I am so touched by all your beautiful messages and tributes to and about my Tom.  Over 40 years ago we embraced the world of playing card collecting and it has given us so much fun, travel, knowledge and many, many wonderful friends.  I just can't imagine what our life would have been had we never discovered this great collectible and we were always our happiest when we were involved in it in any way.

Thank you all for your continual thoughts and prayers for our family, Tom left us just the way he would have wanted to, quietly and peacefully, and we know he will be in our hearts forever.

Judy

What a fantastic edition celebrating a year of this clever newsletter which covers all aspects of collecting both new and old playing cards. It is issued monthly to members of 52 Plus Joker.

If you haven't yet joined us yet, you should.  Card Culture is just one of the great perks!

Congratulations, obviously a winner!

We loved meeting you too, Kevin and seeing your presentation along with the other 5. This will be a yearly event at the convention and we are hoping to feature even more decks next year.

ALSO

There will be a new club deck introduced each year - at the moment the plan is to do this for 8 more years making a 10 year series by established modern designers.

Stay tuned!

If we were asked to we couldn't pay enough for this great segment on Fox TV.  David Martin didn't miss a trick when discussing old cards, new cards, collecting etc. Free publicity for all playing card designers and collectors.

Thanks Dave and Fox, it was such a blast!

Such a lovely tribute to Rob's mother and for anyone whose life has been touched by cancer. I never knew there were different colored ribbons for each cancer.

Beautiful deck, Rob and Randy

After 40 years of collecting only antique and vintage cards who would have ever believed that we would start collecting these new and wonderful decks with their fantastic packaging.  Paul's fantastic deck is the second in a yearly series designed exclusively for 52 PlusJoker and produced by Bill Kalush and his Expert Playing Card Company and it is brilliant!  Believe me you want this one.

I also love Rob and Randy's collaboration on the beautiful Never Forgotten deck designed in memory of Rob's mother.  Half of all the proceeds will go to cancer charities.  What a lovely tribute!

So I'm hooked!!

Just a little correction- At least half of the proceeds from the items I have in this years club auction are going to a charity. Sorry if there was any confusion.
So many great decks but these are my favorites.  I am definitely hooked!!

What can I say about Card Culture?

I CAN say, as the forever-editor of Clear the Decks (CTD) 52 Plus Joker's quarterly magazine, that I am blown away by this new and exciting newsletter.  It was conceived and put together by Lee Asher and Don Boyer, with a little assistance from Tom Dawson and what a masterful job they have done! The articles are varied and interesting, covering a combination of new and old card collectibles. They have attracted a group of card collectors and designers who are sharing their passion for playing cards through the pages of Card Culture. We have a number of members who are collecting the wonderful new decks, many of which are being introduced through various websites including this one.  Many are clever and original and obviously, as we have known for years, each card is really an individual work of art.
.
Don't miss Tom's article on what is possibly the oldest COMPLETE deck in existence.  What a deck to dream about!

Kudos
Judy

CC 27 You are absolutely the BEST researcher.  We have always loved these fabulous turn-of-the-century- window displays and you have found so many.  Cryptocard27 is promising to show us much more of his wonderful pieces so keep tuned!

I did send this letter to the editor but I think it should be here as well for those who might really be interested in discovering more about playing cards, designs and history through the club, 52plusjoker.org. I also like the idea of making the odd issue of Card Culture available everyone. Keep up the good work!

Card Culture - a note to the editor

Dear Don
Due to the craziness in the Dawson household at Christmas I have put off reading Card Culture until I had time to browse through it properly. I am very impressed - it looks great, reads easily and imparts knowledge.   What more could readers ask for?

Thanks to all who are investing their valuable time to this project, the first issue is a sure winner.  Keep up the good work!
Judy Dawson

PS. If you have read and enjoyed CC,
dash off a note to the editor, compliments are always well received!

If you love cards you will love these pictures, hard to believe the huge variety that we saw!

Hey SH
Great to hear from you, isn't it crazy that we old timers are buying choice new decks?  So much talent out there! On a personal note when will we see you again?

I am sure you will be OK as right now the limit is only two per member.  This deck has some fabulous and beautiful unique features but our cupboard is getting fuller with great decks created by other talented designers.

We NEVER buy new decks but now.......!

You're right - and it's a goodie!

Tom and I have been lucky to have been at every one of the 24 52+joker conventions and they have all been terrific, seriously. However this might have been the very best one ever!  Why?  Four wonderful and amazing presentations; lots of enthusiastic buying, trading and selling, two successful auctions, one live, one silent, a great banquet and a fascinating card design expose by Jackson (Robinson) on our beautiful new club deck for members only.

But the thing that really made this convention such a hit was the meshing of two worlds brought together by a common passion for the playing card. Everyone young and old had things to show and share. The antique card collectors were fascinated by the amazing new design decks and the new collectors were awed by what they saw in the old stuff and everyone left far richer (and poorer!) for this experience.

I hope we will be able to meet more collectors next year as there will be so much for us all to enjoy. We are bursting with ideas!

Please join 52 plus joker and join in the fun - We will all benefit!

Great research on my favorite company!  Copied into my files. Could I use it as an article for Clear the Decks, the 52+Joker newsletter. And if so would you also send me a short bio about you and playing cards?

Thanks cc27

Cryptocard27

I love your piece of ephemera which we actually do have and which we definitely paid more than 6 dollars for.  Ads such as this are one of our very  favourite areas of collecting and Marshall Fields did some of the very best coloured inserts in their hardbound catalogues.

Good for you, a great treasure!

A fantastic opportunity, in all our years of collecting playing cards to be able to see such a thing - Can't wait
