Title: (ISO) Blue Five-Hundred cards, used
Post by: Chuqii on October 15, 2015, 05:03:02 PM
I bought a red and blue deck of five-hundred cards for cheap on ebay to use for poker, but the blue deck had a bad card.  I'm looking for a used blue five-hundred deck to replace that one.  No box needed.  Preferably with this back design.  Let me know if you have a spare that is not too beat up.

Thanks.

Clay

You should have been at the convention!  I know I saw at least one of them at the silent auction!

I've been known to do that with modern cards - use another deck for replacement cards.  You might find it worth checking eBay - you might luck into a single-card seller that has the right face and back for sale; that way, the replacement would cost a LOT less, just a buck or two.

I'm curious about how you use 500s to play poker. Don't all the odds change for each poker hand? If you did the math, can you share?

They're not really used much for poker.  As I'm sure you know, "500" decks typically have values of 11 and 12 in all four suits, and some have values of 13 in one suit of each color, typically spades and hearts.  (This is all in addition to the usual set of courts, not as replacements.)  They're used primarily for playing games of rummy, gin rummy or rummy 500 with up to six players instead of the usual limit of four - it is thought of as a better alternative to using a double deck, which in rummy makes many card combinations too easy to obtain.

As far as playing poker, I'm guessing with a little "napkin math" that most combinations would be about as difficult to obtain with the exception of flushes, which would become easier, I think.  Persi Diaconis (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persi_Diaconis) would be the better man to ask!

I found nice calculator online that will allow you to adjust for number of suits and number of cards.  When I did it for 4 decks with 15 cards in each suit (Ace-12 + JQK) the odds changed by the order of hands remained the same.  The only notable difference in rank was that that the odds for a straight became almost the same as for a flush.

Here's a link to the calculator:

And yes, I defintely want to pick a deck up for cheap.  I bought these two decks on line for about 8 bucks total, including shipping.  These decks aren't worth much anyway, and I'd love to see the faces of my poker buddies when they see 11s and 12s in their hands.

So if anyone have an extra deck out there, let me know.

Just a thought. The 11 & 12 spots could easily have been removed for playing poker.

Sure, they could - but it would eventually result in uneven wear of the cards.  When playing rummy for five or six players, the more lightly worn cards would be identifiable as the elevens and twelves.  No point in buying the larger deck, in such a case - better to use a poker deck for poker instead of these cards.

Ebay to the rescue.  Found a blue deck in my price range.  Also found one of the swastika backed 500 decks and picked that up for a decent price.
