowed, presumably from sitting in a smokers home for decades.

It may not be worth messing with, but does anyone know of a way to clean the yellow off of the cards that were on the ends of the stack of cards (against the inside cardboard package)?   I'm not real worried because I did not spend much money on these, but the decks are in like new condition except for the yellow ace of spades and the yellowed back of one of the jokers.

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Re: Bought These at Walgreens Today

I bought 4 decks of STUD cards at a local Walgreens last week, I was kind of shocked. all blue, 2 standard and 2 jumbo index. I kept 1 of each sealed, and started using the others,  they are old stock from 2011.  Kind of hard to believe they sat on a shelf somewhere for 5 years or more.

Cool, I think I'm going to join 52+J, that's another reason to,  I never made it inside USPCC, but other companies, which were later acquired by USPCC, for example, my Gemaco cards are from before they were bought. Not sure if they still operate out of the same plant in MO or not. I suspect the Gemaco casino cards are made in a secure facility like some of the Credit Card manufacturers I used to service.

Hi,  I'm new here and may ask a few questions soon.  I have a modest collection of playing cards, both modern and vintage.  I started casually collecting playing cards some years ago due to being employed in the printing industry as a field service rep for more than 20 years, I got into a couple playing card plants in my day, I always found different and unique back designs is what made me want the deck.

My oldest decks are probably some 1940s vintage Aviator decks (still sealed, dated from the tax stamp). I also have some pre-1987 Arrco decks, which I don't really know how to date exactly.  Gemaco decks, Liberty decks.   Most of my newer decks are all USPCC brands.

I have a few decks that I have not been able to date, I may ask about them if I finish searching this forum site and still have questions.

Thanks much.
