All,

Bosch deck will be launched in approx. 2 weeks from today. Check this page to get notified of the launch.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sunishchabba/bosch-playing-cards-0

As I said in the custom design thread on UC, kickstarter campaign will be quite simple: one collector's edition deck with uncut sheet. No back or tuck change (similar to what will be there for Mythos). ...I've started feeling that what has been going at present in custom playing card world isn't right, and as change starts with each one of us, someone needs to start doing what feels right in this regard. This took more than a year, and I do hope it will still attract art & playing card collectors along with puzzle enthusiasts in the mix.

This deck requires very precise registration & so I am considering Legends Taiwan facility & have also reached out to Lotrek as his registration is top-notch. The tuck will have matte finish and embossing only (no foil), so it won't utilize Lotrek's fine foil related craftsmanship though, and I am yet to hear back from him.

Please feel free to share this link with other collectors that you know of, and who are not on PCF.

Playing Card Plethora / Kalevala Playing Cards - Coming soon
« on: June 17, 2018, 02:33:06 AM »
Kalevala Playing Cards based on the Finnish national epic - Coming Soon.

Completely hand-drawn and a somewhat different direction as compared to the previous works by GPCC.

Thanks to Räpylätassu for his expert advice and inputs. I don't think it would have been made possible without his prompt inputs. Lots of research and study went into this with most work taken out of the hindi translation of the epic poem by Vishnu Khare an Indian Hindi poet & translator.

You will find numerous translations of the epic in English and other languages but Khare was awarded Order of the White Rose of Finland for his Hindi translation of the national epic of Finland, Kalevala so this is one of the best ever translations done on the epic. Still, Räpylätassu's inputs were far more valuable because of his knowledge of the epic.

Printers being evaluated but most likely it is going to be USPCC this time.

Back design:

How likely can USPCC do a full bleed back with good registration? I've asked them and awaiting their reply.

Bharata Tarot Playing Cards is live on Kickstarter. This deck was a stretch goal for a previous project, and unfortunately, it could not get unlocked. I've launched it again as a short campaign with a relatively lower goal.

Hi All,

I'd come across this a couple of months back, and a discussion on gilding yesterday made me remember it. The Art Gilding Academy in Sydney, Australia offers 3 different workshops spanning 2 hour, 2-days & 9-day immersive experience to learn the ancient craft of gilding. 2-hour workshop is priced at AUD $39 per person and gives a pretty good introductory session on gilding & participants create a leafed Abalone Shell with natural Mother of Pearl during the workshop itself.

Hi All,

This is just to let you all know that Divine Art Playing Cards - White Gold edition launches on Thursday, April 20, 2017 @ 11 PM AEST (UTC + 10).

It comes with a completely redesigned tuckbox and card back while keeping the faces same as the Original deck. On shipping front, I will be working with the same fulfillment partner and decks will come wrapped in bubble wrap and shipped in a box.

On stock & handling, it will be again 330 GSM German Black Core Card stock which is top of the line cardboard available, and the cards will have linen air cushion finish on one side. We've tried to improve the handling even though the deck comes with gilded edges and gold foil but please note that it is not comparable to Metaluxe. I believe USPCC is the clear leader here, because they are able to do the foiling even on a very thin card stock (e.g. Gold Rarebit) without getting the impression on the front faces. Still, you'll see improvement in terms of handling when compared to the first deck and/or any other decks out there with foiled backs.

There are going to be pretty nice EB tiers available, and as I'm working directly with the printer (and have got no major overheads unlike others), you're going to see a better deal on Kickstarter than most other projects.

Please feel free to reach out to me for any question. Hope to see you all there.

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Raja Ravi Varma Playing Cards
« on: April 08, 2017, 11:07:05 AM »
Hi All,

Does anyone know anything about Raja Ravi Varma Playing Cards or Fritz Schleicher and has got a deck or two in his/her collection? These cards were printed between 1910 & 1915 by a German technician named Fritz Schleicher who'd bought the printing press from Raja Ravi Varma in 1901. There is not much information about these decks apart from the articles written by Late Kishor Gordhandas. He had got color pictures of these cards from a French Historian & Playing Cards Collector in and around 1992-93.  I'm looking to get these decks restored and will appreciate if someone can give more information about it. I've tried checking it with a few private collectors in India but no one owns any of the deck by Raja Ravi Varma.

Hi All,

I'm pleased to share a few draft designs of a fully custom deck. It had a few bumps and it might have gone to Kickstarter even before Ganjifa, but it didn't happen.

This is inspired from Kalamkari & Sanjhi, two of the traditional Indian folk art & crafts. The illustrations are hand-drawn and we interacted with a few Kalmakari & Sanjhi artisans to get their feedback during the design process.

The early designs were shown on another forum and received some feedback.

Here is a peek at the old designs:

And, please find below the first court card with updated design and coloring. The subject is Lakshmi - a Hindu Goddess of wealth, fortune, and prosperity and is worshiped by millions the world over.

If you've got any feedback and/or suggestions, please feel free to comment.  Appreciate your help.

The Conversation Parlor / Guru Ganjifa - Live on Kickstarter!!!
« on: May 23, 2016, 10:39:57 AM »

Hi All,

Guru Ganjifa is live on KS but with no hope of seeing it getting funded  :( :(. Looks like I faltered on promotion & marketing, but there have been some concerns on high funding goal for first time project creator. Well, I understand that the funding goal is high and there are reasons behind it. First of all, there are round cards which is not a common shape, so everywhere the price is quite high than regular poker card stock. Secondly, the number of cards per deck is pretty high (130 in total). In addition to that, there is a 2- part custom rigid box and a booklet spanning 20 pages. I've even offered worldwide shipping but still, it hasn't resulted into an increase in number of backers. This project has taken a lot of efforts and I did try to make sure that through it, I can pay an ode to the legacy of Ganjifa cards, but it looks like it won't happen in near future. Even the booklet that has got history of Ganjifa and Playing Cards in General plus rules for different games, is being reviewed by the leading historians and collectors who have done work on this field like Her Highness Rajmata Stwashiladevi Bhonsle (erstwhile Queen of Sawantwadi, Maharashtra in India), Jeff Hopewell, Vasudha Joshi etc., still the deck struggles to find its takers.

I understand that I'm still learning and have got a lot to learn, but will appreciate if you can suggest or advice on anything that could help this project.  Or, should I take this forward in a different manner or platform? Is Kickstarter not a platform for such niche projects with somewhat high funding goal? What could have I done differently before launch?

Hi All,

I'd like to share with all of you a Ganjifa deck I'd been working for quite a while. The deck has been titled "Guru Ganjifa" with inspiration from Dashavatar Ganjifa and Madhubani art, and has 130 cards per deck (120 game cards + 10 description cards).  I received Prototype decks yesterday (printed in USA) and have started playtesting here in Sydney. It will be launched via Kickstarter.

There are still some talks going on with respect to shipping & fulfillment, and I'm struggling with how to make the shipping costs more pleasing to non-US backers. Also, though the artwork has got me some good reviews but I'm not planning to add any additional items to the deck as I see it makes things a bit complicated wrt. shipping and fulfillment and this being the first campaign, I just want to focus on building community and delighting backers. Still, I would like to know your thoughts on this aspect.

Lastly, the card stock will be 310 gsm black core with linen finish and box will be a two-part and gold foiled. I tried tuck box for prototype but it is not able to withstand the weight of the cards.

Sunish Chabba

« on: April 12, 2016, 10:25:44 AM »
Hi All,

Greetings from Sydney!!!

I'm Sunish Chabba, a soon to be (self) published game designer. I'd been working on a game concept based out of Ganjifa with artwork inspired from a traditional art form called Madhubani. I'm elated to share that I've received the prototype decks and have started playtesting.

Looking forward to share more details with forum and to learn from all you folks.

Regards,
Sunish
