Another engaging review!

As a teacher of literature, I couldn't resist grabbing a few of the Shakespeare decks.  I was originally planning on raffling them off to my students as prizes for good work, etc. But now that I've seen how awesome they are, I'm not sure I want to part with them!!

Keep up the good work!  :)

Hello Gejus!

Welcome to our forum!

I believe we have already met on the Facebook Playing Card Collectors Club! ... It's a fantastic group, BTW. :D

Great to see you here too! ... Do you ever sleep?  :-\

Thanks for the input, Don!

I see what you mean about the failed 'two-way' design - the 'starburst' bottom center has longer 'legs' than the one at the top. Plus, the ones on the center of the sides aren't quite the same either ...
You have a keen eye!  8)

... Anyone else have any ideas?  :-\

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Need help to identify 'mystery card'
« on: May 08, 2017, 07:51:54 PM »
Hi everyone!

I recently bought a Bicycle single on Ebay, but the vendor sent me the wrong card!! Happily, they sent me the correct card later. Even better - they let me keep the original 'error card' free of charge!

Trouble is, I know nothing about the 'mystery card' ... can anybody give me some information about it?

Thanks!

Hi Ender!

... I am totally enjoying your reviews!

You call them 'Pictorial Reviews', but it's your written descriptions that really float my boat - your enthusiasm comes through loud and clear!

Welcome! (... a bit late, I know!)

Hi Ender!

I pledged, mainly because I missed out on V1.

... was really hoping to unlock the Metaluxe version - oh well ...

I definitely like the yellow better! ... I'm curious to feel how they handle - that will tell me if the pledge was worthwhile after all!

Hey Shimmering! ... missed your guitar comments first time around ....

My acoustic go-to is an Ovation - my second one! ... I know what you mean about proper care and storage - my first Ovation was warped by many years of travelling through Europe and subjecting it to wild swings in temperature and humidity (not to mention clumsy baggage handling!) I still keep it for sentimental value ...

That's cool that you use open tunings! I'm too much of a coward to experiment with alternate tunings ...I feel daring when I use a capo! lol!

Thanks for responding!

Thanks for the suggestions, guys!
... I`m not familiar with any of them by name, but I`m gonna grab my guitar and YouTube 'em!  8)

I did see Jerry and the Dead twice live though: once in Toronto, and once in Buffalo (Rich Stadium - Steve Miller was the opener!!!)

... And now, for something completely different ...

A friend of mine made these very lo-def video clips of our 'Teacher Band' playing at an outdoor staff retirement party last June up here in Canada. Here's the origin:

The original source footage comes from my GoPro camera, which I had positioned about 30 or 40 yards away ... Using some post-production trickery, I zoomed in, re-centered and tried to brighten the night shots (best I could do - lighting was poor) I didn't shoot in HD in order to fit the whole show on the disk - that's why the zoomed image is so grainy. The audio comes directly from the built-in camera microphone ... not bad, actually.

Our 'band' is made up entirely of teachers at my high-school - and we are NOT music teachers (in case you couldn't tell ...) We make no apologies for any blunders!

I'm on the far right of the picture playing lead guitar in the dorky shorts ... I'm barely visible in the Tom Petty song, but I pull off some tasty licks! 8)

For guitar nerds, I'm playing a Fender Stratacoustic - Fender's acoustic/electric version of the Stratocaster.

The songs are: (1) Taking Care of Business - BTO, and (2) Mary Jane's Last Dance - Tom Petty

BTW ... it would be cool to put together a setlist of card-related tunes! Some obvious ones are:
  • Ace of Spades - Motorhead
  • The Joker - Steve Miller
  • The Jack - AC/DC
... Any other suggestions ...? Any other 'musicians' out there on PCF?

Rock on!

Guess I'm late to the party ... Congratulations! - Matching china is in the mail!  ;)

As a Canadian, I found the interview very interesting!

I now also realize I've been mispronouncing 'Boyer' in my head all this time!   :-\

Playing Card Plethora / Re: My Ideal Aviator Box Design
« on: March 01, 2017, 05:19:53 PM »
On a side note, I visited the Bicycle site recently and was surprised to see that the Aviator Heritage Edition has already been discontinued!

... This surprised me since I thought this would be more of a mass-market deck (maybe like Archangels).  There was no indication that this was a limited run ...

Does anyone know how many of these decks were printed? ... Glad I grabbed some while I could! - a great deck for the price!

Playing Card Plethora / Removing the Cellophane vs. Breaking the Seal
« on: March 01, 2017, 05:07:12 PM »
Hi collectors!

I have a question for people who specialize in modern decks ... (I'm mainly an antique guy - in more ways than one!  ;))

Here's my issue: I have a display of modern decks in my living room. The problem is, the light tends to reflect and glare off the cellophane, and they don't look as good as I'd like. Some decks in particular have fairly 'loose' cellophane, which makes the reflection even more distracting. ..

I'd like to remove the cellophane from my decks to make my display more visually appealing, but I don't plan on breaking the seals.

Does removing the cellophane count as 'opening' the deck? ... In other words, is removing the cellophane OK if the seal remains intact? ... or will I basically be making the decks worthless? Is a sealed deck with no cellophane still considered 'sealed'? Does it depend on the deck? Would you consider buying a sealed deck without cellophane?

I'd love some opinions on this!

Thanks in advance!

Wow! ... nice items!  8)

I like how your first purchases are so focused ... I remember buying a bunch of random things that made no sense together!  :-\

Looking forward to seeing some better images - those are some cool back designs! (... digital scanner maybe? - Just saying!!  ;))

Enjoy your cards!

Hi Skinny!

... Always great to meet new, enthusiastic collectors!

I'm more of an antique collector, but I was smart enough to buy a half-brick of the Club 808 Griffin Deck when they were available...

This is still my favorite modern deck, even though they are a few years old - they handle beautifully (reminds me of 1990s-era Bicycles). Plus, the embossing and foiling on the tuck can't be beat! ... It doesn't hurt that green is my favorite color!!

If you are interested, I'm prepared to part with one (sealed !) - I'll give it to you cheap! - PM me!

For me, parting with a deck is like putting a puppy up for sale: I'm more interested in knowing that it will be loved in it's new home than I am interested in the price-point ...!

Enjoy your addiction! - I enjoy mine!

EDIT: I apologize for calling you a `new`collector - you joined the forum a year before I did!  ;)

As usual, tons of cool ideas on this thread!

As my collection has expanded, I too have been wondering how best to catalogue my collection!

To this end, I made an investment: a digital document scanner! ... As it turns out, this was a great idea: now, I make digital scans of my cards and add any extra info to the title or description.

I found this to be a great solution to the categorizing issue - a picture can replace a lot of descriptors!

Also, once I have digital versions of my cards, I can 'cast' them to my 60-inch TV via Bluetooth as a slideshow - a great way to walk newbies through my collection without having to break out every single card or deck: if people are super-interested, I'll bring out the actual cards for closer examination.

BTW, the scanner I bought was an Epson - less than $100 on Amazon. Here's the link to the Canadian listing (probably cheaper in the US!)

 https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00SSXQ7Q2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Happy collecting!

Wow! That Canteen deck is a great find - and looks like amazing condition too!

I recently lost out on an auction for the AS, which I'm sure was the same specimen shown in the WWPCM, so I don't think there are many floating around.  The way I read Hochmann, the editors had only ever seen one Canteen deck, and it was without a joker.

... I wonder if yours is the deck they were talking about??

Cool stuff!

... I'm not jealous, though!  :-[

Congratulations and thanks to the 52+J crew for issue 25!

... Haven't had time to read it yet ...

I suppose the next issue will be the 'half-deck' anniversary!?

just wanna check if 52 jokers membership is required for download?

You should totally join! ... It's awesome! ... You get access to all the back-issues too - plus Clear the Decks, the quarterly print magazine. Lots of other archival material as well!

Thanks Fess!

You reminded me that I should mention that the shelving units are perched on top of two "Cubby Benches" - also from Prepac!
