There's a deck of playing cards in here.
DEALN
by Elliot Felix

Quote
DEALN is a portable card case that doubles as a dealing shoe. Whether you’re a casual card player or serious shark, DEALN adds rhythm and ease to your game with smooth, professional, quick-action dealing.
Through ingenious design, this geometric folding case quickly transforms from an ordinary card case to a professional dealing shoe.
Proudly designed and tested in the heart of Brooklyn, DEALN transforms any table from casual to casino. - KS campaign page.

What we want is the deck though.

I've been known to deal blackjack a few (hundred) times. For me personally, I need standard or near standard faces for recognition. I'd stumble trying to add these cards at a glance and players might, too. I don't think pulling cards from their short edges would be an issue, though. I like the deck and the shoe, but I'd never use them together.

I'm not a big fan of the indices. They're a little too small in my opinion. Adding the divider between the rank and suit indicator  is interesting but it points out a sloppy element there as well. I think the suit indicators were placed based upon the bottom the pip rather than the top which will leave more distance between the divider and the pip based upon suit and pip design. Going off the top of the pip would clean that aspect up and add a little more polish to the deck.

The full bleed line on the courts is an interesting design element but it's a negative for a gaming deck, since DEALN is about the card case/single deck shoe meant for gaming it may be a good idea to revisit that aspect of the courts design. I think that the line can be implemented in the design without being a negative to the decks use for gaming as well ass keeping the integrity of the design itself. That's really neither here nor there at this point since the designer likes it and has decided to go with it. The indices are fixable before the deck goes to print and if this campaign is successful I hope they do fix them.

The single deck shoe/card case is a great idea. I think there are several flaws in the design starting with the size. It doesn't look like it will house a sealed deck of playing cards. It's just too small for that. I'm not going to play anything other than a very friendly game of whatever with people I know and trust where we only bet with marshmallows, etc, when the deck isn't sealed and presented to the table before opening. Anyone who does, well haha, I'm happy to host a poker night come on over and please bring a nice fat bankroll with you.

I'd love to see a little more security in keeping it closed beyond just the magnet. Adding something as simple as ball and hole to help keep that sucker locked shut while it bounces around in my pocket or wherever. Magnets reverse polarity for the strangest reasons and it can happen at any moment. I like the shoe/card case as a curiosity, more than a functional piece of equipment. I don't think it's quite finished and should be engineered to house a sealed tuck. Then it would be a brilliant piece of kit. I like where they're going with this though so I am happy to support the curiosity and the interesting deck with a fun card back.

  • Pick a card, any card...no, not THAT card!

Deck design - it's flawed.  A good effort, but a little too modern and has court card faces printed into the bleed - a big no-no that allows court cards to be spotted from the top or bottom edge of the deck, with a sharp eye.

Shoe design - the design is indeed clever, but it's more of a purpose issue than a design issue.  The only games I usually see played with a shoe are games like blackjack and baccarat/chemin de fer, neither of which are common household games and are typically played with multi-deck shoes to prevent card counters from gaining an edge on the house.  The folded-closed position is protective of the cards, but it's awfully long and the shape is less than convenient for anything other than someone's back pants pocket or a coat pocket.  Poker games don't use a shoe because the deck is shuffled after every hand - a shoe would only get in the way, and for a skilled dealer, can actually make stunts like second deals easier to get away with, especially with a small-printed, borderless, repeating pattern like the Bee Diamond Back.

I can pass on this one, though it is a good try and has real potential with some redesigning.
